Have all the pieces been accounted for like the parachute, the heat shield, and the lander housing? That object has to be one of those three otherwise we do have an anomaly here.

What does the ESA (European Space Agency) have to do with this image phrom Phoenix? I thought the images were received and processed through JPL in California under the aegis of NASA.

Weird! ha ha, I found a Skull! Calling it Skinner Skull! photo 281706496 taken 5/25/2008, skull is bottm of photo, near center, you can see the eyesockets, that is another weird one! Dust devil? It's a martian land whale breaching! :)

People are saying it's a dust devil, which I don't buy.

I'm not sure it's part of the craft anymore either. The lander let go of its heat shield and parachute, both of which probably came down to the martian surface.

This doesn't look like the heat shield, as that's a dark round object, or the parachute, which would probably be lying flat on the ground because there was a general lack of wind at the time of landing.

So I'm not sure what it is...

Dust devil's on Mars don't look like that, at least the ones I've seen from spirit and opportunity.

Well from this picture, you know the "object" is far away. And I've seen pictures of other dust devils that look similar to this.

What the heck do you think it is?

Is it some part of the spacecraft? I wish they'd release overhead images of the landing probes descent so that we could see if it is there before the probe touches down.

I can't really be sure of what it is. I thought it was a glitch until I noticed the tail section on the lower half of it.

Yea I figured the same.

I thought it was a calibration mark similar to ones seen in past missions, but after seeing the 'tail' as you call it I'm pretty sure it's actually there.

I don't think it's the parachute judging by its size and structure. A parachute would likely be strewn across a wider area.
