I used to see this band over at Tier 3 and CBGBs back in the days. Usually they'd come on the stage around 3 a.m. for the die-hards to dig. This is a form of punk jazz, a mostly undeveloped genre. The bands who were doing this kind of music wanted to do something really different, but, had to abandon their projects because the material was so unrelentingly non-commercial. They were virtually starving to death, and wanted to make records that would help pay the rent and buy groceries.

What's awesome is that this is like DNA's "pop hit"! That gorgeous, ominous/hopeful, and very clear bass line makes this the most conventionally accessible thing they ever did. Which is not very accessible at all.
most of people hate this because arto didn't (or doesn't?) use guitar like it "should" be used. i find dnas guitars more like rhytmic instruments, as bass makes the melodies
One of the best bands of the No Wave movement, but just the start of Arto and Ikue Mori's long music careers (and Tim Wright came from Pere Ubu, another fantastic band from that time period.)
another criminally under-rated guitarist. Arto blows anyone else away,with an incredibly origianl and idiosyncratic playing style,that MANY people have ripped off

What song of Sonic Youth's sounds like this?

@ReturnToAus
Well uh, they did a cover of Blonde Redhead itself. But anything off the first two-three records sits pretty comfortably in the No-Wave territory.

this song is horrible and funky at the same time... The guy with the glasses looks like that Bernhard Goetz subway shooter. its his twin >,<

@lifepod2036 his name is Arto Lindsay and the chunks in his vomit have more artistic appeal thank your obvious, lame-ass comments.

The music sounds like a three-way struggle between the ego, id, and superego. Disconcerting in the BEST possible way. love it

i personally feel that this was the guerilla avant garde music
in the late 70's and 80's, made just because the shit on the radio
at that time didnt cut it, and you know what. as its called NO WAVE, it has balls
and some mighty big ones.
