Ahaha, oh Peter :') Loved him in All Creatures Great and Small, so decided to do some investigating into whether it were worth watching him as the Doctor as well - I've never seen any before Eccleston, as it disappeared shortly before I was born. I definitely will :)
I see glimpses of a GREAT Dr in Peter Davison, especially in CAVES OF ANDROZANI. What hurt his Dr so much was the confused, befuddled, hit-and-miss script selection and production of the JNT era.
I say precisely the same about the C.Baker and McCoy Dr's. Potentially GREAT Dr's both, held back by lousy writing, and poor production.
It just seems DW went slowly downhill after HORROR OF FANG ROCK.
What can I say to a person who says "Oh, he wasn't that good. Peter Davison just said the lines. He hardly gave the Fifth Doctor any character or personality".
@ClassicTVandFilmFan well I would go for "Fuck you!" but you probably want something with more evidence :D
Though, you could always go for at least he cared enough about the character to return to it...and he had a career outside of doctor who, unlike his overrated predecessor *cough*
@ClassicTVandFilmFan The Fifth had a personality, he was the most human of all the Doctor's, probably rivaled by the Eighth and the Tenth. Plus the Fifth's era was the "Back to Basic's" meaning they cut down the humor and went more science way.
In my estimation, two actors called Peter Davison played the Doctor - the one who appeared in Logopolis part four to Planet of Fire part four - followed by the infinitely more assured and empowered performer who appeared in The Caves of Androzani - surely one of the greatest portrayals ever of the Doctor Who character. It would have been interesting if Peter Davison could have continued in this vein - instead, we got Colin Baker, hamming and mugging his way through the part.
@randomdave30 I think you've nailed it. If Peter had more scripts like Caves which played to his strengths, not only would his era have been better, but he probably would've stuck around longer (Time Flight/Season 20 pretty much convinced him to leave, Caves made him regret leaving but too late), which probably would've maintained the show's ratings. I think Colin could have been good, but like Peter he got rotten scripts and a misconcieved character who had to be written *against* type to work.
I love the 5th doctor, and I like how his voice got high when he yelled he was so cute. I'm pretty sure he's my favorite, sometimes I think he's tied with David (10th) but so far he's winning.
So THAT'S Peter Davidson. I thought I recognized this dude's voice on a Bollywood movie promo, "Coxwell and Gerard" or something and someone told me that was him. I don't know about "adorable" but he seems cool.
Upon first viewing, I thought it was marvellous. Good Editing, great selections of clips, just well done. But the song choice I wasn't so pleased with as it was a tad bit odd. Oh But that Damn song, it's one of those ones that leach onto your mind and consistently plays over and over until you absolutely can't live without listening to it again. (Sort of like Davison, you eventually just have to love it.) Also Like him as Tristan Farnon.
Davison was good, it had become a bit of a cliche to always play the Doc as the eccentric over the top madman all the time ehich has become a little passe now its been done so much but Davison gave it some stability and understatement, and really he was the last doctor to be allowed to do his thing without the constant interruption of fuckwit Tv execs or corrupt executive producers, unadulterated Doc Who sort of finished in 1984 as far as I'm concerned.
After this weekend, I can proudly say that I have actually met Peter Davison! At this year's Gallifrey One! A very sweet decent man. Not only him, but also the actors who played Tegan, Nyssa, and Adric, plus Benton and K-9 (I know the actors' names, but limited character space). If you don't believe me, I have signed objects, including a photo with me (there was a pro-photo studio at the convention).
@harrietamidala1691 i belive you, you're lucky i live in australia and i have 1 pecrentage chance of eve rmeeting the old actors of dr who since they're older then me, plus i like them better
Its hard to describe him but he was lost and nice and young and vulnerable but totally a great actor and Caves of Androzani was just like his finest hour
Gotta love Five! He's like the Liz Shaw of Doctors, though- people seem to just forget about him... which is sad, because he had some of the most fun and interesting episodes, and one of the best TARDIS crews ever!
I think Peter did well, but I don't get him. When he talks, I feel that I don't connect to his character. He needed better stories and dialogue for sure. He always talked seriously, apart from in Castrovalva, whereas Matt and Tom always talk lunacy and madness.
He was still good, don't think I'm misjudging his abilities
