  • I get bored with FPS but this might actually work for me.

  • PWN news? loool

  • hope they make one for the photographers xD it would be cool

  • rlly nice game they should make some attention to it

  • if this was done with a larger budget and a bigger team (and if it was actually bieng releases) this would be the only modern "FPS" i'd ever buy

  • @Nemspy Which is why I'd love to see it done with a large budget and a high-quality team for the technical side of development; unfortunately it's also the reason that will never happen.

  • intresting concept. i wish a publisher had the balls to pick this game up and fund it properly; instead they choose to push out Call of Duty 27

  • pwn news is my local news.

  • This game will have a lot potential if it address some of the grey areas that are involve in war journalism. For example: If you caught some soldiers on the side of the 'good guys' committing atrocities, do you report it? Knowing that it is just an isolated incident, but it will have a massive impact on their public support?

Or will you intervene in the things that you should just be observing? For example putting down the camera and help a wounded person.

Really looking forward to see it

  • Nice application of a game as a training tool.

Could you incorporate role playing elements, such as having to establish and use contacts, for instance to find important witnesses or uncover information which shapes or informs your story?

  • Do the Americans shoot at you like in real life?

  • @MastermindX Ask José Couso.

  • @Nemspy The reason the gaming market is so homogenized is because major titles cost on average $10 million to make. Publishers are too scared to tread new waters because new IPs are harder to sell than sequels to already proven titles. That's why every major title coming out soon is a sequel: Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, Skyrim, Uncharted 3, Diablo 3, etc etc

  • I think the concept is really cool. It's original and very relevant in today's world. 'But I'd rather do the shooting!

  • This is a fantastic concept and really deserves to be made into a full game. Little concerned about how you'll address scoring and positive reinforcement though.

    "War-weary orphan 2X COMBO!" and

    "Explosions!" and

"Mass grave +1000 Bonus!" might make it just a little bit fetishistic.

But hey, if you can make it work, ultimate Pokemon Snap kudos to you.

  • Send in your footage, then watch in horror as your editor cuts it to suit the studio's agenda!

  • i cant wait to play the mode online (:

  • This might offer something pretty unique. I'd love to play it.

  • Good concept but it needs lots of work. It should like combine mgs and heavy rain lol. Maybe if it was in 3rd person it could be better.

  • Not everyone has millions of dollars to spend on the development of highly graphics people.

  • It doesn't 'look' that good, but it must 'feel' good to play it. Though, it's a war game and all that. I keep thinking the camera is a stripped sniper rifle without ammo, just a scope.

  • Article 79 of Protocol I of the 1977 Geneva Convention says journalists will only be offered the rights of civilians - ie. not being taken prisoner - "provided that they take no action adversely affecting their status as civilians" - for example by carrying guns. Also, in a real world scenario, if journos were commonly seen to be carrying guns, even un-armed journos could eventually begin to be seen as combatants and be targeted which would endanger all of them, and the free flow of information

  • Graphics aren't everything .. this looks to have the ingredient that is lacking in so many modern games - a unique and compelling storyline

  • @clearair - totally agree with you. this has a much more interesting idea than simply run-n-gun, which is so desensitizing.

  • 360 no viewfinder!

  • @JanusCC Nice one....I get it

  • PWN News? Cool News Story Bro

  • I like this idea :)

Bet the COD fanboys are probably complaining about this game as we speak.

  • I wonder if you'll use the same camera throughout the game or have to upgrade or choose the right camera for the job, for instance you could start off with a handicam or flip cam, though as you progress in the game you'll get access to Pro Camcorders which shoot excellent quality video on Auto settings but bulky and can slow you down, or DSLR camera's which are light and easy to carry, shoot excellent manual footage but hard to use for amateurs and take a while to set up shot.

    Thoughts?

  • @dctcool - i agree with you, dctcool. i am not a video game player, but i am a professional camera operator and i have used all sorts of cameras. you are very right to point out that progression in the game and upgrades would have advantages and disadvantages, regarding the scenarios and environments. I have never liked the FPS games, but the premise to this game is much more unique and interesting. I am eager to see more of this game. cheers!

  • PWN news FTW!

  • disable frame blend in your video editor

  • Actually, I like the concept of this game a lot. I'd rather my son spend at least some time playing an action oriented game wherein he's not involved in the, um, pixellation of the enemy.

