  • People already have synthetic implants, lawl.

  • It can be debated either way whether or not humans will ever defeat biological aging and death entirely, but all you've done here is said "it's not going to happen". What is for sure is that medical technology is advancing all the time, and there is no particular reason why humans could not use medical assitance to live indefinitely, so long as sufficient technology exists. The question is when, not if, this will happen.

  • Random talk about Kayne at the end? lol

  • The SENS Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to defeating and reversing the aging process and curing age related diseases. It is not science fiction. It is reality and some early forms of SENS medicines are being tested in living beings such as mice with positive results. In 25 or so years we will achieve rejuvination medicine that can make a 60 year old look 20 or 30 again. You can look up their site and even donate to their cause which I highly recomend. This guy has no clue.

  • Um we are already immortal dude. Haven't you been paying attention? Your life IS a simulation. Everything your computer brain processes as your senses are simply ones and zeroes. Take some choline bitartrate and have some lucid dreams... maybe then you will understand the REALITY (that you aren't anything more than a point of consciousness experiencing a world that appears physical through the narrow scope of our senses, but is really just energy.) DUh. ;-)

  • @thecrashfantasy

Is this true? If it is that is amazing.

  • @jmario232 Is anything true? One can never be sure.

  • I don't get this video. You keep saying it isn't possible, yet give no indication that you actually know what you're talking about. I personally have no idea what immortality involves or how it would work, but I'm not acting as if I know anything.

  • You’ve misinterpreted Kurzweil so outrageously! Rolling on Floor Laughing my ass off. Thanks! Anyone who has read any of his books would kick your ass in any debate, when they stop laughing!

  • If the sun goes supernova, no immortal will just break out the suntan lotion. He should find a spaceship & get outta here. No there is no true immortality. I will still try not to get hit by a bus.

20 yrs? Immortals live today... it's a lifestyle, U must love to learn & accept truth of things no matter how uncomfortable U R with it so U may find answers & use them. LIve a healthy life, Exercise, eat well. Calorie restriction buys U time. TA-65 may buy more... until the next advance.

  • True immortality is probably impossible, which might be a good thing, but biological immortality already exists in other species. With the rate at which technological advancement has been accelerating who knows what can happen in 20 years. It could be 20 years it could be 100 for all most of us actually know, but to say its impossible is just silly. I wouldn't be too surprised if Kurzweil isn't that far off.

  • You have no idea what you are talking about.

    Immortality is practically here.

You are actu ally having a negative reaction to it because you have a bias against doing it. You don't want others to do it so you are lashing out at it and discounting things you do not understand. Just go about your pointless life and die. I am on a much longer journey.

  • @Achaeosic That last sentence created a manly tear of happiness on my face- Thumbed Up

  • if you go back in time and say to 1950's people :" one day will have portable touch screen intelligent cell phone with internet" they will say :"bullcrap" but here we are... Even sci-fi movies of 1950's were not even dreaming of the technologies we got today so if to choose to blind yourself well it's up to you...

  • We won't get there since the Illuminati are already taking over the world and plan to reduce the population by 90%.

  • Ray Kurzweil DOESNT say our organs will be replace by machines by 2020.

What he said is that nanobots will repair our organs. Now will it be in 2020??

Regardless genetic & biological scientists are currently trying to clone or grow organs. That is probably much closer comming about than with nanobots.

For example the case of the woman who had parts of her throat replace by a lad grown organ.

  • @1NX9 Agreed. Cloned replacement organs will become an industry that provides a natural replacement organ when one is failing. Artificial organs will probably never truly replace an organs functions exactly. I don't like having to depend upon nanotech or artificial organs to live. I want scientists to figure out a way to tweek the human machine to make it immortal which may eventually lead us to a point where our DNA must be removed, nucleus by nucleus and replaced with upgrades.

