I've tried to look for this song and you are the only one who has it great song and it made on the top 10 in Hawaii. My favorite song I'm 51 years young and it's great to have people like you! Much Mahalo to you Mr TrashCan1
I roadied for both Jamestown and Mariah. Both were good bands. Jamestown had the brass section(dave bickler played trumpet and flute). Mariah was formed with the one of the two lead singers from JM. JM still plays a couple times a year with the drummer, founder Glenn M. VJ(lead singer, sings on the record ) Jeff Q.(keyboards, trumpet plays on record. with two new members playing bass and lead guiatar
This is a special song. Here's to you Terry.... We all had alot of fun. I will never forget it!! There will always be a special place in my heart for the boys from the Holly Green Campground in Franklinville.
The record made the top 30 In Ottawa, Canada. I have some of the local charts from that time with one listing it reaching as high as #21 (I'm missing the following few charts so it may have done better than that). Great little record.)
This tune was great!,thanks alot for loading it up.I always dug the Chicago bands of the day.Seem to remember people I've met in the past when I played in bands ,who may have been a part of recording this gem. Len Fogarty?Dale Messmer?(Mariah) Where can I find that single-album release from 76? (local Chicago label, maybe Wooden Nickle)
"Having a rough day due to your crack dependency?" "Or maybe you should learn to breathe through your nose 1st before you slam others." "Ladies and gentlemen...A Genuine Dick!!!

Before this vocalist became the the voice of Survivor's "Eye of The Tiger" and other hits, he was one of two lead vocalists for this one-hit wonder group out of Chicago. "Summer Sun" is a light-hearted feel-good tune that was a hit in 1972. Dave Bickler moved on to "Survivor" in the late 70's and early 80's
It's been a long time since I heard this tune -- sounds great. I'm from Chicago and recall this song dominating the air waves back in the day. I can't seem to find it avail. via MP3... any ideas?

@usmad30 Dominating the airwaves? That just goes to show how airplay varied regionally. Here in Philly it was played for a short time on WIP (a middle of the road station) and then disappeared forever.
As I recall, this was a big hit in the Hawaiian islands around summer of 1974. I lived and went to school in calif. (UOP). Alot of my hawaiian classmates came back to school playin' this. i had never heard it before. Great great sound.
Whay a great song. I haven't hear it for over 20 years, when my mom sent to the garbage my old 45RPM collection. Thanks for sharing with us! Greetings from Mexico City!
I was excited to see this! some of the band members lived next door... that bus with the name on it is how we discovered it and boy was it cool to live next door to someone on WCFL, WLS... Chicago Radio was certainly fabulous.
I also listened to this song over and over again at a campground in NJ. Those were the days my friend. Those days were where some of the best memories EVER were made. Thanks so much for the song~
Actually I was wondering if the locale of the radio stations didn't affect this songs airplay and local popularity. I too am from the listening area of WIP and it seems that this was a popular song. Maybe the jersey shore crowd increased it's airplay?
90? Was this the ranking on the Cashbox or Record World charts? I've got the '94 edition of Joel Whitburn's "Top Pop Singles" open to the page with this single listed, and it says on page 209 that Hello Stranger's "Fire & Rain" peaked at #100.
Let's not be TOO hard on records that only hit the bottom reaches.....it still means that SOMEONE out there bought them!! (On my CD anthologies, I even put stuff that only "bubbled under the Hot 100", too.)
It was Billboard Hot 100. But I'm with you. I don't care where it charted, if I like it I'll include it, too. I just wouldn't call it a hit. As I've commented on many of my postings, these were played on my hometown, middle-road station, WIP. That was a great source of obscurities.
I hear ya on that......back then, in Colorado where I grew up, there were a number of GREAT singles all the stations played, like the James Gang's "Must Be Love", and the New York Rock Ensemble's "Beside You." By all rights, both of these should've gone on to become classic-rock faves, but neither was in the upper half of the "Hot 100"....in fact, "Beside You" only bubbled-under.
thanks a million for this!!! It is such a pleasure to hear it, and it rekindles childhood memories... especially because a few of those in the band rented the house next to mine... felt like I was living next to stars!
Bring back golden memories early 70's when I was intermediate - high school. In those days, was great dancing music at night clubs and school dance nites. Was looking all-over for this song!!!
Finally found this song! Big hit here in Hawaii back in the day. You have a great collection of songs and I look forward to seeing what other great memories you have.
Who remembers dancing to the Massacre in high school. I loved their orange colored amps and speakers.

Sounds alot like Gary and Dave's 1973 "If I Ever See You Again(?)...
They don't make them like this in 2011, that's for sure.

This song pre-dates the Chico and the Man theme song.....I love that song and this sounds simlar...
But isn't anyone else interested that this songs singer, Dave Bickler who was 19 at the time, went on to sing the Rocky theme song Eye of the Tiger?
AndrewNewZealand 2 years ago
I'm totally into Bickler! His voice sounds amazing! So mature for such a young man.
