For anyone who doesn't believe this happens, come visit the Smokies during the early summer. Thousands have witnessed this event and it is indeed not faked. In person is unbelievable!

@fabrizioorbezo emergence has nothing to do with either of those concepts. In fact it's almost the opposite. For example, you as a person are the emergent result of the interactions that your atoms and cells undergo. A bunch of small components interacting with simple rules can result in a complex system, without having a top-down or designed plan for how the complex system works.

This is scientifically impossible. These insects have brains far too small for such cooperation.  It must be instinct.

Look up emergence or emergent behaviour. You'll get your explanation. Simple rules or simple behaviour on a small scale can lead to large scale behaviours.

Sync fireflies can be found in Southeast Asia, for example. Malaysia is known for having firefly tourism.