  • The only fact he provides here is that Kanye West is a douchebag

  • Suck ma dick and touch your wife's breast and fuck her bitch

  • 30 years later we could get a phone for 200 bucks or less and have 16 gb and has 100s of uses for a fraction of the price

  • Do you know how fast technology changes 30 years ago you could get a cell phone for 40000 dollars and had bad reception and expensive minutes

  • There may be an immortal jellyfish. Theres info about it over the net.

So I say immortality is possible.

  • im catholic and i am spiritual, but i just wanna say from a scientific point of view, your soul is made up of hormones, genetics and neurones.......

  • your not going to be immortal, the technology then will be like contraception... nanobots in your body will prevent each cell in your body from aging and they will heal injuries for you..... immortality is life with no end and that's impossible

  • @SM96UK The word impossible is has always been and always will be, false. That word is never a part of my vocabulary.

  • only point you prove is how unprepared, uneducated, unthought thourgh, and utterly flawful argument that people against kurzweil have. you only convinced me more into kurzweil

  • once upon a time, man thought that it would be impossible for a human to withstand a speed of over 30 miles an hour.......but yet.....lol

  • @rhykko77

    You are soo right!

-At one time it was rare for humans to live past 30. But its been done.

-They said horseless carriages is an immpossiblity. But its been done.

-They said flight was immpossible. But its been done.

-They said traveling to space and back is impossible. But its been done.

With genetic research. Human Genome Project. Cloning organs. Gene therapy.

    Nanotechnology etc ......

  • But yes, Kanye is a Douche bag

  • You don't replace the organs. You could use nanobots to maintain and sustain your your body to last. You're just a pessimist. You don't replace your entire body, btw.

  • You seem like you know so much of what you are talking about, especially the last part about kenya west.

  • have fun being dead retard..

  • It is true. If you don't want people to live forever then don't do it. They won't live forever to you cause you will be in heaven or hell so it won't matter.

  • REAL I DISCOVERED THE SECRETS OF IMORTALITY THE RELEVALION IN TIME IS TO BE FOR EVER IN THE SAME SHAPE EMOTIONAL MENTAL PHISICAL LIKE ONE TEENAGER..WHO WANT TO REALIZE THIS MAN OR WOMAN COMPATIBLE CAN CONTACT ME.THE FIRST OF ALL LIKE IMPORTANCE IS TO ATTRACT MUCH MORE YNN AND YANG ENERGY AND TO BLEND THIS IN YOUR BODY WITH HEALTY FOOD.THEN YOU MUST TO KNOW TO THING AND DO NOT CREATE BLOCKAGES IN YOUR BODY.YOU CAN LIVE TILL THE ACCIDENTAL DEATH.MY ID IS MERKHURY@YAHOO.COM.

  • He's probably a chronic skeptic. Could we achieve immorality in 20 years? Who knows. I don't have the knowledge as to how far science has reached or where it will be 20 years from now, but I'm pretty certain that "life extension" will be possible for sure. Adding 2, 3 or more decades to our life span is realistic.

  • "we dont know how... so its not going to happen."

  • Who knows what we'll be able to do in 2029! Science is rocketing forward to unknown places. the technoligy in some MOBILE PHONES is faster and smarter than what they sent Neil Armstong to the MOON with in '69!!! Thats not all that long ago... By '29, who knows people could be LIVING on the moon.

  • we don't know about the brain you are right but we will in 2029. and what's with placing our soul into something else ? ... it will stay in our brains that's it... but i agree with people who says you underestimate (don't get) the power or exponential evolution

  • This guy is such a fucking moron. Hey dude how about you go take a math course so you can understand what the implications of what expendential growth means. Until then shut your fucking mouth you uneducated prick!!!!!

  • saying that it is impossible is the first sign that it will be possible, sorry bro

  • Cant wait to see your face going splat into the camera!

  • Hey man, I'd rather listen to a scientist who can predict the future quite well than some christfag who claims immortality is impossible with no facts other than "its not a reality" or just name off characters in books and movies.

  • dislikes on this video say everything. Don waste your time watching this.

  • "Immortality is bullcrap because Yoda isn't real. Therefore..."

