I don't know what the view would be, but I know I suddenly feel small. Our continents are merely small islands compare to the...the...Gigantagea! Wow cool name I made. But by the way I wonder how long would the trip through this ocean take?
OMG this is awesome. I'm reading Ringworld for the second time right now. Amazing video. Thank you for bringing it to life (for those of us who suck at following Niven's descriptions LOL).
This is soul-shakingly well done! Starting on the map of Earth is the perfect way to give viewers a sense of the Ringworld's scale, and the way you pull back to reveal the Great Ocean and on is wonderfully timed. With today's technology, there should be a Ringworld movie by now! TANJ!
Excellent work. First time I've seen a really good rendition of what the Ringworld would look like. I would love to see more of this. How about a flight up through Fist-of-god, before Tunesmith plugged it, that is.
This could be the preview trailer for the Ringworld Movie.... There was a rumor that James Cameron was setting up a deal to do the movie, but it fell through. The only problem I have with it is there is no circular weather patterns on Ringworld. No Coriolis forces because there is no rotation
"...there is no circular weather patterns on Ringworld." Yup I know (well spotted) but you would get 'Von Karman vortex's' from any land mass that is tall enough to rupture air flow. Mind you this effect would certainly have given away the Map of Mars to any external observer as it would look like a huge billowing comet in the ocean!
@ufoalpha not necessarily, the unwavering flow of air that would eventually find its path would ultimately affect the surrounding air masses, as would any water flow. when one integrates temperature into this equation one can see that VKV effect would act radically different from what is observed upon earth or any other spheroid, considering the characteristics of what a 'storm' might do in that ring.
ergo! ringworld physics are unlike any we have experienced and should be puzzled over in depth. as shouldthe not to be forgotten, characters. chmeee is my hero
I just read a blurb on IMDB's RSS feed that it was only Cameron's involvement in the Ringworld movie that fell through, due in part to scheduling conflicts with another development deal called "Avatar 3."
The article says Ringworld is still in early development, but is slated for production starting in early 2013. Execs say "Ringworld will get made come hell or high water," and rather than deviate from Niven's work, the studio has opted to break the novel into a 3 part movie saga.
This could be the preview trailer for the Ringworld Movie.... There was a rumor that James Cameron was setting up a deal to do the movie, but it fell through.
My suggestion for the next render is the small seas and landmasses that make up much of the surface away from the great oceans.. fantastic work so far, i keep watching over and over!
Great job! Think the technology is almost ready to do Puppeteers and he Ringworld justice for a movie. There is so much great movie material in Known Space, as well as the "Mote in God's Eye" universe....
Thanks mate. If you can send me links to the correct placement I will happily re-render it! I'm working on a rim walls / spill mountains fly-by as no one has managed to nail it properly yet. I tell you now, they look weird...
@5thheadofcerberus. Mate! It's up there! I posted it a couple of days ago... Still a WIP though as I wanted to turn the camera around and look up at the end but as the current texture file for the floor is 2Gb I might melt my CPU processing a texture that will cover the width of the Ringworld at that scale...
@ufoalpha I've just brought the first ringwold book and I plan on starting it latter today, before I got it I read a description on Wikipedia of how big it was...... but only now I've seen this do I feel like I've got a true a sense of it
This is fantastic. I don't even care that the Map of Earth's continents are polar-projected instead of polar-arranged, or that the Map of Mars is in the wrong place - every time I play this, it looks like the opening credits of a TV adaptation I'm dying to see.
Now this is what Halo's ring should be. The size of this ring is just... a universe of its own really. Imagine the creatures.. Evolution... My god I can't stop watching this.
I'm now imagining a civilization on such a world. Space travel would be easy, just build a freight elevator to the edge of the edge mountain ranges. And land would never be a problem, obviously. Civilization would expand outward like a mold, never stopping. By the time it got to the other end the starting point of civilization would have likely withered away and died due to war or climate shift.
@meowman9 i think your missing the point of constructing it in the first place, once built it gives massively more living space than a planet all conveniently in one place engineered to your specifications.
Quincy Jones bought the movie rights for Ringworld years ago. So far there has been 1 failed early development for a film. Most probably, you'll NEVER see it happen. Unfortunately.
Part of the problem, unless Hollywood really screws it up (making it into an Avatar like piece of crap), the story (let alone the concept) is just way too cerebral for the mass market.

