  • A smaller version of the Ringworld is a Culture Orbital as found in Ian M Banks books which is what Halo Rings are more similar to.

  • I want to see a photo-realistic view of what it would look like from the ground.

  • @bastian74

I don't know what the view would be, but I know I suddenly feel small. Our continents are merely small islands compare to the...the...Gigantagea! Wow cool name I made. But by the way I wonder how long would the trip through this ocean take?

  • With soo much space overpopulation sounds like a joke.

  • Halo.

  • OMG this is awesome. I'm reading Ringworld for the second time right now. Amazing video. Thank you for bringing it to life (for those of us who suck at following Niven's descriptions LOL).

  • and i thought the halo rings and the ark was a megastructure.....

  • whats that golden thing in the huge ocean?

  • May I have permission to use this clip in a video I'm making? I'd be forever thankful, since it has to do with one of my books. :D

  • Saludos desde México. I like read larry niven :)

  • This is soul-shakingly well done! Starting on the map of Earth is the perfect way to give viewers a sense of the Ringworld's scale, and the way you pull back to reveal the Great Ocean and on is wonderfully timed. With today's technology, there should be a Ringworld movie by now! TANJ!

  • @paxpaul, Agree with your entire post.

  • Yeah what is that golden disk in the ocean? It looks about as big as Mercury.

  • @striderfly Read "Ringworld Engineers". It's Mars. :)

  • is the ring to scale?

  • very image you life in ringworld!

maybe total 90 zillion population in rignworld? lol ;p

  • Would the sun really fill like 1/5 of the distance to the surface of the ringworld? I thought it was like 1AU.

  • Excellent work. First time I've seen a really good rendition of what the Ringworld would look like. I would love to see more of this. How about a flight up through Fist-of-god, before Tunesmith plugged it, that is.

  • This could be the preview trailer for the Ringworld Movie.... There was a rumor that James Cameron was setting up a deal to do the movie, but it fell through. The only problem I have with it is there is no circular weather patterns on Ringworld. No Coriolis forces because there is no rotation

  • @spacestevie2

"...there is no circular weather patterns on Ringworld." Yup I know (well spotted) but you would get 'Von Karman vortex's' from any land mass that is tall enough to rupture air flow. Mind you this effect would certainly have given away the Map of Mars to any external observer as it would look like a huge billowing comet in the ocean!

  • @ufoalpha not necessarily, the unwavering flow of air that would eventually find its path would ultimately affect the surrounding air masses, as would any water flow. when one integrates temperature into this equation one can see that VKV effect would act radically different from what is observed upon earth or any other spheroid, considering the characteristics of what a 'storm' might do in that ring.

  • ergo! ringworld physics are unlike any we have experienced and should be puzzled over in depth. as shouldthe not to be forgotten, characters. chmeee is my hero

  • @spacestevie2

I just read a blurb on IMDB's RSS feed that it was only Cameron's involvement in the Ringworld movie that fell through, due in part to scheduling conflicts with another development deal called "Avatar 3."

The article says Ringworld is still in early development, but is slated for production starting in early 2013. Execs say "Ringworld will get made come hell or high water," and rather than deviate from Niven's work, the studio has opted to break the novel into a 3 part movie saga.

  • This could be the preview trailer for the Ringworld Movie.... There was a rumor that James Cameron was setting up a deal to do the movie, but it fell through.

  • Thats a lot of real estate........

  • This video makes God feel inadequate.

  • LOVE IT!! Is it as wide as it should be though?

My suggestion for the next render is the small seas and landmasses that make up much of the surface away from the great oceans.. fantastic work so far, i keep watching over and over!

  • Any chance you could do the firing up sequence for the star drive from the last ringworld book?

  • Hey where is Fist of God?

  • OMG i love this rendering hope to see your highlight other features of the ringworld !

  • Great job! Think the technology is almost ready to do Puppeteers and he Ringworld justice for a movie. There is so much great movie material in Known Space, as well as the "Mote in God's Eye" universe....

  • Thanks mate. If you can send me links to the correct placement I will happily re-render it! I'm working on a rim walls / spill mountains fly-by as no one has managed to nail it properly yet. I tell you now, they look weird...