Everything you say is so monumentally stupid that I can't believe it came from someone who's able to drive a car, it sounds like the kind of thing that an ape would say if you taught it language.

  • I think 75-100 years is a much more accurate timeline, But that said, I realize Kurzweil is in a much better position to accurate.

I hope he is correct as i have no quarrel with living for 1000years or more, but the cynic in me has a hard time accepting that reality.

If he is right and humanity is on the brink of immortality---Holy Shit!!!!!!!

Ofcourse we aren't talking true immortality as that is impossible, but living for thousands of years is not a bad runner up!

  • BRING ON THE SINGULARITY

  • I never listen to the I-know-more-than-you naysayers against the Singularity movement. If the public will wants it, it'll happen. Plain and simple.

The advancements will be further facilitated by the open source and hacker communities. Already, the torrent communities are ubiquitous. Almost every single popular/semi-popular movie and song is available for free online. There's no way that the media and software corporations will be able to keep up with it. Physical nano-products will be next.

  • Alright, so I guess iphones are science fiction too.. This guy is so fukin dumb it's not even funny...

  • "..we don't know enough.." Talk for yourself, YOU don't know enough. Or better, you don't know shit. All the stuff you said being bullcrap is actually scientifically proved to be possible and will probably happen before 2050. Now stop making videos to show people your ignorance.

  • You just watch, it's GONNA happen!!!!!

  • Theoretically different forms of Immortality should be possible.

    e.g. Whole brain emulation.

    Soul? Err...sorry what.

  • P.S. Whilst I disagree with this I do tend to enjoy these blogs.

  • Comment removed

  • Low intelligence life forms like worms, slugs, pigs and jellyfish have my respect. They don't get involved in things they don't understand. This brainless twat could learn a valuable lesson by observing their behaviour.

  • This guy's logic: "Science is wrong because science fiction."

    HURR

  • thumbs up for that kanye west comment!:)

  • Wow, how stupid are you bro? You completely misinterpreted Ray Kurzweil. You obviously know nothing about biology because there are several known species that exist today that live forever (assuming they aren't killed unnaturally) such as Turitopsis nutricula or Hydrozoan, not to mention other species such as Cyprine Arctica Islandica or Quahog that live in excess of 400 years. Furthermore, he never suggested we would replace entire organs, just cells.

  • have fun being dead while im alive LOL

  • Are you living under a rock? You should pay more attention to shit

  • Ignorant? Religious? Old Minded? Stupid? You choose. WE will live forever; i'm not sure about you tho.

  • Why don't you think that it cannot happen? Technology accelerates, and has been accelerating exponentially. Kurzweil did not say that we are going to be immortal by 2029, but rather that scientists will have the full understanding of how the human brain functions. He also stated that if you live long enough, till the next advancements in medicine and biotechnology arrive, then you can subsequently keep on increasing your life span (i.e. "living long enough to live forever").

  • jwb10600. No offense or anything but this video of yours is getting very poor ratings. Probably because you are suffering from a state of denial. I have heard on the tv various methods of combating age related illnesses. These while not stopping the process are surpressing it. Stemcell therapies are already going public. In 20 years there is no telling where this technology would take us. I think you are just spouting hot air in this video. Also watch the road while you talk.

  • Immortality... You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

  • I take Kurzweil's hypothesis extremely seriously considering his track record and previous predictions. Believe it or not the "future" is now.

  • Giving a "speech" while driving, YOU wont achieve immortality, thats for sure, lol.

  • What a bitter angry face.

  • Harry Potter, Star Wars and Highlander seems to be the extent of this guys reading. I'm not sure whethr Mr. Kurzweil's ideas will happen in the time frame that he suggests but the guy in this video is clearly an unread hillbilly.

  • @jwb10600 OK, lets imagine you in the 1960's. Someone comes up to you and says "Hey, I bet in 40 years, we will understand every single part of our DNA, all of it and what each DNA marker means and does". From how you treat Ray's predictions, I bet you would say it impossible. Today, its been done for 10 years. WE have the map for our genome. The same is starting to be done with the brain. You seem to think it can't happen because we don't know everything about it. That is ignorance.

