What live showing is this from? There is a longer version that I am realyl trying to find. It is definitely from this recording but it goes for another 2 minutes or so?
Bobby always was most comfortable in front of a Big Band like his idol , Frank Sinatra, with a Swingin' song like "Beyond the Sea" and it shows in this video quite well. Bobby was also at his best at singing this type of Swing Song too!!!
Im gonna ask a question which may sound stupid but if "Tommy Sands" is a singer why would his lover be standing on him? Doesnt golden sands make more sense, like it was originally? This is a serious question im not trying to make a joke out of the song, Bobby Darin is a legend. Im just wondering thats all
What a talented man. He sang, did comedy, impressions, danced, played instruments. He left too soon. Please watch me sing a few oldies too,if you get a chance. love Dan Dell
Too bad the camera man didn't focus on the drummer right away when Bobby said....GIVE IT TO THE DRUMMER NOW! Bobby should have probly said....DO IT CAMERA MAN...DO IT WILL YA!! WHAT THE HELL IS TAKIN YA???
@JCstudios04 yeah, watching it again, the drummer has a whole 13 seconds of killer drum solo action and the asleep at the wheel camera man or woman only caught 2 1/2 seconds worth. Just great. He couldn't even have done good justice to a great drum solo back in that time. It's a great song. I really like watching it once in a while.
Bobby could do it all; sing, dance, write songs, act, etc. I love the dvd, Bobby Darin, Mack is Back, that this is from. I remember watching his show originally. He was the best. I miss you Bobby.
@4everbobby If you like his music so much, I recommend you to get one of his original vinyl records..they are awesome! completely different feeling than digitalized ones...one of the reasons why vynils dont pass out =)
@isagagenius. I agree about the old vinyl. Plus because of their size, they usually had neat covers. I still have and listen to, my original Bobby Darin lps and others. The only time I listen to the cd versions are in my car. I even bought a jukebox that plays 45s, so I could relive my youth in the 60s, as that's what we kids bought and played then. Man, am I getting to be an old fossil ! Yikes !!
It's hard to watch Bobby Darin in the last few years of his life, when his health took a turn for the worst. I can see him hit his wrist at 0:30 to get the circulation going... this man had more heart and passion for making the most of life than many people I know.
Bobby Darin received the GRAMMY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD TONIGHT! His son Dodd Darin gave a beautiful speech on his behalf in yesterday's ceremony. It's on You Tube under " Bobby Darin Lifetime Award". Bobby was a versatile, multitalented genius!
The first is from "Just a Blue Serge Suit" by Irving Berlin. The second is Bobby's take, I think, on "A Tisket, A Tasket". The best known version of that is sung by Ella Fitzgerald.
Actually I think my first answer wasn't quite correct. The song Bobby is singing is "Blue Serge Suit" that was sung by Cab Calloway. I think it is a different song from Irving Berlin's "Just a Blue Serge Suit". I'm not sure who wrote the Cab Calloway song. I see a couple of versions of it available for download on Amazon.
Why Americans are all the time make ridiculous comparisons? Frank Sinatra was Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin was Bobby Darin. Each one with his talent and period!!
Sinatra clearly had the edge in purity of voice, and certainly in longevity. Bobby was the original Roman Candle.....flamed out too early. But in his prime, between about '59 and '65 no live performer could touch him. He was a great songwriter, (about 170), and played 6 or 7 instruments. He was a brilliant impressionist, and stand-up comic...a fact few people know. He was a successful producer in the booth, like for Wayne Newton. He was the consummate performer...far more than Frank.
Young Frank had a very sweet voice with range. when he got older of course it left him..Bobby never got to get old but as you can hear here. Hes not at his best. and hes no where near as all as Sinatra was when his voice left. Personally I think Tony Bennett and jack Jones had better voices than bobby or frank. Listen to Jack Jones Christmas Is..he IS the best of the crooners.
It's Tommy Sands, a playful jab at one of the hot singers of that time..sort of an Elvis type who was engaged to Nancy Sinatra. Notice that after Darin sings the line, he slaps himself on the wrist -- like he's a bad boy for doing that joke. Darin did the line quite often when doing this number.
Bobby was certainly the best all around vocalist of my lifetime. Wheather swing, jazz, big band or rock and roll. He did them all, and even wrote and preformed a few country songs. Considering he did all that in about 15 years. The rest have had a lifetime to get it right. Bobby was truly a class act in all respects.
There is not a lot to watch because the time was so short. Thanks to everyone who is posting these and may they find more.
In my opinion Bobby was way talented than Sinatra - certainly his voice had more range and he covered several genres of music and could write music, too.
Get real. You obviously haven't listened to Frank enough. Try "Old Man River" if range is what you want.
Want acting? I suggest you start with his Academy Award performance in "From Here To Eternity". You might also check out "The Man With the Golden Arm" if you have the stomach for it.
Wanna know why? He never thought he belonged with the greats like Sinatra because he was a bit late to the game.
Because of his big nose, perhaps, he thought. Because of his way-too-early thinning hair. Because he missed the boat with the tides of music history... Elvis and the girl groups and the doowops like Dion were taking over after all.
Bobby. Bobby. Sandra loved you with all her heart and so did we...
History will treat him alot kinder than the critics and music industry people and so will we. He had more talent than any of the others but they wouldn't let us see him enough. I think he has far more sex appeal than Elvis or Sinatra either one, and sense of rhythm. Elvis was too "pretty", not that good a dancer, Sinatra not good looking at all in my book and did not write songs or even play an instrument. True talent outshines all.
And then the Four Seasons & then the British groups were just around the corner. (You left out those as being why Bobby was perhaps nervous).
I do think Bobby had one of the best vocals for a man to go on a record or even live. It's too bad at the time that more people didn't say that to him (maybe he would have survived past his 1973 death).
Still stalkin my Sicilian dream lover. Wow, first time I've seen this rendition, God, how this man could improvise off the top of his head, change stuff, do comedy, right in the middle of a song and never miss a beat.. Smooooooooth.
The music world lost a brilliant musician way way way too soon. His talent and stage presence will never be copied. RIP Bobby, thanks for the great memories
hahahaha! My lover stands on "Tommy Sands" (and then he slaps his wrist for joking!" If i remember right, Tommy Sands was also a singer/actor of the 1950's. I guess he must have been a rival of some kind. Anyone remember?
Hey, uh how about you go fuck yourself. We don't want The Jonas Brother (A.K.A. Gaywad Trio) ruining a timeless, beautiful, majestic, soothing, timeless jazz classic.
I'm sorry, but I don't usually communicate with the mentally challenged or people who do not know how to write, so I can't understand your comment. Maybe someday you'll learn how to read and write and overcome the psychological trauma and damage that your rapist father caused you.
The Jonas Brothers will be washing cars in two years time. Wait and see. Bobby Darin is legend and was such a masculine man with more sex appeal in his little pinky than those diaper wearing, thumb sucking Jonas Brothers who keeps every 12 year old girl in America in wet panties.
oops i clicked wrong and i downrated your comment, but thats going to hapen. those bastards have great talent, but they just only apreciate mor the appealing than the music, its used in everything!

He's so happy. He had a wonderful personality. I love his humor.
I like when he smacks himself on the hand at :27, after substituting "Tommy Sands" for golden sands.

I think he did that to stimulate the blood circulation.