@powerhousechipmunk23 Davison only really shone when he had a good script- an Enlightenment, Frontios or Caves of Androzani. Most of the time though I think JNT really straight jacketed and neutered his character and personality to try too hard to be 'different' to Tom Baker, and generally the JNT era was where all life, soul and spirit was sucked out of the show.
hes vulnerable but charming and witty and unsure at times but hard to explain, hes my favourite he always puts in 100%. in the Caves of Androzani i rooted for him the whole time kicking arse in that ep with his best performance. top 5th dr eps:
someone please answer. during thedavison years (especially in Earthshock), there was a (hard to describe) little quiet slowed down and higher pitch jingle resembling the theme that player sometimes when the doctor realised something( in Earthshock, when he is on the tardis, something about the Cyber-bomb). My attempt at typing it Der - der - der - der - da -derrrrrr.
Pretty random post, but has anyone heared it (I can't be alone) and has anyone got the file (recording).
I grew up watching Doctor Who, the 1980s was a new blossom of technology and change in the United States of America--and our viewpoint changed. Global communication satellites was in place and growing, personal computers appeared in homes & schools, telephone was in a rapid change as the monopoly was broken, video recorders & players changed the movie market, movie channels appeared with cable & satellite broadcasting. I believe Doctor Who was due for a makeover, as perception had changed.
Wonderful! The whole cricket sequence was a hoot! I enjoyed Davidson's Doctor and I think you've captured a lot of his style with this. He had some great expressions.
so guard me down those rules of life when he wrote those ten commandments masterpiece music in short terms-wonder if matt smith'll have the same song.
funny, my little brother told me years before he saw Tristan Farnam as the Doctor and I never believed him.... I do not know if he saw this on a Dutch or in the German TV, but he saw it. ;0)
It was fantastic! Clearly one of the best serials of all time! I think it's the only serial that uses frame fades (like a movie). The regeneration scene made me cry--not even Peri's cleavage distracted me (then again, I'm a girl).
Completely agree with you: In fact, here is my ranking of my top three doctors (which is really a three-way tie for the top spot divided in 3):
1. David Tennant
2. Peter Davison
3. Tom Baker
Tom Baker may be the most famous Doctor of them all (and I do like him) but I was won over by Peter Davison, and David Tennant is on top because he combines qualities from both 4 and 5. Peter Davison is my favorite classic doctor.
Yeah, but don't forget how annoying DT's Doctor could be. I mean, Peter and Tom could get annoying from time to time, in their own respective ways, but David's constant chatter and running about is enough to give some people a headache X.x
I still like him, of course, but.. he needed some Ritalin.
@sparklegrl0713 Not to forget that where all the Doctors accepted the end of their lifes more or less honourably (with 2 as the exception, as the timelords forced him) the 10th went more or less kicking and screaming, holding back his regeneration long enough to see his friends and as a result nearly destroying the TARDIS with the blast of energy during the process. I know it was all done to be an emotional moment but I lose a lot of respect for him in his final moments
@Galddedon which they shouldn't cause IMHO he's brilliant. He's still not knocking 7 off of my own top spot but he's my favorite of the revived series so far.
Ah babelcolour, a relevant update, after a fairly successful college induction day I treated my self to the beginning boxset (containing an unearthly child, 100,000 years bc and the first ever dalek serial and the edge of destruction) the dalek invasion of earth, (y'know the one where Susan leaves) and crutially the 5 doctors for a grand total of £31 from hmv, just finished them all and I can thoroughly recommend them
I thought it was brilliant--it's probably one of the best debut stories for Doctor Who ever. It showed an ill Doctor, which Peter Davison plays very well--he's always great at conveying pain (like Resurrection of the Daleks, the scene where his memory is being scanned--it makes me cry). That's the only clip I've seen of that serial, but I can't wait to watch it. I finished Time-Flight this morning, so it's season 20 next. I can't wait for the Five Doctors.
Peter Davison--The Original Hot Young Doctor! Paving the way for Paul McGann, David Tennant, and Matt Smith (who now takes the crown for being the youngest doctor).
Ah. My favourite Doctor. I think Tennant got alot of inspiration from Peter Davison. I think Davison is an amzing actor, and was alot like the new series Doctors. Fantastic Stuff. He acts his 2 little hearts out in "Caves Of Androzani"
Probably my favourite other than Matt Smith. It's like Tennant said:
"Cos you know what, Doctor? You were MY Doctor."

