This is the song I sang to my Son from the time he was born. This is the song he and I danced to at his wedding. This is the song I now sing to my GrandDaughter.
I want to apologize for posting such an angry and combative comment a couple of months ago. I do not have to assume that every straight person hates me and my spouse. It comes from growing up gay in the 1950s and from the fact that I get depressed that there are still things like gay teen suicides. But John Denver wrote a beautiful song we can all enjoy. Peace to everyone and a happy new year.
Well I am big fan of John I sing most of his song in our parties n now people know me as country singer I have 7 month daughter I want to sing this for her this Christmas. Thanks John for a beautiful song
This song is special to me because I quoted the lyrics in a the first love letter I wrote 35 years ago to the spouse I am married to today. We have been happy together all that time. I changed "tiny" hand to "loving" hand, but the rest works. Oh yes, did I mention that we are a same-sex couple? Just thought I would mention it so the loving Christians on here can have a shit-fit and dump on our love.
Would have been absolutely wonderful- that beautiful paragraph of yours, until you decided to go and get vulgar. Seriously? You talk about excrement and that's the image I take away from what you said- not any of the stuff you said before it. You should have stopped at "same sex couple?".
I'm gay too. I have a gay uncle, who just so happens to be Christian. Not all Christians are the hate-mongerers you're labelling them to be. Ever heard of Metro Community Church? Gay-friendly
@Treemeadow Damn you Gay people always spoil the fun. I have gay friends and I don't really care what they do in their personal life but I couldn't stand it when they keep fussing me to become a vegetarian. You gays always want to make lots of noise.
@Valteron8 - I heard it first last night when my sweetheart sang it to me. Great song. And congratulations! I hope I'm so lucky to be with her that long...
@sweetpeachesalways I want to apologize for posting such an angry and combative comment a couple of months ago. I do not have to assume that every straight person hates me and my spouse. @Valteron8 This is a love song sence you were in young and in love you should remember hate and bigits will always be there,.I am a Christian I do not hate same sex couples it is the life style thats wrong. I will pray for you becauce I love Christ and he loves you and so do I.
@wgs1960 I am sorry but you have me confused. You do not hate same-sex couples but it is the life-style that's wrong? What the hell does that mean? Do you approve of my same-sex spouse and I or do you not? Our relationship includes sex, like any married relationship. Do you condemn that or not? You can't have it both ways. You can't say you don't hate gays but condemn the expression of gay sexual orientation as wrong.
@Valteron8 First of it is a sin for man to have sexual relations with another man. Lev 18:22 Says man do not lie with man as you do with a woman. For this act is a detestable sin. This is God laws not mine. God doesn't change. I know love the person hate the sin. Lev chapter 18 and read it please.
@wgs1960 I have long ago learned that it is a waste of time and effort to argue with someone who bases his jugements on literal interpretations of the Bible. Since I don't believe in God or the Bible, let's just go our own ways. Have a nice life, stop wasting my time and I'll stop wasting yours. We both have more to do than this. Peace be unto you.
Ah, I sent it to my love when we first fell in love, exactly one year ago.
I liked your comment up to the part where you started talking about same-sex couples. It's not that I'm against it, but is it seriously necessary to put that in there? It was a lovely comment, and I would have thumbed it up, but your rant there ruined the mood.
I've always loved this song since I first heard it when I was a child. I now sing it to my nephews. This song is one the most beautiful love songs for children.....
This was originally written for Bobbie Wargo. He used to sing in my dorm, Tower Hall, at Stephens College. Bobbie was on my floor and they would let him in after hours to play for us.
this song is dedicated to me . when my dad left he said i should try to hear this song and when i was start playing this pieces its make me cry .its so hard if your dad is not on your side . i miss my PAPA so much i wish he will come home soon
