most people that train bjj appreciate the different technical aspects of the game allowed by wearing a gi. it allows you to see a lot of different angles and techniques that translate to no gi and even mma. i won't train at a school that only offers no gi.
It looks like the royal family of Abu Dhabi is really into grappling these days. Now Abu Dhabi has the largest jiujitsu and submission grappling event in the world. Well it's always nice to be rich and powerful Hahahaha..
BJJ = Butt-flopping Jiu Jitsu ... stop with the guard pull, it's a stupid and horrible technique. Why not takedowns or throws? A blue belt Judoka would own these black belts in takedowns.
@wjat89 personally, I think BJJ guys are the best submission artists in the world but they really lack the standing phase of grappling. I saw many old documentaries of Helio Gracie and the way he fought was day and night (compared to modern BJJ guys). Helio stood up and grappled with world class judokas and wrestlers. He didn't pull guard (based on the videos I've seen). I know BJJ guys love this technique but I think Frank Mir is right when he said that BJJ guys have lost their standup touch.
@WisdomValleser well, first of, not true ... depends on the judoka. I've seen plenty of judokas submit higher belt bjj guys then again, i've seen low level bjj guys submit higher judoka guys. The door swings both ways. Watch this video of a blue belt judoka submitting bjj guys of same level:
watch?v=oXsBmYDPQUU
But I do still think that if you remove "pull guard" form BJJ competitions, their standup would increase dramatically within 6 months. Currently, only a few good bjj guys know standup.
i understand its just that, the way i look at it is in the street or in a MMA match no-gi is slightly more functional (street, jeans n t-shirt & mma skin tight wear). Gi's do look awesome though.
Yes, But the basics like Triangle's Armbar's Kamura's Mount, Getting someones back, Regardless if i never take a no gi class a day in my life, I still know that what i learn in my gi training like the basics i listed are good enough for any street fight.
You dont need a gi to learn how to choke someone out or mount them and pound there lights out.
Gi is just a way of learning and if you want to compete without beating each other to death the way to go. You cant rank up in bjj without a gi.
@corylepire Yes you can rank up in no gi... dont talk about shit you dont know. and you dont "need" anything to learn how the move works... just cuz you get ANY position or submission, doesnt mean shit. you have to know to finish, hold, stop, defend, or something. No gi also doesnt mean shit about striking. you can roll no gi just as hard as you can gi, alotta times even harder. try it out before you comment. "ignorance is.... well just ignorance man."
For some of us in colder climates training with a Gi is definitely functional in the street, we wear jackets 8 months out of the year hear in northern Ohio.
@DecriminalizeLiberty Don't get me wrong, I love both games equally! But....If i have a long sleeve on or a jacket I can Ezikial choke someone, or visa versa. I can easily choke someone with their own collar shirt or jacket. I think it can go both ways. In a street fight though, there are no rules so some will do whatever for survival or a win. I think training in both will leave you with much confidence in all aspects, MMA, Competition, Street or just training.

How is that disappointing?
It keeps you on your toes, Listen to the wise instructors when they say there is an infinite amount of moves.

You can grab pants and jackets/hoodies in the street. No such luck in No-Gi.

What a sloppy sport clear the fuken mat make it look "professional" thats why this will never be an Olympic sport.

The sport isn't sloppy, but I agree, it's a world cup, and people are sitting on the mats, and it looks quite unpro indeed :s
