  • 1:43 - is that Harry Potter singing???

  • For those debating the Calvinist vs. Arminian message of this hymn, remember that Wesley (both Charles and John) believed that there was a process of salvation. If you read all six stanzas of the hymn, you see that process clearly. This hymn does not proclaim salvation to all, but that all have the opportunity to receive salvation. The hymn is a story and instructions of how Wesley himself found his assurance of salvation.

  • I can't fully comprehend this kind of Love but I thank you my Lord all the same!

  • Never heard of this one at all

  • Thanks. A song with so much truth and reason why he is worthy to serve.

I wonder how this could be replaced by social justice.

  • Charles Wesley never left his Reformed roots differing from what did his brother John! Hence we have this hymn with many doctrinal features that TODAY do not match Methodist doctrine at all. This hymn does not defend "universal redemption" and the wishy washy doctrine of the the freewiller "arminianists" who crept into John Wesley's doctrine and teaching and his Methodist church. Judging by Charles Wesley's poetry he kept his Calvinistic roots! THANK GOD!

  • @mrmiltonalmeida As a Methodist Pastor and scholar, I must say that is a lot of revisionist history there.

  • Love this hymn.

  • My favorite hymn by Charles Wesley which used to be called the national anthem of Methodism now sadly neglected

  • I,ll always love to sing praise like this but after i heard a message from my pastor saying cross is only designed for the saved people and unsaved people has nothing to do with the cross,i was so discourage even to hear to the gospel songs. i fill like God is partiality if He goes according to Election>

  • @abelsumi7 Your pastor must be a calvinist. He is wrong and so is mrmiltonalmedia. They take passages and verses out of context and twist it to make it say what they want it to say.

  • @ILovestorms lol care to prove that we do? scripture verses to prove your point? anything major we do to disagree with most other baptists? any proof of those?

  • @igeku I am not talking to you! "The Lord is not willing that ANY should perish but that ALL should come to repentence". However, He gave man a will and some DO perish but you calvinists don't believe in the free will of man. God chose to give man a free will. Methodists are not historically reformed or calvinistic.

  • @igeku And I could give you plenty more verses that go against the 5 points of T.U.L.I.P.

  • I just broke down in joyful tears starting from "Alive in Him, my living Head." O a million times thanksgiving for His mercy, grace and goodness is not enough from the eternal death He has saved us from!

  • The expressions of pure joy on the faces of these dear sisters gives proof to the wonderful love of Our Lord. I will sing this with you when we meet at His feet. All praise to the Holy Trinity.

  • We'll never understand the degradation the Son took upon Himself when He came to earth on that first Christmas to redeem His elect. And can it be that any of us are worthy of His grace? Of course not! Only through His divine, infinite mercy . . .

  • We sang this hymn at the funeral of my mother on 10 March 2006; the last verse still makes me tear up. I love you, Momma.

  • Amazing lyrics, we serve a great Lord and Saviour.

  • Love it! A wonderful hymn of thanks and praise. Wesley could sure write some fantastic hymns.

  • @tantawi1992 Or the politically correct producers of Songs of Praise who put them there for the cameras!

  • Why is the woman at 0:37 dressed like a priest?

  • @CCFHymns because she is one from the Anglican church

  • @CCFHymns ...it's sad than God's Word is undermined in so many ways....this is just one, liberalism...

  • in spite of the fact that i'm a 36 year old man, heavily into jazz fusion and mid 70s funk, I'm very happy to say this hymn moves me to tears every time I hear it; possibly the greatest hymn of joyful praise ever written!

  • as a 36 year old man, hevi

  • horrible last verse. sing it properley or not at all. just use the plain harmony nothing fancy - the gospel is a simple message and demands simple music. dooh

  • I remember loving this hymn before I was a christian because of the tune, then I was amazed as a christian singing this again for the first time the line 'my chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth and followed thee'', man could I sing those words and mean them unlike before!

My favourite hymn of all time- I chose it for my baptism, just my possible wedding and funeral to go!

  • I love the hymn soooooooooo much. Hey look its harry potter at 1:45.

  • All I said was the pause was too long between stanzas. I love the hymn, love the Lord, and sing this hymn as often as possible. I just don't like the extra long pause. That's it.

  • Horray! That was great!

  • One of the greatest hymns written praising our Lord and all you can think of is the pauses are too long between stanzas - very sad.

  • It's simply awesome to see all nations praising God!

  • Beautiful - love this hymn

  • Ahhhh! Too long of a pause between stanzas...Great singing though.

  • This is one of the most inspirational hymn.

  • The Methodist Anthem God bless his people

  • آلحمدلله ع نعمة آلآسسلآم ..