  • idiot

  • 4 people are apparently cavemen.

  • You think what your saying is true but the 46 critics who watched this video said otherwise. Make that 47 because I am also voting this down you close minded brick brain.

  • bullcrap. nice word. suits the scale of the mind we're hearing from in this cute little driving guy. sounds like a christian. good luck to this guy.

  • While science will probably not find a way to extend people's lives modestly in 20 years from now, science will reverse aging over the next few hundred years or so. The whole thing with the mind uploading, I think we're a thousand years or more away from that one. lol

  • @Prolite : you found that with extensive study of all relevant disciplines? Or just, as an intermediate position between this video, and the position of kurzweil, as to not to completely conform to this video, but also not completely not conform?

  • @GRIJZEKAK All technologies are related to their predecessors. In regards to mind uploading, there's no predecessor technology to that, not even close. In regards to extending people's lives, biologists still have no clue about metabolism nor can they pint point the thousands of different genes responsible for the gene expression of extending aging. Furthermore, nanotechnology for biomedical purposes -- a prerequisite, it still a theoretical science. It's not even in it's infancy yet.

  • @Prolite : knowledge ís accelerating. maybe what we know now is nothing compared to what we know in ten years. if we have an exponential (doubling) growth of knowledge , then if we now have 1/100 of the problem solved, then by 7 years we might have 100/100 of the problem solved (2^7=128)

  • @GRIJZEKAK It's not that simple. The nanotechnology is probably possible because it's already being used in clothing and to make computer chips. But for the whole aging thing, scientists are still clueless about what causes aging -- because if they weren't, they'd be able to give a definite time frame for slowing aging process by the laws you've mentioned. The mind uploading thing is in the far future. Scientists know jack squat about the human brain, nevermind protein folding.

  • @Prolite : still, I don't think it will take that much time discovering more about the human brain, but it indeed probably does not double every year. However, if we use neuroscience to further strengthen our brain, knowledge will accelerate faster and faster. Or perhaps by means of AI which can become smarter than us over decade(s) which perhaps can do research for us (if we are able to program it that way, and not in a murdering way :D).

  • @GRIJZEKAK In regards to making ourselves smarter or AI doing research for us, that all depends on when quantum computers become a reality and when they are much more powerful than the human brain. This isn't expected until at least 2050 or later, although IBM may fool everybody. And even still, a quantum computer has to be programmed to "think" and to research. That takes years and years. This whole singularity thing is not going to be THAT transforming. Cmputers only understand computations.

  • @Prolite : I heard someone who argued that AI can already do the following : computing, pattern recognition, creativity, and others, on the same level as the human brain or better. There was some area in which AI was not equal or better than human. Unfortunately, I don't remember which area it was. "Quantum Computing Day 3: Does an Explanation of Higher Brain Fun..." is the video in which this is explained I think.

  • @Prolite : scientists do know what causes aging! aubrey de grey mentions 7 factors. look it up on youtube.

  • @Prolite 1 teacher told me. If in future brain information can be transported to a new body. Lets say you have a clone of your self and u can Transfer all the brain information in to the next brain ( I Mean by YOU ). So if you transfered in to the next brain (like cd copy) but didnt delete the information from the first brain were would you be in a first body or in the second ?

  • forever mabye not, but how about the choice to live as long as you desire?

  • Not reality today, but it will be tomorrow!

  • Ray Kurzweil > jwb10600 need I say more. Ray rocks.

  • I bet this guy will never make it to the year 2029. He will be dead by than. LOL. Keep your eyes on the road you idiot and not the camera . That's just asking for a car accident.

  • Oh dear, another closed minded linear thinker. Two degrees wasn't enough apparently

  • see, the 'soul' or the personality is a delicate thing, It's in essence the electrochemical process happening in your brain at any instance. It's like the RAM in a computer, it's entirely made up out of all the experiences that you have had throughout your life, and should the powersource ever fail, it's lost forever. The trick is, to somehow preserve that electrochemical process or transfere it peacemeal into a synthetic body.