I wonder what Kimberly Dozier will think of this game?

  • lol pwn news

  • I know the exact model of the camera in use. It's a Sony PMW-EX1.

  • I really hope the opportunity exists to cover-up a whole lot of collateral damage :D

  • Cambien los graficos y los movimientos roboticos.

  • @learber If you "had a gun for backup" it would defeat the purpose of what the game is trying to do. Embedded journalist don't go in with guns.

  • @Nemspy welll then how about a armed escort? that can die ..

  • Comment removed

  • @Nemspy @Nemspy Some do. And some who don't have picked up weaponry from casualties and proceeded to defend both themselves and others. Check with Michael Yon if you doubt it.

However, your assertation that carrying a weapon would defeat the purpose of this game is absolutely true.

  • @KayakMike1963 Yes, but I think we're clearly talking about the exceptions here and we've drifted from the real point that arming the cameraman in this scenario would be completely counter to what the game is trying to do.

  • @Nemspy I agree.... the game would be totally invalidated were the player armed. I just wanted people to be aware that journalists have indeed armed themselves on rare occasions. I know for a fact that I would!

  • @KayakMike1963 lol you guys are saying the same thing!

  • Looks great, will be like watching a movie but chosing the scenes by yourself

  • This game reminds me Suda51's Michigan - Report from Hell.

    I aprove!

  • the graphics remind me of ocarina of time

  • I love when they have such a unique idea that would be fun put into a large console game, like portal. Sadly there aren't enough games like this

  • Sadly the big budgets are spent on generic military FPSes instead of intelligent and compelling game such as this.

  • Looks like fun.

  • the idea looks very cool, ithey should also add missions in wich you make interviews to refugee and soldiers, not only witnessing combats

  • Wow, great idea! Looking forward to it.

  • @zwei2mann People asking for help is something that probably happens in real wars.

  • The game isn't even anywhere near close to being finished and already it's caused controversy with some BBC journalist named Nick Bryant who called it "War Porn"

Google search ""New game sends 'dangerous message' to journos""

Funny enough it was actually because of this story that I found out about the game and I am really impressed by it I will be following it with great anticipation. best of luck to the team.

  • So basically you take a camera and watch bots play counter-strike? Interesting ...

  • una idea muy interesante, enhorabuena a los creadores y mucha suerte para seguir el proyecto adelante, animo¡¡¡

  • Looks very interesting! kinda reminds me of pokemon snaps, where you would take pictures of key moments and get a score based on a few criteria like position, size, etc... really looking forward to this. Looks like Console footage, choppy movement from the player. any chance to see this on PC? good luck!

  • Screw that.

  • I've covered wars, you know.

  • quickscoping with a camera lol

  • I bet this game is going to give you a gun at one point

  • great concept, but the graphic is just meh

Use a better engine, then it'll be hit

  • when's this coming out>?

  • Animation's a bit rough but the concept is very interesting.

  • Interesting

  • @Paplaete

Watership Down, Plague Dogs, (nearly) every comic book ever made about ww1 or 2 and most comics made about war in general have "bad" graphics.

Story captures the horror of war. An exquisite corpse does nothing except shock and titillate for a few moments and then we go on with our life. It's why pics of starving Africans don't accomplish much to fix that problem.

I'm not saying this game has great art direction, but that would would help more than "good" graphics in my opinion.

  • This reminds me slightly of One Must Fall 2097, where a news reporter would talk about the 1v1 robot fighting match you were just in, with important snapshots of the actual match scattered in to the little picture-in-picture screen while she talked..

  • WE NEED A NEW GENRE FOR THIS! I'LL CALL IT THE FPCG! ( First Person Camera Game )

  • now that's something innovative looks good lets see how it turns is the game out yet?

  • B B B BLOODY SCREEN SO REAL!!!!!

  • i bet there's gonna be a sick montage for this. who knows there might be a 720 scope recording shot videoclip

  • I'd say graphics don't matter in a game, but with something like this, graphics and atmosphere are KEY. I think someone on reddit elaborated on this a bit, but basically you cannot capture the horror of war when the war doesn't even look like...well, war!

Apart from the graphics though, this looks like a REALLY good concept, and I hope they're able to fully develop the game. We really need something like this!