The girl who has commented on this video is also the very same girl to who I dedicated this song to. The problem we have is that I love her but she isn't to sure whether she loves me from her heart or mind, because if it was her heart she would have been my wife today, she still lives in a world surrounded by a lot many things that dont include me.....
My dad used to know that my sis n I loved music. But he could only afford to buy 2 albums per year end. In 74 we asked him to buy best of Bee Gees and Best of John Denver. We love you Dad.
Best John Denver song ever. What great sadness it brought me when he died. I loved his music when it wasn't cool to like him and still keep his CD's in my car.
We had this album in 1915 in our apt, but it was Wendy's. John Denver wrote whaat we were clinging to as young women, and then he died. Beautiful voice, instrumentation, beautiful heart, everything. GBu, John
I absolutely love this song and it became my daughter's favourite song too. She is now ll years old and this song has been sung to her every night. She will not go to sleep otherwise. The words have such wonderful meaning and I hope she can continue singing this song throughout her lifetime and perhaps sing it to her daughter one day! Miss you John but you have a legacy behind
The first time I heard this song was sang by Peter, Paul and Mary, it has been so long that I do not really know whether it is written by John Denver or by Peter, Paul and Mary. I like the words of the song, as it is full of love. I sort of like the version of the latter, the he did it just as well but in a faster pace and beat. Too bad, talented people always died early, so many of them. It is a lost to the world!
A song which reminds me of the early 70s and my dear departed dad who went to great lengths to buy John Denver albums on import. I was about 8 years old when I first heard this song and it;s just as touchinhg today.
I've heard this song way back in the 80's when I was a young boy. I thought the melody was nice back then but I didn't fully appreciate its beauty until had children of my own. Thanks JD for this wonderful song. R.I.P.
Simply Genius...God given, Thank you for sharing John Denver with us , Lord...The gift is timeless, I think this is the most beautiful love song EVER written
For their wedding, my parents hired two musicians to sing and play this song and "The Wedding Song" by Peter, Paul, and Mary...and I intend to do the same. :)
Only John could put these words together to express the love one feels for their child. He was one of a kind & should never be forgotten. I am passing his legacy on to my grandchildren. Miss him so very much & can only wonder what songs he is singing in heaven!
best eulogy I read when he died said simply "He made the critics snicker, and the rest of us sing"..I know people who claim to hate John Denver, but I promise you they know the words to most of his songs.
This was the song I sang to my now 25 yr old baby boy thousands and thousands of times when he was a baby - I first heard it probably 15 years before I had a child and knew it was written for the one I would have someday. John Denver went way too soon - beautiful other songs too - this one holds my heart the most and J4BBL - I heard it on his album and have never heard on radio either. Peter, Paul and Mary do it too - but it is John D's song for sure.
He was an amazing talent and will be missed for the gifts of the songs he wrote, the music industry had no idea what kind of talent John was. This is an amazing song i always wanted to learn guitar so I could sing it to my first born, but now I found out my wife is 6wks preg, I cant wait to watch the wonder in my childs eyes as they hear the music and show her the beauty of the dandylions for mommy lol.
Everytime I am in Monterey and see that beautiful vast bay .. I think of him with sadness, and at the same time gratefulness that we had him for the time we did. JD lives on in a lot of hearts ...
From what I know, this song was written for John Denver's son, bobby. It was the first song from John Denver that I was attached to. What a great song and the last part, with the young choir, was just like the topping in a cake, magical! ;)
@jmldspt JD did NOT have a son named Bobby. He has one son Zak who they adopted in '74 and two daughters- Anna Kate also adopted with Annie, and Jesse Belle the youngest with Cassandra Delaney. This song is for an old girlfriend Bobbie who JD knew before marrying Annie. It's one of his first ballads he wrote. It is a lovely ballad.