  • your not really backing up your ideas with anything. you sound more like a Christian in denial than an intelligent person

  • Could you provide me with a link to that article?

I do wonder if you are aware of his achievements and of how accurate his past predictions turned out to be. And whether you have ever taken a look at his book "the singularity is near" or not.

In that book (which Bill Gates also seems to find interesting) he also refers to Aubrey the Grey, ever heard of him or watched one of his presentations?

Anyways, "defeating aging" is possible. Period.

When it will be doable, is debatable.

  • Anyway, I bet this guy is a christian.

  • haha this hillbilly shouldn't open his mouth at all, because whenever he does he just looks/sounds dumb. Maybe you should stick to making videos unrelated to science/technological progress because you honestly haven't got a clue mate. Kurzweil's predictions are accurate but may sound absurd to a layman. Maybe people should look into his research in technological trends and rate of progress (law of accelerating returns) before writing him off as a wackjob. This video has many false statements.

  • there is a public sector and a private sector. you are part of the public sector. he is a part of the private sector. you don't get to know or see what he gets to play with.

  • There is a species of jellyfish that has evolved "immortality", other creatures, that is perfect cellular reproduction without any degradation over time. That means it doesn't age. If you are so smart why don't you know of this. Is it such a strectch to think we could manipulate our genes in such a way to acheive this. It's already being done on smaller scales.

  • Well ,most common folk (like me) would be happy enough when there is a sure-fire way to get old without all the failings of our decaying bodies. I do not want to live forever, but 150 to 200 years in reasonable health would be nice , and actually could be realistic when gene-therapy and stem-cell research makes it's promises true..(notice I said "promises") But Immortality? Nah thnx..but no thnx.

  • How do you know that we'll not be able to understand our brains in the future?

You, who acts so scientific in your speech believes in "spirits" and "souls"?

You contradicting your own words. You classify immortality with Vampires while your own beliefs about "spirits" is just as BS.

  • He does not say that, Idiot. He contends that the brain will be effectively modeled by then. Why do you gibber jabber and not address actual points made by Kurzweil. Do you have an advanced degree in something not, sure what med. is.

The best part of you video is your stupid comment about Kanye West, because it shows what a random stupid fool you are, as you cannot even keep on topic.

    Sarah Palin for Prez.

  • Funny to see stupid people who think thay are smart.

  • your whole argument in the video is that you cant imagine it happening thats hardly an argument. mor eof an opinion based on feeling

  • Kurzweil is even more full of shit in 2010. He actually predicted, no joke, humans adding a year every year to their life expectancies BY NOW in his essay, "The Law of Accelerating Returns" ten years ago (read the whole thing, it's there!). He shifted the date to 2025 when that prediction didn't come to pass. I fully expect him to push back that date as well. I advise all transhumanists to completely put Kurzweil away and read some Mike Treder (IEET) instead.

  • You're not very convincing. There is nothing in ourselves that is not a construct of the universe. Natural selection has manipulated these atributes into beings, so why can't we, just as we have every new understanding of sciences.

    Vampires and zombies are real!!

  • You obviously don't have an MD and didn't retain much from your weak bachelor's in CIS . All the information needed to create any and all biological organisms are encoded in the genome. The genome literally has all the codes for life -- these are LINEAR codes of information that when sequenced correctly produce living organisms. The combination of exponentially increasing computing power and neurological/biological studies will undoubtedly unlock the road to the human/robotics merger.

  • Is so fun to see an ignorant person talking with this arrogance and conviction.

  • A large number of techniques I used in the first year of my biotech degree were obsolete by the time I started my final year. Personalised medicine and gene theraphy are already a reality. Deciphering the proteome is the next challange. I dont doubt ray for a minute.

  • People like you said 100 years ago that man cannot fly.... its just not possible.... LOL

Open up your mind... Even Time Travel has now been Proved...