  • That actually looks.... fun.

  • well....that was...ehm, innteresting?

  • Yaaaay! who dosn't want to play a game where you run around with a camera and film war!

  • @swaaahtome

i would... there are idiots playing minecraft right? and this actually look good for a change.

  • @CallofDutyDoctor i am sure that minecraft is harder for idiots than call of duty

  • It is awkward when your camera runs low on battery power and you have to kill a correspondent from a rival news agency to get "ammo"

  • want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play, want to play,

  • Do want!

  • I've covered wars, y'know.

  • Wow. The best. most fluid animations in a game ever! *sarcasm*

  • I wonder if with this game, by editing the footage in the right way, you can make news stories which would be the delight of Fox News or Right Wing oriented news depots, where rebels are the mean evil guys who are trigger happy with the heroic occupation forces.

  • I didn't mean to diss on Modern Warfare, its just their engine isn't advertised alongside the gameplay as much as BF3's is. What's it called anyway? Mango? Orco? Charmander?

  • @swaaahtome The best level in the original Call of Duty never gave you a weapon

  • @swaaahtome The best level in the original Call of Duty never gave you a weapon

  • This is a great idea, although it begs to be used on Bohema Interactive's ARMA2 engine.

  • PWN News? Lolololol I wonder if they're better than NOOB Broadcasting?

  • Needs a mouse smoothing filter... looks kinda jittery

  • I wonder if you will film US soldiers beating and torturing the captives at some moment of the game, or just "aggression" of the enemy soldiers.

  • sooo, can you buy it or download it?

  • why would u even want to film this?

  • Modern Pokemon Snap, anybody?

  • They should like make a Darwin Awards for Videogames, I would totally vote on this then :) :)

  • I have a game on mobile in which I take pictures of fishes and it seems more interesting then this.

  • So you mean .. I can't kill? Its about running and dodging? Can I at least throw the camera at the bad guy or stick a tripod in their fanatical believes or something? Or maybe I can fall down on them and knock them unconscious? Mario Bros had it like since 1985...

  • personally i have a bigger problem with the physics then the graphics, 0:43 they look like toy soldiers running. thats gunna take away the experience more then the graphics.

  • PWN news.

  • This is very interesting.. could see myself playing this. Hoping they improve the graphics

  • @fiddynuma1 Herp derp, that's why this is a CONCEPT, not a finished product.

EG: it's not showing you a game, it's showing you an idea.

  • The graphics are a little rough around the edges, but its not like the game is going to ship tomorrow guys. I'd like to see it polished, and at the end of the day, not have the same old "War is bad" moral shoved down your throat at the end...again. If both sides are flawed, both have positives and negatives, it makes it a real experience.

And of course, good graphics don't make a good game.

  • i think if they wanted to portray it more accurately, it would have to be way more violent and gruesome. like, show how war really is.

  • Looks interesting, but I dunno...

Imagine this concept used in BF3. Then I would buy it on day one!

  • Looks interesting, I would buy it :)

  • This looks way more brutal than most FPS games. I mean, just waiting to film these dudes dying, without trying to suppress the enemy?

  • interesting idea, curious on how it will play out

  • ULTIMATE POKEMON SNAP

  • @UTcheeseburger oh! Come on! this is in the war LOL!

  • I would honestly buy this

  • Great idea, but it'll need a SEXY GAME ENGINE.

  • This game needs to happen. So what if it's boring, it's the closest to reality an FPS is ever going to get

  • I could see ways they could make this better.

  • Looks extremely boring. It seems I'd be filming the game as it plays itself. Interesting idea, but I don't see this being pulled off well.

  • Pokemon snap?

  • this looks exciting for about a minute and then incredibly boring

  • Someone made the game I envisioned for a few years... damned.

  • It's COD meets Pokemon Snap! How can this game not be a hit?! "Your shot was super effective."

  • I'd buy this game

  • It's sadly a very bad concept if this was basically the only thing you do, although having it where your camera is a tool instead of the main focus of the game may be good. To pull this off it would require a VERY unique story line and some VERY stunning visuals to go along with it.

  • I'd like to see some better graphics and maybe reacting to what happends around you (camera shake when in nearby explosions for example).

Just add a good story and this could be a huge hit.

  • I think its a good concept.. and interesting. But will it sell..?? I'm not sure.

