The honest DOC workers have acknowledged publicly that 1080 kills some native birds when aerially dropped, as well as farm animals when dropped in the wrong places, as well as valued game animals. What a disgusting way to spread poison throughout our forests, but hey, it's the cheapest option we are told - the biggest bang for the buck.
Dude, every other viable pest control method also kills native birds. The massive amount of carnage caused to our kiwi populations from possum traps is a dreadful legacy of the possum fur industry. Other things that kill native birds include motor vehicles, cats, dogs rats, stoats, ferrets, weasels and possums. Biodegradable 1080 certainly delivers rapid knock down of predators and it is one of the few things keeping our birds and bats and their habitats going.
@bushtracker1 Your valued game animals are introduced pests that are destroying our forest. Few of the bush’s 300–400 plant species can resist the combined attacks of deer, goats and pigs. Their continual browsing opens up the forest canopy, which causes the undergrowth to thin and makes the bush more vulnerable to wind and invading weeds. Because pests prefer to eat certain species, their browsing disrupts and redirects forest regeneration and succession. Valued to whom?
@davelabello jesus! think about what the moa ate!!!!!!!!!!!! the nz bush is the most overgrown its ever been with no moa and low deer numbers the nz bush has turned into an unnatural jungle, the nz bush 2000 years ago was heavily browersd by the moa and all u greenes think a few deer are killing it! go see for it urself
The numbers of short-tail bats in the Eglinton Valley have been increasing since the use of 1080 started in 2000. Biodegradable 1080 has been used in both aerial and ground operations in the Eglinton to protect bats from predators. It was applied in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2010.
As I said it's 170 baits per hectare and it is pretty consistent. Anti-1080 activists constantly overstate the harm to birds. The reality is that we are maintaining good populations of species such as mohua, kakariki and bats in places where we control predators using 1080 and the monitoring shows this is true. Isn't it logical that if you remove the predators that would otherwise kill females on the nest during a breeding season that you prevent a net loss?
Those figures are quoted from Landcare research and DOC's very own web sites and published Info avaliable on the internet trakabat.
2 possums per hectare and enough 1080 to kill 800 per hectare.
DOC and Landcare and F&B and AHB websites must be wrong again, never trust any of these agencys as they dont mind where 1080 lands anyway, killing Horses , dogs, cats, pets, farm animals etc etc.
Massive tonnages of native invertebrates, native seeds, and 26-million native birds are destroyed by predators and pests every year. The amount of secondary poisoning that occurs is tiny compared to the gains that are made every three to five years by stopping the predators from killing females on the nests or from eating invertebrates and seeds.
@TrakaBat How Great is DOC when members of the TUHOE Iwi are proudly protesting and trying to stop loads of 1080 being spread across the Ureweras, their ancestral home for hundreds of years before it was stolen from them by the NZ Govt.
They dont want DOC poisoning their heritage, their land, their property and their homes.
Sooner DOC stops delivering 1080 to all of Rural NZ sooner Rural NZ will have some respect for DOC.
@tutekelahore I do work for DOC as my channel information states. I live on the West Coast and I frequent 1080 operational areas on a regular basis. I am also the designer of a new type of bat detector.
Amazing how 1080 is designed to kill mammals but selectively it does not kill New Zealand Bats, now come pull my other leg trakabat as 1080 has been used to control Bats in South America..
I fail to see why you continue to lie about the negative effects of 1080 on NZ native wildlife.
Your post and videos are full of hypocrisy, easily spotted fundimental flaws abound in your desire to show 1080 poison in good light.
Cheers for the laugh, I nearly coughed coffee all over my computer !
@TrakaBat aerial broadcast 1080 poison targets everything, how can only targeted species consume this poison when it is scattered all over the land and in water supplys ?
Seriously trakabat have you ever been to an areial 1080 Toxic Poison Drop because you are talking utter nonsence now. Its like throwing money out your car window down a main street in town and only expecting 13yr old girls to pick it up.
@tutekelahore over the past ten years I have been into many 1080 operational areas both before and after drops. I have found that anti-1080 activists have exaggerated their claims of harm and in some cases they have even fabricated claims.
In 1992, M Meads completed a study for DoC that showed approximately 50% mortality among forest invertebrates from a single aerial 1080 “treatment”. DoC refused to allow the resulting paper to be published. At the same time they commissioned a similar study, which structurally had no chance of detecting the high mortality seen in the Meads study.