  • @JibranSial People like you said 100 years ago that man cannot fly.... its just not possible.... LOL

Brillant ! quote lolllll nice jibran

  • You should watch the video miracles by icp you will probably be able to relat to it.

  • You should be more focused on driving and less focused on making videos about things you cant understand.

  • Funny how you seem to not want to say bullshit but boy did arsehole slip right out

  • to what article did you refer?!?!?

  • ...and this is why vlogging while driving will be illegal.

  • Would we even have to replace our brains or "improve" them i thought that the brain doesnt die from Ageing The heart should be the main focus then move onto other major organs

  • just seems like everything your saying misses the point. anyway he's a futurist, working on the basis of a great deal of research - might be extrapolating somewhat but there's a lot behind it. try watching some of his videos, i'm guessing the article you read wasn't very informative.

  • How would this guy know whether immortality is impossible or not. He hasn't made a single real argument, all he's done is voicing his opinion without giving any reasons for why he believes what he tinks.

Also he brought up the "soul" which disqualifies him from being taken seriously. We can't move our soul or our mind he says? Care to explain why that is?

Looked too deeply into the bible perhaps - old scripture only tastes if you take it with a lot of salt.

  • I could not watch jwb10600 for more than 30 seconds. you can tell right away that he's a goofball. Especially taping himself while driving. If you watched him talk you can only blame yourself.

  • This is the worst video on YouTube. Such ignorance about scientific progress. I'm glad he doesn't want to live forever.

  • Listening to you I felt like I was living forever.

  • He has to degrees...ok. So you've been brain washed into thinking inside TWICE!

Try thinking outside the box buddy. Your stuck in your box like your car. What original thought have you ever come up in your life? Or you even capable of creative thoughts? Or do you just spew out jargon u read in books.

  • ignorance is bliss mate...there is an immortal species of jellyfish now spreading across the world.....it does this be reversing the aging process backwards once its gets to a certain age :)

  • I'd Reather Live forever then be dead forever.

  • @Jacory069 thank you!!!!

  • @Jacory069

I completely agree with you. My greatest fear in life is my death. For me death is disapearing in an ocean of darkest to never come back, to go rotting under the earth, where the eternal cold and darkness resides.

    Always better alive then dead!!!

And this guy talking on this video is a fuk#ng troglodite cage man. Including the 4 people that gave this video thumbs up.

  • hey man, i see you driving a 90's suburban! lets bring back the 90s when we didnt know so much?

  • i agree with you, but i voted you down because of your niggery name.

  • He's not justifying any of his findings with magic. Have you read anything? Ray is smart enough to know filming a vlog while driving is unnecessary and reckless. You seem to mistake your not understanding something for evidence against it.

  • This video asserts that because we cannot accomplish it today, it is impossible in the future.

    Progress disagrees.

  • The speaker in this video does not understand Science

  • everyone on her is taking u very seriously but i know why u said the things you said. I wont mind living for 200-400 years never aging. I wish to explore the stars , understand god/soul/universie and know all. I wish to be god. But this might be possible. giving birth to Ai , nanotechnology and human brain reverse engineering is gonna happen. i am 20 so I will may be 60-70 years more... I wish to see this shit..but dont refute something unless u reaserch about it

  • @GuruShmuru2u great going..moron... its not maroon... LAME !!!

  • lol... hes ignorant... well, we will see!

    there is no soul!

  • The guy who made this video is a a retard and knows nothing about the technology he is trying to refute.

  • If you're going to refute something, at least try to be accurate, so you don't end up sounding so uninformed.

Ray never said "I believe that, in 20 years time, we will have reached the scientific point that will allow us to become immortal".

  • He's talked about "indefinite lifespan"... BIG DIFFERENCE. Second, according to him, the way for us alive today to stand a good chance of getting there is to start taking care of ourselves in the present, taking advantage of our current knowledge to slow down the aging process in order to reach a "bridge" where our technology and our understanding of said aging process/human body has advanced significantly, therefore allowing us to extend our lives further reaching a "second bridge" and so on.

