  • Who gave that kid a beer?

  • ... what it comes down to is when people have the ability to back up will they? every time I hear a story about a gmail outage: my answer is not why is Google failing everyone, it is why don't you people back up your Gmail to a local T-Bird

  • ... the rule of if it is not in 3 places is increasingly becoming more and more important as this tradition takes palace. If you look at cloud solutions as a universally accessible back up, then the issue is a non issue as anyone knows when your back up is your only copy it is not a back up any more.

Now the point of if the back up is proprietary so it needs the service OK, right not a backup. But if the docs are od-downloadable and the email IMAP accessible...

  • Some of this is very good points. And some of it is FOSS FUD. You can back up your gmail or google docs, and export it to anywhere you want. All my G-stuff exists in 3 places: Google's server, my local drive, and an off site back up. Google could have a data loss or go out of biz today and I would have no loss of data.

I am all for 100% open source, but am more for open standards. Open Standards more than open source is what lets needed back up to prevent data Apocalypse. ...

  • Very badly edited .... great content!

  • @bit4man What did I do wrong?

  • @gordonmcdowell There's a lot of short-cuts that interrupts the flow. Clearly you tried to make it shorter by cutting out "the fluff" but the result is very shaky and it looks like you're trying to manipulate the content. Almost like cutting individual words together from someone to make them say something they did not want to say.

Listening to the video is great though. It's the visual side that makes me a bit dizzy.

  • @bit4man OK, thanks for the feedback. Yes, I'm usually focused on the audio and just editing video to make the audio editing as tight as possible... I should probably back off a bit, leave a bit of stammering and pauses in. I've been toning it down a bit since I edited COSSFest.

  • @gordonmcdowell May I ask what Linux (I presume) app you used for editing?

  • @bit4man SONY not-Linux VEGAS. I kept looking at Linux solutions every year, didn't find anything that fit my needs, so 2 years ago shelled out $ for VEGAS. So now I'm not checking constantly, until I need to decide on VEGAS upgrade $ vs switching platforms. I was looking forward to VideoLAN's editor taking off, but it looks like development has stalled.

  • I honestly don't remember last time I've seen anything remotely as interesting as this on YouTube!

  • @kad3t I have to agree!

And if google was hosting this event perhaps they are not as bad as we all like to think, just not as good as they pretend to be, else these topics would not arise. (well I say all but..)

  • @dislexable

Personally I do use some of google's services like gmail because it's convenient to me. I do not write or keep on my email account anything remotely as important as to worry about losing it if anything would ever happen and don't mind small bars of ads around it as I realize that this is how they earn money to provide their free service. Honestly, I never click the ads even though I know they're customized to target my "needs" as I like to research everything myself.

  • @kad3t

Indeed I also use gmail. Have several accounts for all my separate personality disorders, otherwise known as internet persona's. :P

I dont feel worried about loosing anything. What worries me is if they use the information other than for focusing advertising.

The comment about a second hitler just about nails it on the head!

Its not hard to draw parallels between USA and Germany late 1930's. Find a fascism traits list and see how many boxes you can tick. You will be shocked!

  • @dislexable

You may be right but... But it's XXI Century and one can acquire much more by harvesting money through adds then conquering a World or nation that will in return answer with guerrilla actions or general unhappiness and unwillingness to cooperate. It's better to have happy customers willing to click an add every know and then than ready to explode people fighting for what they believe in - freedom. I say, we're quite safe on this front but as usual, I may be wrong. ^_^

  • @kad3t

LOL! Darn keyboard. know = now. ^_^

  • @kad3t

    There is a quote that I heard yesterday that conveniently relevant;

"The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater." - Frank Zappa

  • @kad3t to add further when a society is hoodwinked, even aliitle, is it so hard the convince people that they arent being lied to. Why? By agreeing they would admit to being fools, and if the signs were obvious also ignorant. They take advantage of this fact and just do it more.

So are you telling me that you arent being lead into believing things in society today even a little!

  • @dislexable

I like the quote a lot. I do realize as well that governments are not telling us, little people, everything. Only what we need to know or hear. The point is it was always like that and always will be. Same translates to big companies, like Google, Microsoft, Apple and alike. They don't sell or offer what we need and couldn't get otherwise, they sell/offer what we believe that we require and couldn't get otherwise in same quality and/or form factor.

  • @dislexable

That said. I don't mind it at most of the time. Like I said before I use gmail and few other supposedly free services that profit from collecting data about me and displaying personalized ads to me. I *never* click those ads, when I need to find something I do my own research for it. And as for data that they collect I am by no means an mental exhibitionist but I really have no information about ma available on the Internet that I would be afraid or ashamed to come out.