  • @ufoalpha dude.... its been four months... do it doooo eeeet :)

  • @5thheadofcerberus. Mate! It's up there! I posted it a couple of days ago... Still a WIP though as I wanted to turn the camera around and look up at the end but as the current texture file for the floor is 2Gb I might melt my CPU processing a texture that will cover the width of the Ringworld at that scale...

  • @ufoalpha looks amazing bro

  • @ufoalpha I've just brought the first ringwold book and I plan on starting it latter today, before I got it I read a description on Wikipedia of how big it was...... but only now I've seen this do I feel like I've got a true a sense of it

  • This is fantastic. I don't even care that the Map of Earth's continents are polar-projected instead of polar-arranged, or that the Map of Mars is in the wrong place - every time I play this, it looks like the opening credits of a TV adaptation I'm dying to see.

  • I thought I cold detect curvature at the edge of the ring, possibly indicating the Spill Mtns and the rim walls.

  • Now this is what Halo's ring should be. The size of this ring is just... a universe of its own really. Imagine the creatures.. Evolution... My god I can't stop watching this.

  • Hm? halo? Hm?

  • @Sageboy13 WAS THE GAME HALO MADE BEFORE THE YEAR 1970!?

  • @illustriouschin No it was made in 2001

  • Where is the eye storm?

  • great sense of scale and perspective for a ring of such immense size. Thats how I pictured the ring while reading the book!

  • Could you make a tour of the ring??

  • What music was used in this video??

  • Has anyone heard of Halo? I know Halo got inspiration from this, but nobody mentions Halo.

  • @GuyInGhillieSuit Look at the comments, everyone who has played Halo has mentioned it.

  • Is it just me, or is that ring WAY too small?

  • Amazing!!!

Where are the other worlds? (Kzin, Kdat...)

  • Where are the other worlds? (Kzin, Kdat...)

  • I'm now imagining a civilization on such a world. Space travel would be easy, just build a freight elevator to the edge of the edge mountain ranges. And land would never be a problem, obviously. Civilization would expand outward like a mold, never stopping. By the time it got to the other end the starting point of civilization would have likely withered away and died due to war or climate shift.

  • thanks mr. niven.

  • the ring is.... still is kind small :/

  • The novel "Ringworld" is actually an inspiration for the video game franchise of Halo

Also, it would be cool to have a Ringworld movie, because we would definitely not need a Halo movie anymore, right?

  • The novel "Ringworld" is actually an inspiration for the video game franchise of Halo

  • AWESOME video! though if you're building something that huge you might as well build it on the surface of a planet and use the existing gravity...

  • @meowman9 i think your missing the point of constructing it in the first place, once built it gives massively more living space than a planet all conveniently in one place engineered to your specifications.

  • @meowman9

The ringworld itself used all the mass of every planet, asteroid, and comet in the system. You couldn't build it "on" anything anyway.

  • just read the book for the frist time and this looks marvelous !

  • if only humanity had a spare 50 thousand years and some staggering leaps in technology to actually attempt it.

  • @Edgebotv4 hah not even. a thousand is all it takes.

  • This made me ejaculate...

  • is it propable to accualy make an halo

  • Quincy Jones bought the movie rights for Ringworld years ago. So far there has been 1 failed early development for a film. Most probably, you'll NEVER see it happen. Unfortunately.

Part of the problem, unless Hollywood really screws it up (making it into an Avatar like piece of crap), the story (let alone the concept) is just way too cerebral for the mass market.

  • What is the golden disc in the ocean?

  • @P4r4bo14

The Map of Mars, polar projection (to scale) from the book; Ringworld by Larry Niven 1970

  • @ufoalpha I don't recall that from the book.

  • @P4r4bo14

My Bad! It has a major part to play in the sequel: 'Ringworld Engineers'. So you are right, It wasn't in the original book...

  • DAILY VARIETY: Early estimates project 'Ringworld' for 2015, but currently slated for pre-production in 4-Q-2011 with James Cameron's 'LightStorm Entertainment.'