  • The 20 year time frame is for what De Grey has termed Actuarial escape velocity, the point where more than a year is added to life expectancy yearly. Some may think that's a little too optimistic, nevertheless, this does not constitute "immortality".

This is all very logical is based on measurable trends from which predictions made years and even decades ago have held up quite well.

Perhaps you should read up on the subject a little more next time.

  • Wow, what an idiot! Do you have anything other than sarcasm and you're own personal ignorace as an argument? Just because you don't understand somthing doesn't make it untrue nor does it mean someone else cannont understand it. I'm glad you have your view, I don't think I'd want you around forever.

  • You say that it is impossible via technology, and then you come back saying that scientists have started developing artificial implantation/valves, etc to improve our health/longevity ... yet you fail to realize the exponential growth technology will experience over the next 20-50 years?

  • Your opinion is uninformed and inane. You're clearly not even bright enough to realize that driving a car whilst trying to sound smart for your camera looks exceedingly stupid (because it's dangerous, you d-bag!) Also, might it have occurred to you that you're posting your featherweight thinking via a technology that you clearly would have dismissed as "science fiction" 10-15 years ago? Your post has achieved an impressive level of irony - congratulations.

  • You dont sound very educated. Your definitely not very articulate. I think you should stick to discussing sex and TV shows like you do in your other videos, that seem so to be your area of expertise.

  • Comment removed

  • you're arguments are weak. Also, think that Kurzweil says AI will be at a human level in 20 years with brain uploading coming much later. Not so sure about his date myself, but your examples of yoda and harry potter certainly don't influence anyone. Furthermore, if we do defeat aging, it would allow you to live as long as you want. If you do get tired of life you can always end it. You say you don't want to live forever now but that is what everyone says, simply because it is out of reach.

  • Thinking is not what you are good at. Driving isn't either.

  • As a matter of fact you should just go back to your ranch, the cows are hungry...Forget about nanotechnology and Kurzweil, just feed your cows and stay off the internet-it was not mentioned in the Bible!

  • Why wait to die when you are sick and old, just kill yourself now while you are young so you don't have to go thorough the horror of getting old, weak and sick. Jump out of that car doin 80 and do everyone a favor! Don't wait till you get to 80!!!!

  • Dude, what are you doing reading a magazine about nanotechnology???Stick to the Bible please!!!

  • dude why are you worrying? you are not gonna make it to 2029 anyways, go on recording while you are driving...and making eye contact like it matters and don't watch the road..

and your arguments are worthless, why do you even talk about vampires and obivan???

  • "We don't have the technology to live forever right now, THEREFORE it is impossible. You can't replace our soul--we don't understand it now, how could we ever understand it in the future? BULLCRAP."

  • This video is worthless.

Spend your time listening to brilliant men such as Ray Kurzweil instead. He's the real deal.

  • Haha, this is a funny video--though I'm unsure of its intentionality. A total misrepresentation of the ideas purported by Kurzweil, which are substantiated by considerable evidence and explained in great detail if you took the time to pick up a book on the subject. Contrast this with your pedantic, straw-man attack and you've got some grade-A humor right here. On the other hand, I, surely and Dr. K, agree with you on your _considered_ refutation of science fiction stories becoming reality.

  • If you take the time to do so, you'll find that the claims of Kurzweil are rather shoddy and based on flawed data.

  • Alright, well considering I've read the Sing. is Near, criticisms of the book, responses to criticism, etc. and have yet to find a piece of data that was so fundamentally 'flawed' that Kurzweil's argument collapses on itself, why don't you post what you're referring to? And when you do that, I'll be happy to discuss it with you. At the moment, your undefended claim isn't competing very well.

  • Read these, they'll explain what I'm talking about far better than I can.

  • There have been optimistic predictions that have not yet occurred, but also negative ones. Some of my favourites.