htilor 2 years ago
Some people say that lifes a game, well if this is so
I'd like to know the rules on which this game of life is based.
I know of no game more fitting than the age old game of cricket
It has honour, it has character and it's British.
Now God laid down the rules of life when he wrote those Ten Commandments
And to cricket those ten same rules shall apply.
Show compassion and self-righteousness and be honest above all
And come to God's call with bat and ball.
TheHappyBookwyrm 2 years ago
Now the Devil has a player and he's called the Demon Bowler,
He's shrewd, he's rude and he's wicked.
He is sent by Sinful Satan and he's out to take your wicket
And you know that that's not cricket.
He'll baffle you with googlies with leg breaks and offspin
But keep a level head and don't let that demon in.
TheHappyBookwyrm 2 years ago
So keep a straight bat at all times, let the Bible be your guide
And you'll get by, yes you'll get by.
All through your life he'll try to bowl you out
Beware the Demon bowler.
He's crafty and deceitful and he'll try to L.B.W.,
And bowl a maiden over.
The Devil takes the weak in spirit and so we must always be courageous
And remember that God is on your side.
So keep old Satan in your sights and play the straight and narrow line
And you'll get by, yes you'll get by.

I don't know why, but the very first clip has me thinking how HOT the Doctor can be! :)

@SFAfan01 Maybe it's because of that red robe...

Ah i love the 5th Doctor, but would you just look at those teeth! He could chew through steel with those things!

This is it--tonight I'm going to watch caves of androzani. My eyes are starting to tear up just thinking about it.
harrietamidala1691 2 years ago 4
You can watch it instantly on Netflix if you have membership. Enjoy!

Again, how'd you like it ?
zufgh 2 years ago
It was fantastic! Clearly one of the best serials of all time! I think it's the only serial that uses frame fades (like a movie). The regeneration scene made me cry--not even Peri's cleavage distracted me (then again, I'm a girl).
harrietamidala1691 2 years ago 4
Yes, it was. Wasn't i.
zufgh 2 years ago
Well, I learned to ignored it. I meant to say that not even Peri's distracting cleavage prevented me from crying at the scene.

Totally underrated Doctor. Granted, following Baker was going to be rough for anyone.
DVROFFMAN 2 years ago 63
Completely agree with you: In fact, here is my ranking of my top three doctors (which is really a three-way tie for the top spot divided in 3):
1. David Tennant
2. Peter Davison
3. Tom Baker
Tom Baker may be the most famous Doctor of them all (and I do like him) but I was won over by Peter Davison, and David Tennant is on top because he combines qualities from both 4 and 5. Peter Davison is my favorite classic doctor.
harrietamidala1691 2 years ago 7
Yeah, but don't forget how annoying DT's Doctor could be. I mean, Peter and Tom could get annoying from time to time, in their own respective ways, but David's constant chatter and running about is enough to give some people a headache X.x
I still like him, of course, but.. he needed some Ritalin.
sparklegrl0713 2 years ago 25
@sparklegrl0713
Yeah, and Toms Doctor had sort of a short fuse for even the smallest amounts of ignorance :) He's still awesome none the less!
Cocarat206 1 year ago
@sparklegrl0713 I think that's part of his character and his charm.
broadwaymbw 1 year ago
@sparklegrl0713 Not to forget that where all the Doctors accepted the end of their lifes more or less honourably (with 2 as the exception, as the timelords forced him) the 10th went more or less kicking and screaming, holding back his regeneration long enough to see his friends and as a result nearly destroying the TARDIS with the blast of energy during the process. I know it was all done to be an emotional moment but I lose a lot of respect for him in his final moments
But good Doctor though

@DVROFFMAN Same with Matt Smith. A lot of people have just stopped watching doctor who without giving him a chance.
Galddedon 1 year ago
@Galddedon which they shouldn't cause IMHO he's brilliant. He's still not knocking 7 off of my own top spot but he's my favorite of the revived series so far.
Aahz321 1 year ago
@DVROFFMAN Like Matt Smith has a lot to live up to being after David Tennant.
He's a good Doctor Matt Smith but Tennant will be always be my Doctor.

Is it my imagination or his Peter Davison's voice unusually deep in these clips?

Yeah, I think it is! (Thank Lord, I'm not going crazy!)

how'd you like it ?

I thought it was brilliant--it's probably one of the best debut stories for Doctor Who ever. It showed an ill Doctor, which Peter Davison plays very well--he's always great at conveying pain (like Resurrection of the Daleks, the scene where his memory is being scanned--it makes me cry). That's the only clip I've seen of that serial, but I can't wait to watch it. I finished Time-Flight this morning, so it's season 20 next. I can't wait for the Five Doctors.
harrietamidala1691 2 years ago
Five doctors is good but the plot is a bit caught up with too many cast members.

Peter Davison--The Original Hot Young Doctor! Paving the way for Paul McGann, David Tennant, and Matt Smith (who now takes the crown for being the youngest doctor).
harrietamidala1691 2 years ago 7
Babelcolour, do you have a favourite and least favourite doctor? W/b

McCoy and McGann are my absolute favourites!

Ah. My favourite Doctor. I think Tennant got alot of inspiration from Peter Davison. I think Davison is an amzing actor, and was alot like the new series Doctors. Fantastic Stuff. He acts his 2 little hearts out in "Caves Of Androzani"
5 stars to this and a tremendous Doctor!!

I feel like a serious perv for getting a bit drooly at the shot of Peter in a bathrobe...considering he's only 2 years younger than my dad!