No leaked confirmation as to whether Cameron will be involved directly in a creative capacity or perform his wizardry on the business side as the project's Exec Producer (as claimed by Hollywood insiders!)

Early estimates are budgeting the film at $500 mil (min) with a ceiling cap of $750-800 mil (max) w/ completion bonds and guarantor.

  • Hollywood will destroy Niven's works.

  • all i can say is:

    teela: Hayden Panettiere

    loius: Ken Watanabe

I love how you started out in the Map of Earth. If they ever make a movie from this series it will never do it justice. But lets hope they do anyway

  • Holy. SHIT. That is AWESOME.

  • I love the ringworld book

  • IS THERE GOING TO BE A FILM OF THIS????

  • WOW, that really puts into perspective how tiny we are. Nice work.

  • just finished reading this. a masterpiece if there ever was one. a well done TV series needs to be done ASAP...

  • Who would you cast as Louis and Teela? I assume Speaker and Nessus would be CGI. Well Nessus definately, Speaker could be an actor in make-up and suit I guess. My casting would be:

    Louis: Adrian Pasdar

    Teela: Sarah Lancaster

  • @AtheistGuy2

On Ringworld scale they would be more like microstorms.

  • Wow ! Now THIS is the Ringworld as I imagined it ! You've achieved a wonderful effect of it's enormous scale that I've never seen in any other attempt. If anyone ever gets around to making this wonderful series into a movie (or movies) they'd be crazy not to get you on the team. I get goosebumps every time I watch it. Thanks !!

  • halo

  • wait so are geogrophers and cartographers FAIL

  • I have been playing halo since 2002. Im shocked to see this after so many years...I can see it was quite successful back then, ive been wondering if there's a movie...?

  • @IsllayGirls SINCE 2002??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Actually not one.

"Larry Niven" is the proprietor of office and since 1970.

much work patience during imaginable science modern than Halo

  • Mindblowing!

  • I tried to make the same thing in Blender 3D a few years back, but it (and my pc) couldn't handle the scale. Nice work!

  • Halo

  • Great work. Ringworld would make for an awesome sci-fi adventure film. The Teela stuff may be a little out there, but could make for a great twist ending

  • Congratulations, man, and thanks for this video. It´s so tanj good! Love the dramatic audio and closing with the title!

  • You should have put in a random hurricane.

  • ummm... anyone here play halo???

  • @00tob LOL its such a similarity, and still, nothing mentioned by bungie about theyr inspiration for halo!

  • @00tob

hmmm... any of the halo morons read Ringworld, which came out 25 years before Halo??

Btw, Ringworld is the real deal. Halo orbits a gas giant. Ringworld is so giant that you can have over 10 jupiter size gas giants, side by side, covering the WIDTH of Ringworld

  • This needs "Journey of the Sorcerer" over it.

  • The coolest thing about this is that it's our Earth is 1:1 scale at the beggining. Can't imagine how really big that ring would be if it really existed... Kinda gives me the chills to be honest :)

  • Technically, according to the RINGWORLD novel, the Map of Earth on Ringworld was actually based on the tectonic position of continents as they were when the Ringworld was made; I believe the figure was two million years ago

  • ...the characters in the novel comment on the difference from today's Earth and that helps them identify the date of construction.

  • That's excellent. I would have liked to see a RINGWORLD movie by now. But you can tell the excellence of classic SF by how difficult-to-impossible it is to bring to the movie-screen, from the wild radical nature of its ideas. For example, STARSHIP TROOPERS by Robert Heinlein actually had mobile powered suits that jumped hundreds of yards at a time, tossing grenades at the aliens. They didn't attempt to portray THAT on film!

  • ...True Ringworld story: I was running the RINGWORLD tabletop RPG in the 1980s (made by Chaosium Inc.) and wanted the players to read the first novel (1970). The player said, "Yeah, yeah." Couple of weeks later he says, "THIS IS AN AMAZING NOVEL! THIS IS FANTASTIC! You should have told me to read it." "We did." "But you should have FORCED me!"

  • This is the best Ringworld clip ever. Bravo ufoalpha! Damn first timed seemed little a gorram movie teaser. Are you gonna continue this bit further or the Puppeteer's Fleet of Worlds next?