Btw, Ringworld is the real deal. Halo orbits a gas giant. Ringworld is so giant that you can have over 10 jupiter size gas giants, side by side, covering the WIDTH of Ringworld
The coolest thing about this is that it's our Earth is 1:1 scale at the beggining. Can't imagine how really big that ring would be if it really existed... Kinda gives me the chills to be honest :)
Technically, according to the RINGWORLD novel, the Map of Earth on Ringworld was actually based on the tectonic position of continents as they were when the Ringworld was made; I believe the figure was two million years ago
That's excellent. I would have liked to see a RINGWORLD movie by now. But you can tell the excellence of classic SF by how difficult-to-impossible it is to bring to the movie-screen, from the wild radical nature of its ideas. For example, STARSHIP TROOPERS by Robert Heinlein actually had mobile powered suits that jumped hundreds of yards at a time, tossing grenades at the aliens. They didn't attempt to portray THAT on film!
...True Ringworld story: I was running the RINGWORLD tabletop RPG in the 1980s (made by Chaosium Inc.) and wanted the players to read the first novel (1970). The player said, "Yeah, yeah." Couple of weeks later he says, "THIS IS AN AMAZING NOVEL! THIS IS FANTASTIC! You should have told me to read it." "We did." "But you should have FORCED me!"
This is the best Ringworld clip ever. Bravo ufoalpha! Damn first timed seemed little a gorram movie teaser. Are you gonna continue this bit further or the Puppeteer's Fleet of Worlds next?
Very faithful to the original...just drop a Map of Kzin in there and it will be perfect! Looks like a director's previz before final effects. Simply wonderful! Fragomatik should give you an .obj file of his Lying Bastard, not to lower the value of what he/she has done, but just because you have better software.
@markkens9 There were many maps built into the Great Oval Ocean by the Ringworld builders to represent worlds. For example, Jinx (inhabited by the Bandersnatchi) is egg-shaped and the poles lie in vacuum. To simulate this on Ringworld both ends of the map shoot up dozens of miles into the sky, so you get the low atmospheric pressure AND the slope created by gravity. For more about Known Space locations, search exactly those words in Wikipedia.
Just found this, I'd love to see the Ringworld movie get started. Getting anything close to correct sense of scale is nearly impossible, this is the best I've seen. Good luck getting non-repeating textures for 600,000,000 miles of ring, lol. Even a fractal formula will show pattern at that scale.

@ufoalpha i love ringworld, and i agree that it is retarded that all the fucking (pardon my french) hao fanboys claim that ringworld is created after halo, when it is clearly the other way around, and the ringworld idea actually makes more sense to me
I'd like to see one that moves the "camera" steadily closer to the surface, keeping it trained on the distant parts curving upward, with a number showing how many miles it is from the surface. 10M... 5M... 2M... 1M... 500K... 200K... 100K... 50K... all the way down to at least 100. Wouldn't even need effects that fancy, or even textures; I just want the sense of scale.
Plus maybe every million miles, you could add an Earth-sized sphere hovering an Earth-diameter above the center. :P
Many thanks! Yes I have more plans including a character study of a Kzin as I still haven't found any images that evoke a truly alien version. My next image though will be liar after it creamed in with Fist of God as a backdrop.
A smaller version of the Ringworld is a Culture Orbital as found in Ian M Banks books which is what Halo Rings are more similar to.

I see texture repeats and they are very disconcerting. ID tech 4 time !

Great video! This is the best Ringworld video that I have seen so far. Do you have any plans for more?

@126er116
Many thanks! Yes I have more plans including a character study of a Kzin as I still haven't found any images that evoke a truly alien version. My next image though will be liar after it creamed in with Fist of God as a backdrop.
