They formed a "conjecture" which tells us they formed a belief based on incomplete information. Since Jesus was in heaven, he couldn't exactly tell the people he didn't die because that would not be possible. God could not tell them also because he only talked to Jesus at the time.

This is the central focus of Christianity. But why do Christians think he was crucified? Because Allah admits that he made it appear so.