  • It's really hard to imagine something this huge but this did a great job.

  • i like

  • This is just amazing. Well done for producing such a monster !

  • lol dis looks like halo but biger

  • Very faithful to the original...just drop a Map of Kzin in there and it will be perfect! Looks like a director's previz before final effects. Simply wonderful! Fragomatik should give you an .obj file of his Lying Bastard, not to lower the value of what he/she has done, but just because you have better software.

  • @markkens9 There were many maps built into the Great Oval Ocean by the Ringworld builders to represent worlds. For example, Jinx (inhabited by the Bandersnatchi) is egg-shaped and the poles lie in vacuum. To simulate this on Ringworld both ends of the map shoot up dozens of miles into the sky, so you get the low atmospheric pressure AND the slope created by gravity. For more about Known Space locations, search exactly those words in Wikipedia.

  • halo :D

  • @88Jackob88 AINT HALO

  • super awesome, great job!!

  • and whats that big gold thing off to the side of the earth-shaped super continent?

  • @katikar1 mars

  • this is cool, but its lacking context, what is it exactly?

  • @katikar1 Larry Niven's Ringworld has a page on Wikipedia

  • Just found this, I'd love to see the Ringworld movie get started. Getting anything close to correct sense of scale is nearly impossible, this is the best I've seen. Good luck getting non-repeating textures for 600,000,000 miles of ring, lol. Even a fractal formula will show pattern at that scale.

  • (@RedeyesXBL)

    Tell me about it.....

  • @RedeyesXBL But thanks though!

  • @RedeyesXBL A movie? I couldn't see it happen. Ringworld really doesn't have a plot friendly to the movie media.

  • halo anyone?

  • @cottenmouthsnake as stated above, Bungie borrowed the idea from a book from the '70s

  • Beautiful work! Absolutely the *best* Ringworld model animation I've seen! Puts my meagre efforts to shame, but inspirational at the same time. Please keep producing these wonderful vids! (Favourited & subbed)

  • i like how the map of mars is just a big brown circle. looks like a cookie! lol

  • What, no flyby of the linear accelerator? No pass through Fist of God? Sheesh, man... get workin!

  • Thanks for the comments everyone! When this was posted on io9.com a lot of people kept saying "Halo ripoff!". Um no. Bungie borrowed the idea from Larry Niven's book from 1970.

The Earth map is 1:1 scale here and Polar projected (Like the Map of Mars) so when we pull-out and fly past the ring there is no way you would be able to define the spill mountains or rim walls.

  • @ufoalpha i love ringworld, and i agree that it is retarded that all the fucking (pardon my french) hao fanboys claim that ringworld is created after halo, when it is clearly the other way around, and the ringworld idea actually makes more sense to me

  • @ufoalpha How was this made?? What are the dimensions, orbital parameters and such???

  • finally a ringworld model that is to scale with the description, looks awesome!

  • I'd like to see one that moves the "camera" steadily closer to the surface, keeping it trained on the distant parts curving upward, with a number showing how many miles it is from the surface. 10M... 5M... 2M... 1M... 500K... 200K... 100K... 50K... all the way down to at least 100. Wouldn't even need effects that fancy, or even textures; I just want the sense of scale.

Plus maybe every million miles, you could add an Earth-sized sphere hovering an Earth-diameter above the center. :P

  • @skissorss yeah i know im sorry i just researched -.-'........ deleting comment

  • @gabrielk310 :P Glad you did! I'd recommend you read the book, it's fantastic!

  • That was just flat out amazing. Seriously.

  • When I spotted the Map of Mars, I got all giddy =D

  • I see texture repeats and they are very disconcerting. ID tech 4 time !

  • Gorgeous. Now all we need are the other 180 minutes. ;)

  • Great video! This is the best Ringworld video that I have seen so far. Do you have any plans for more?

  • @126er116

Many thanks! Yes I have more plans including a character study of a Kzin as I still haven't found any images that evoke a truly alien version. My next image though will be liar after it creamed in with Fist of God as a backdrop.

  • Good stuff! Nice to see there are some other Ringworld fans out there!