Many thank your posting this-with words JD belongs to our Gen O (Born 1943) and his music & lyrics is Divine & Immortal. These songs came out in the mid 70s -as all hits and live on.. Today is "FRIENDSHIP DAY". I felt I can share some thing I liked -and passed this to my friends circle. I used to play a folk guitar in youth and this was wonderful music to learn and spend time with- These songs &lyrics have always touched me. Thanks for the posting- RGDS Capt TR CHENNAI, INDIA
I always loved this song and not just because my name is on it, before I even knew the name of this song I loved it. I used to sing it to my Niece and my Nephew when they were very little and I'd rock them to sleep with this song and others too. They are all grown now but I helped raise two and one I had since he was 8. This song is timeless as is most of JD's songs are. R.I.P. John xox
This is the very first song that JD wrote...that he recorded...he named it "For Bobbie"..the Mary Travers recorded it for her daughter and both her and JD renamed the song "For Baby, For Bobbie"
My husband sang this to me at our wedding 39 yrs. ago. I always loved this song and he sang it so beautifully. I have his recording still and treasure it. He changed the words at the end to "the leaves will bow down when you walk by, and wedding bells will chime." Yes, we had bells chiming when he kissed me at the end of the ceremony. I am still in love with my best friend and he has always "walked by my side!" Thank you, Lord, for blessing me with such a wonderful man!
@grammylovespappy ::: Am touched by your comment.. I wish i can also be lucky like this. The person who dedicated this song to me is a lovely person but still i dont know if he will ever become a part of my life or not.... God Bless You and Your husband.. :)
In evoking the feelings of the innermost sanctum of the soul, John Denver's music are the best. At the heights of his inimitable singing and composing carreer , John gave all his best to move people to tears and joy
Mary Travers (of Peter, Paul and Mary) did an excellent version of this song on one of their albums. She dedicated it to her oldest daughter, Erica. She recited a poem she had written for Erica along with it. Absolutely beautiful! John had to have been well pleased when he heard the recording and the poem add -on.
OM Gosh! This brings back so many memories! I use to play this on a guitar and sing it every summer around a campfire. I went every summer with my folks to Canada. We'd all gather around the fire telling stories, playing guitars and singing. Then I sang this as a lullaby to both of my sons. This song works like a charm! God Bless you John! Now I can sing this to my grandchildren this summer, in PA.
The song will even give more justice to the genius songwriter and singer if it were titled For John. He' s one of a kind whose creations help the spirt soar to heights and fill life to the fullest
This is one of the most special songs for me, I sang it to my wife when I first met her, and then to my baby daughter , it is one of the songs that centers me towards LOVE especially when I start drifting, it is songs like this that rejuvinates my spirit.
To bad you never hear this on the radio not to mention any of his other wonderful songs such a shame need sirus to dedicate a JD station he made enough to keep it going!
To bad we dont have songs like this now days, its a good song and has alota feeling. We suffer from the lose of the John Denvers and Jim Croces.Peter Paul and Mary sang this song too and it was good but John give so much, and the kids in the back ground make it better
My daughter is ten years-old. Since before she was born, I've sung this song to her every night. Excellent upload. Thanks for posting this. Brings happy tears to my eyes every time.
Funny indeed this song has the feel for it being written for a child or baby- BUT JD actually wrote it for a girlfriend he had (Bobbie) before he met Annie. Of course the full title is For Baby (For Bobbie)- how LUCKY to be his girlfriend or wife to have him pen something for you!!! How special!!!

They are all grown now but I helped raise two and one I had since he was 8. This song is timeless as is most of JD's songs are. R.I.P. John xox

John Denver was Al-'qaida agent who intended to crash into white house.

One of the first songs that John wrote, about the time of Leaving On A Jet Plane, it is in his audiobiograpy, it is about a high school sweetheart.

Never heard it before. What a lovely song. Did JD write it?

This is the very first song that JD wrote...that he recorded...he named it "For Bobbie"..the Mary Travers recorded it for her daughter and both her and JD renamed the song "For Baby, For Bobbie"
fireflywater 2 years ago
I didn't know that. I read that JD later changed it to "For Baby" because it's kinda like a lullaby, albeit folk style.