  • Attn drServitis.Which line, refrain or precept from the timeless hymn would Satan feel most comfortable in using. For he would be further sealing his impending doom. A house divided cannot stand and for Satan to seize this hymn would be a bit like frosty the snow man deciding to use a flaming sword for his purpose. It will and has consumed him.

  • Attn drServitis.Which line, thought or precept in this dear hymn would Saten dare use for his gain or purpose.A house divided cannot stand and Satan would run from this hymn like a scalded dog.

  • MAY SATAN TAKE CONTROL OF THIS VIDEO AND USE IT FOR HIS PURPOSE.

  • @drServitis -The Blood of Jesus Christ of Nazareth is against you now and forever!

    Praise the Lord Forever!!!

  • @skasha99 really NOT the attitude one should have in Christ. You are the salt and light of the earth. Thereof justify your statement; is it obedient to the work of God? i.e gently instruct and patiently love until the day of repentance

  • @TheJohancha86 - I understand where you're coming from but it just hurt me hear/read satan being promoted like that

  • @skasha99 Yes, but this video cannot be used by Satan. He cannot manipulate God's work. Does all the darkness of the world drown out a single candle? Not so.

Don't worry about him. Just stand firm in your faith, until your knowledge of Christ is perfect and your mindset is broken by grace.

  • I love this song. It's one of my favorite hymns.

  • fabulous sound. any chance of re-recording to get in sync? thanks :)

  • My absolute favorite hymn ever!!

  • Amen..You must be born again to enter the kingdom (John 3:3) In order to be saved you must repent (change your mind about sin) turn from them and hate them. AND trust alone in Jesus Christ. Believing that He alone died for your sins, and rose again on the third day for them. "For whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved" Rom 10:13

  • Thank you!

  • Wow! Beautiful and powerful. So many different experiences of rescue and expressions of gratefulness because each of us is so different. Thankyou Jesus. :B

  • A minute glimpse of heavenly choir?

  • I can never get through praising with this song without getting overcome with emotion.

  • @Fireproof1313 I know what you mean. The words convey a truth too beautiful for the redeemed to contain his or her emotions. It's #57 in our hymnal. I know that because sometimes we are asked if we have a favorite.

  • @Fireproof1313 I agree I cry every time I hear it and love to sing it,,

  • My anthem!

  • THANK YOU!

  • I'm not a Christian, but I am a conductor, I've done many a 'songs of praise' in many places...this great hymn has been consistently included in the repertoire, not by my choice but in every community I have been to. Clearly it is testimony to CW for the greatness of not only his music but also of his devotion.

  • this was an amazing and uplifting rendition and OH what congregation to sing in such harmony and force. how beautiful it must have been to be there. I wish my church would have such wonderful voices to sing his praise... thank you

  • This was filmed at Wesley's Chapel, City Road, London in 2007, the home of world Methodism. It was part of a show celebrating the life of Charles Wesley, 1707-88. The show was brilliant - hosted by none other than Howard Goodall.

  • SOUL SEARCHING,REAL SOOTHING, WONDERFUL AND PREGNANT WITH MEANING. OH MY GOD HE FOUNDETH ME. HOW CAN IT BETHAT I SHOULD GAIN. GOD BLESS YOU AND GUIDE YOU. VAZET

  • These people are singing draggingly and lifelessly! Imagine, they are singing about how the gained an interest in Jesus' Blood because of what He did for them! The lyrics represent the mindset of a cRaZy PrAiSer!!! When our church choir used to sing this we used to have the move of the Holyghost in deliverance and blessing!!!

  • its amazing that they gained an interest in the Saviours blood because the natural man thinks the message of the cross is absolute foolishness but once God saves a person they see the truth of what Jesus has done for them!!!!!

  • @chimmyrim They are singing the hymn in the correct tempo. I look in their faces and see joy. They are hardly lifeless. I believe they are quite aware of what Wesley's lyrics mean. No, they aren't swinging from the rafters, but who am I to say what is in their hearts? The Holy Spirit works in many ways.

  • awesome. just amesome

  • Does anyone know where this was filmed? I guessing London, but what church?

  • Truly a fantastic performance of a spectacular hymn. And it's great to see Harry Potter in the congregation singing his heart out at 01:47 . Thank you so much.

  • This made me weep with joy...AMAZING LOVE! Me a lowly sinner. Thank you, Jesus! I can't wait for the day I can humbly approach the throne of my MAKER!

  • where was this filmed?

  • simply love this hymn!

  • A hymn of complete Glory & Adoration of an amazing & awesome God. Read the lyrics, Charles Wesley wrote this from the heart, he wrote about 6,000 hymns, best thing Lincolnshire grew!!