Pokemon snap was wonderful and all, just saying, .. but when you finish taking pictures.. then what? [honestly i got bored] How can this game make me want to re start it and will it give me a different outcome?

  • pokemon snap and fatal frame does the camera jig better

  • well, the game is being developed on UDK so it has a lot of room for improvement

  • well, the game is being developed on UDK so it has a lot of room for improvement

  • I love the idea for this game, but how would you make it replayable?

Do you have a facebook page to follow?

  • This game looks horrible but it's a good concept. If the game uses the Frostbite 2 engine then I think it would be good.

  • Very refreshing concept for the genre. Indeed, some more out-of-combat role-playing elements could make the game very interesting.

  • Very refreshing concept for the genre. Indeed, some more out-of-combat role-playing elements could make the game very interesting.

  • Looks good!

  • The News name kinda ruins it

  • @CombineHgrunt Nope.

  • @ImmediateGaming opinions, opinions.

  • @CombineHgrunt My opinion is the only one that matters.

  • @ImmediateGaming /watch?v=gvdf5n-zI14

  • @CombineHgrunt This game is #1 and my opinion is the best

  • @CombineHgrunt better than CoD

  • @ImmediateGaming It is a quite easy thing to make a game better than CoD hur..

  • @CombineHgrunt No. CoD is the best.

  • @ImmediateGaming /watch?v=wXw6znXPfy4

  • @CombineHgrunt CoD and halo are the best games ever

  • @CombineHgrunt Nothing beats CoD.

  • @Roychesraphim1 I agree completely. it's a fascinating premise for a game, and one that if executed well could become an absolute smash hit. It's great that this game is going in such a new and exciting direction, though a shame that its seemingly so handicapped in resources such as graphics and animations.

  • Where's the button to spin this and tell the viewers that it's all obama's fault?

  • He has covered wars, y'know.

  • Very, very, very interesting.

But please, focus more on the animations. It's important.

  • SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY

  • Interesting premise, but with movies like Restrepo to fill that void, I see no need for this sort of game. I can understand the desire to find more immersion through this medium. However, I can simply immerse myself in any regular movie on DVD for cheaper. But that's just me, personally.

  • IF the graphics improve DRAMATICALLY, you have an open environment like a previous commentor stated it would actually be fun...

I would also suggest having point values - both for how good your footage is (like ratings for explosions, more important moments...etc). Also use different images to unlock access to new areas i.e. slant your coverage to the guerillas u get more access to them, to the loyalists get more access to them; instill public outcry changes the way battles go and so on.

  • Good idea on paper, but it wont work

  • I'm gonna stand in a corner and film the wall

  • Multiplayer anyone? <3

  • I see this and think Pokemon Snap 64

  • "Careful, they've got RPGs!"

    "FAAAANTAAAASTIC!"

  • first person pacifist

  • Looks like a fantastic idea! An Idea: Give the player freedom. Let them choose from a number of different unstable areas of the world, and then within those areas, make the game environment huge, with many battle and protests going on in real time. Don’t take them to it in a mission-type format. Give them updates, like “Tensions rising in [COUNTRY]“, or “Protests break out in [COUNTRY]“. Giving the player the freedom, and burden, of finding the news will make it more satisfying when they do!

  • damn this is a really good idea considering how scripted most singleplayer FPS games are nowadays. you are already a spectator most of the time while the action plays out before you, why not arm the player with the camera instead of a gun and pretending like he has any affect on the outcome of the story?

  • I've always thought that war games don't really introduce the issues of war. This might be different.

  • I've covered wars, you know.

  • I want to play as Frank West; he's covered wars, y'know.

  • @squirtsquad88

this isn't even an alpha. ever heard of placeholders?

  • Fuck yeah Pokemon Snap 2011

  • @neodavie Is it terrible I thought exactly the same thing?

  • REALLY GOOD IDEA but the graphics must be better

  • An old friend of mine - the team leader of the Insurgency mod (Mod DB Mod of the Year 2007) - is going to be pissed about this, lol :(. As a former Canadian Army soldier and photojournalist, he contacted me around a year ago about making this exact game concept. I never would have thought there'd be someone else actually interested in developing such an original idea.

  • Hmm...let's see how this pans out.

    (pardon the pun)
