Then as the culture evolved over the last 3 decades or so, they split up into street/trick skating, downhill, etc., which all required different equipment. Street skateboards stayed small, because small, light boards are better for flip tricks and stuff. Downhill and cruising needs longer skateboards.

It's ALL skateboarding, just different parts of it.