  • @HeldbyHim2010

There's also John Harrison, Isaac Newton, Maggie Thatcher and, errm, sprouts.

  • Wonderful.............

MAY GOD BLESS THEM THOSE WHO SUNG THIS SONG AND THEY ARE A BLESSING TO EVERYONE

  • We had this at my Mum's funeral. I can't sing it without crying. Such a beautiful rendition, Songs of Praise do it so well!

  • wonderful memories. I learned this hymn in college in the 50's and it has been a favorite ever since

  • I too noticed the striking similarity of the guy with eyeglasses with Harry Potter and I can't help but laugh. It will be a good thing if Harry Potter did indeed meet his Savior and quit witchcraft.

  • One of the few songs that really draws tears of joy. Thank you, God

  • Alovely song. A reminder of God's great love for us.

  • Love this hymn ...

  • Absolute belter of a hymn. Even the agnostics love it... well I do, anyway...

  • Anybody notice Harry Potter in the crowd? lol

  • @bertomelara Yep, at 1:47! lol

  • Charles Wesley is a genius! I love this song, it gives me a tingle to remind me of God's awesome presence on the earth. Thank you for uploading this :)

  • I come back to this often. It is always a pleasure to see Harry Potter singing at 1:47

I wonder if this is the Morrison Congregation again? Does anyone know?

  • I adore this song

  • true tho

  • my chains fell off my heart was free.....I rose, went forth, and followed thee.

  • Fabulous words

  • This is a moving hymn indeed.

  • Many, many thanks for posting this. Our ABC here in Australia broadcast both shows on Charles Wesley, but inexplicably cut this hymn. (!!??)

And what singing - it looks as if the congregation at Wesley's Chapel didn't need their books at all to belt this one out. "Sing lustily and with good courage" indeed!

I found my heart "strangely warmed" watching it.

  • @snappez He may be searching and The Lord may change his heart. God has changed people's heats. Remember what God said to Sarah, when He gave her a child "Nothing is impossible with the Lord" Amen

  • Do these people have any idea the scope of the depth of the words they are singing? I think not! Except for a very few, you'd think these people were singing a phone book if you only see their faces. This is a powerful rich and deep song. I was hoping for a video which would show a new believer friend who lives in another state how RICH this song is. No help here. Sorry

  • @THEcalicoacresmamma People don't have to grin like Cheshire cats, cry openly or leap about like idiots waving arms to feel deeply my friend. It is indeed a wonderful hymn which most congregations in my country love singing. :)

  • @THEcalicoacresmamma They looked quite expressive to me!

  • This is completely wonderful! Amazing Love, how can it be that Thou my God should die for me?

  • Stunning, our religion can half produce some beautiful music!

  • One of greatest hymns ever

  • what a load of crap.. buting people through music..ther is no such thing a a god... fuck sake get a grip

  • @snappez I feel sorry for you :((

  • @theonetenor why?

  • @snappez you'll be able to tell Him one day. Start wondering when, sunshine!

  • @snappez

    Respect other people's choices!

  • @snappez It is your right to believe that, but if you don't believe in God, if you really think this is a load of crap, why watch the video?

  • @snappez Go read about your Atheis theroes Lenin and Stalin

  • @ballinora53 why what do they say?

  • But where are all the young people?

  • @qingloongwong enticed by the world.

  • @qingloongwong there are a few young people in the audience. but SOP does mainly cater for the older generation

  • You can find a lot of Charles Wesley's hymns in recent Roman Catholic hymn books.

  • beautiful

  • Incredile hymn, the contemporary songs has not an ounce on this as they lack they theological significance and sound just like a secular music

  • What a powerful hymn. Praise God!!!

  • One of the greatest songs of all time.

  • You should put a warning on this video. I was bawling.

  • best Charles Wesley song ever my chain fall off my heart was free i rose went forth and followed thee.

  • Almost stirs me enough to actually be a proper Christian

  • Where was this performed? Looking at the faces is just beautiful. Each individual....equally important to the Redeeming God. Hallelujah!

  • @jamindian91 this was performed at Wesley's Chapel in London on BBC's Songs of Praise (21 Oct 2007).

  • What inspirational singing of T.Campbell's tune to Wesley''s timeless words solidly built on Scripture. They fare singing with conviction. May our chains fall off.

  • behave

  • @lobbyback ........"But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are."

  • I just can't pass this up. The guy at 1:45 looks like Harry Potter.

  • as an expat living in an Islamic State, this is true manna from heaven, with all due respect to my Muslim brothers and sisters!