@tutekelahore myths about the Mike Meads trials on invertebrates never explain what actually happened. When baits did not land near his insect traps Meads moved them. This had the same effect as placing ten-times more baits on the ground than were distributed in the operation. Subsequent more scientific trials showed negligible impacts on invertebrates from 1080. Baits occupy only a tiny fraction of the vast invertebrate habitat space in any forest ecosystem.
@TrakaBat Dr Meads was an eminent and famous scientist in New Zealand .Mike Meads was no ordinary scientist, He was regarded as an authority on some of New Zealand's rarer invertebrates, including the threatened giant wetas, published more than 100 papers in many New Zealand and overseas journals and delivered papers to international conferences in Australia, UK and USA.
What are your scientific qualifications please ???
@TrakaBat Why when Landcare Research scientists state in their publications that there are only 2 possums per Ha of native bush does DOC apply enough 1080 to kill 800 possums per ha ???
DOC is finishing off what remains of the NZ native ecosystem , a job that began with the European invasion of Aotearoa, the cutting down of forests and introduction of Pests.
1080 kills everything that eats it, including precious native animals.
@tutekelahore, there are more than two possums per hectare when we do an operation to protect the environment and wildlife. We aren't talking about a hectare either; we are talking about 20,000 hectares. Your figure of 800 is wrong, it is 170 baits scattered per hectare which gets the rats and stoats as well as the possums.
DoC claims that bats are unaffected by aerial 1080. However, a competent 2002 study by Lloyd and McQueen showed that bats were clearly poisoned. The study gave a “best estimate” that 14% of bats would be killed in 14 foraging flights in a 1080-poisoned area.
@tutekelahore maybe you should have read the research that you quoted because Lloyd/McQueen actually monitored 269 bats and didn't confirm any poisoning. The figure you are quoting is just their risk uncertainty estimates saying that maybe 14.4% are at risk.
@TrakaBat I have used DOCs own published propoganda regarding this, are you now telling me That the NZ Department of Conservations own published Science is wrong ???
@tutekelahore like I said maybe you should have read the research that you quoted because Lloyd/McQueen actually monitored 269 bats and didn't confirm any poisoning. The figure you are quoting is just their risk uncertainty estimates saying that maybe 14.4% are at risk.
Gosh why is nothing said about the untargeted species, pets, hunting dogs and farm animals cruely poisoned by 1080 ?
Why dont DOC, The AHB and Forest and Bird tell the truth about that.
What about all the dead animals left to die and rot in the Rivers, Streams and even in peoples water supplys creating Bacteria and leaching poison ???
Not very honest with the truth are DOC and Company !!!
@TrakaBat The biggest threat to wildlife in NZ is DOC, Forest and Bird and their employees / members who one only sees in the bush during the warmer months, the rest of the time they are only to be found warming their toes by their heat pumps sipping hot chocolate whilst DOCs contractors spread 1080 all over our precious rural New Zealand.
@tutekelahore No one is complaining about saving native wildlife , they are anti the method. 1080 is not the Silver Bullet to pest control as is evidenced by years of 1080ing.
Tutekelahore, 1080 is a very useful tool to protect bats from rats, stoats and possums. There is absolutely no method that can eliminate these predators, but we can suppress predator numbers down to acceptable levels at crucial times using 1080. Why wouldn't we do that?
Caboose, you are wrong. There is plenty of research and plenty of evidence about the value of 1080 for protecting NZ wildlife and plants from introduced pests and predators. Your post was abusive and has been removed. If you are abusive again on my site you will be blocked.

Thanks for sharing that, imageandlikeness, but sadly you are again off the mark. 1080 poison has achieved very good results over 50-years. The Otira forest is one example. Check out my other videos like: "1080 Poison Ground Zero".
DOC are liars and now they employ 16 spin doctors in the NZ Government to spread their lies and propoganda re 1080. Of course the fellow in this vidio is biased in his representation of 1080, he was PAID to say this !!!
There was a good rodent and possum kill during the AHB operation, they wont need to repeat that for possums for quite a while. Rodent numbers depend on the availability of forest seed, and there was a bumper seed production after the AHB operation and the rodents have responded to this.
Of course the drop is going ahead, imageandlikeness, nothing you said in this post amounts to any reason why DOC would not do it's best to save the bats, birds and invertabrates from rodents in the Oparara. Biodegradable 1080 is a very good tool to use for this task.

How many Native Birds, Bats and the invertebrate food source are killed by 1080 poisoning ???
How much secondary poisoning occurs to Moreporks and Hawks etc from eating dying or dead food sources ???
How many birds die from drinking poisoned water in the tree tops ???
It appears clear to me that 1080 Kills wildlife as well as targeted species, can you please explain the above ???.