In 1899, the U.S. Patent Office commissioner stated that everything that can be invented has been invented. In 1901, Wilbur Wright, said "man would not fly for 50 years"

In 1936, the New York Times claimed that a rocket will never leave the Earth's atmosphere. Heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible. Lord Kelvin, President, Royal Society 1895

    But there are many more

  • Thanks for the links--some compelling articles which allowed me to refine my own perspective on the matter. I didn't find the ones which applied a contrarian analysis to a graph already laden with qualifiers to be very convincing. I thought the most considered approaches attempted to redefine the terms which would enable a singularity-like event to occur, rather than engage in a festival of denial (like the author of this video).

  • Also, if you haven't read them already, I'd recommend Yudkowsky and one of his writings, "Artificial Intelligence and Global Risk."

  • ....however, i believe if the brain is replaced by electronics in a gradual way then the soul continues instead of ending and being replaced by another soul.

i'm hoping that in the future we will understand enough about biology that bionics will be completely unnecessary to achieve indefinate lifespans and healthspans. anyway i think that biological organisms can be thought of as robots with molecular sized machine parts.

  • in my opinion, the soul can never be moved but maybe it can be copied. however you can trick people into thinking it moved by killing the original person. i see it as similar to files on a computer; moving a file is actually just a copy and a deletion of the original file. the only person who will know that the soul transfer did not work would be the original person themselves. as long as that person is killed then nobody will know it didn't work.

  • Thirty years ago, "futurists" who took too many drugs like Robert Anton Wilson, F.M. Esfandiary and Timothy Leary predicted that we would have become "immortal" by now. I notice that these three aren't around any more.

  • I would agree with this observation. These men however were novelists, essayists and lack the scientific/academic rigor which would bring credibility to their predictions. Kurzweil however has a pretty impressive record on accuracy, his projects are funded by NASA, Google etc. These entities rarely do anything foolish. It is not surprising however that many people find these predictions too fantastic, based on their previous history.

  • Kurzweil is another one of them, except he's still with us.

  • another one, in that he takes drugs? It is easy to say someone is wrong. what is needed is to say why they are wrong. The fact that others make inaccurate predictions is of no consequence to Kurzweil's predictions.

  • Isn't Myers a Zoologist? What is mystical about it? My understanding is that Kurzweil endorses Aubrey DeGrey SENS proposals, which have not been disproved, despite many attempts. Once again, isn't it indefinite Lifespan not immortality that Kurzweil supports? You must be very gifted to not only understand the flaws in these theorys but the character flaws in those who support them>

  • I agree with Aubrey De Grey's SENS strategy, I just don't think it will take such a pathetic speck of time to become a reality.

In even his most optimistic estimates, De Grey gives those now living a 25-50 per cent chance of making it to "actuarial escape velocity" - the point where more than a year is added to the average human lifespan.

    Kurzweil is just spouting guff.

  • Without splitting hairs. I understood ADG's prediction to be a little more optimistic. I thought it was with 25-30 years there would be a 50/50 chance of longevity escape velocity. this timeframe appears consistant with RK's. The key point is that even before AEV is acheived, significant life extention will be available, enough to allow many now alive to be sustained until AEV is feasible. I see both are involved in the singularty university.

  • As PZ Myers said about Kurzweil, he (Ray) is a first rate bullshit artist who spouts techno-mystical crap, and I say nobody's buying it except the worst kind of self-loathing, pencil-necked geeks out there.

Immortality will take centuries - NOT decades - to solve. Ray is spewing outright, grade-A nonsense.

  • Your comments are obtuse. Kurzweil's accuracy in predictions is unmatched. How is your record on prediction?. Harry Potter, Vampire??. Who is talking about immortality? isn't the aim to acheive an indefinite lifespan, this isn't immortality. Our soul cannot be moved?? During your med degree, dis you see any souls?

  • I think you have a needlessly strong opinion on something you have absolutely no idea about, I mean 'bionic hands'... 'we don't know enough about the brain'... you have literally no clue what you're talking about.

  • Despite considering myself a transhumanist, I agree with your video. Ray is a kook and a crackpot, and is considered so by the scientific community.

  • what are your qualifications to speak on any of these topics?