  • @Scotsbell - Good on you, its a sentiment probably shared by many more than have the courage or opportunity to express

  • @chefjohnwt Thank you. You appreciate your faith more when it is oppressed, ie no Bibles, signs of the Cross including necklaces etc to be visible in public.

  • Nothing like a Wesley Hymn to stir the soul. And this singing is magnificant. The sopranos are right on target and the mens parts (I'm a tenor) are sould stirring. And seeing "Harry Potter" singing at 141-144 is priceless

  • great!!!!

  • Even so, all Protestants still use Bibles that are derivatives of the Roman canon, and still preach variants of Petrine and Pauline theology, which are a distinctly Roman Catholic invention going back to Nicaea.

So stop bickering because you're still ALL Catholic.

  • @gearshift35 Nonsense, you spout some Romish propaganda alright.

  • Amazing Love! And an amazing hymn. Thank you for posting it.

  • 1of my favourite hymns. But .."you Methodists"?At aninterdenominational Lent Course (I'm C of E, like the Wesleys) I was accused (incorrectly)of "suffering" from inherited Catholic Guilt! No more visiting the self-righteous Methodists for me.Ironic, given Wesley was accused of trying to re-establish Roman Catholicism.Guess the Methodist felt triumphant.

  • i love this song. it must be sung at my funeral!

  • @mikestamlo As you wish, friend.

  • @mikestamlo As you wish my friend :)

  • I'm grateful and thankful to God for this post. This song stirred my faith up long ago and caused me to believe on the Master. I listened to it for the first time in about 20yrs last night and cried my eyes out for shire elated thankfulness for what Jesus has done and accomplished for us. Thank God for Charles Wesley who had a revelation of the cross of Christ and the freedom that came with it.

  • Beautiful! So many voices together!

  • Cheer, cry, laugh, you Methodists!!

  • This is an amazing hymn. Takes me back to my childhood days at church.

  • Amazing love! How can it be? That thou, my God, hast died for me?

    Immense question.

  • Lifting, this is heaven. All together, one human race

  • beautiful

  • One of my favorite hymns; thank you so much for posting it.

  • I wish I'd been there to sing with them!

  • What can be added from this hymn?? NOTHING!!

" Behold I come as a thief in the night." said the Lord Jesus. Now are you prepared? Have you invited Jesus into your life? Please accept his gift of eternal life by accepting him as your Savior.

In the end every knee shall bend and tongue confess that JESUS is LORD!

  • wunderbar / wonderful ... the lord is sooo good!

    praise him <3

  • Rejoice! Christ will return again in the Heavens in Full Glory!!

    Praise God!

  • This difinitely is the hymn I love most- sang this as I was growing up in my faith in church and with Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship, Philippines, during the 60's. So Scripture- filled and theologically sound. Today's praise and worship songs are just too shallow, subjective, and narcissistic. I pray that churches will go back to these kind of hymns. The congregation and orchestra which sang this is simply fantastic! Our Lord bless them all!

  • I love this hymn, but you don't hear it at church often. Is this a choir or the entire congregation? The harmony in this is gorgeous. Thanks.

    Maureen

  • Such a beautiful hymn. May Christ bring all his flock together. Puts a smile to my face. Christians all united!

  • Great to see white and black blend in church for God's Glory!Wonderful hymn

  • excellent....

  • @metheprince Greetings from Coleraine Methodist Church in Northern Ireland brill

  • Excellent and Amazing. A beautiful Hymn being sung by the beautiful creation of God. All glory be to HIM

  • We sing this quite often in our Uniting Church in Australia. We all love to sing it. The words and music is inspiring. In my opinion this is one of the best hymns ever.

  • Thank you FABIORAMSAY for posting this beautiful song, I belong to the spanish SDA church and we dont have this song in our song book, i know it because we do have it in english, I enjoy playing this song in my piano, God bless you richly.

  • Great hymn and great organ. Sure wish they would sing these great old hymns. As a Methodist-this is great church music and the hymns in "The Faith We Sing" paperback hymnal just doesn't cut it.

  • It's such a beautiful scene for seeing people of different races attentively praise God together.

    Halleluia!

  • Excellent presentation. Exceptionally beautiful.

  • Beautiful and grand hymn! I love to hear choirs as well as congregational singing accompanied by a pipe organ!

    The trumpets also sounded awesome!

  • Feliciter84 - sorry to be pedantic - but neither the words nor the tune are Victorian! This is a Charles Wesley hymn of the mid 18th century and the tune "Sagina" was written by Campbell in the 1820's- all well before Queen Victoria. This is the best hymn writing of "The Great Awakening" of the Evangelists John Wesley and George Whitefield, the founders of the Methodist Movement.
