The shoes will drive you nuts. I lived in a Japanese house where I had to slip out of my indoor shoes to enter the tatami floors in stocking feet over and over a million times a day as I went in and out of rooms. Will you forget and leave the toilet wearing the toilet only slippers? Yes. Will you walk home in the indoor shoes and leave your real shoes behind? Yes. Do the Japanese like your mistakes? No.
@Limastudent i have a tatami room in my apartment, but yeah, i pretty much just walk around barefoot in here al the time or i just have socks on (when it's cold outside!) but taking slippers on and off in a house can definitely be annoying! and i've totally done the bathroom slippers thing! haha!
Indoor shoes are indeed a challenge to understand. I accidentally wore my indoor shoes home from work recently. My wife (Japanese) was like... :-) Happy belated B-day! -Kurt :-)
Hope you dont mind, but i made a video response to your video. Maybe we could do coordinating vlogs so viewers get two different examples. Just a thought, if not thats cool too! Interesting just to see what the deal is for shoes with you down south.....
hi i'm an incoming jet! i'm going to be teaching at 5 different places. do you carry your indoor shoes with you everywhere or do you just leave them all around town?
@monherown hello and congrats! good question. i carry mine with me from school school. i think a lot of JETs do, but i've known some to buy several pair of really cheap sandals or something and just leave them at each school. but i just keep mine in my car so i always have them.
@lovestef2000 it depends on the restaurant. if you have an enkai, most likely it will be a traditional restaurant and you'll take off your shoes b/c you'll be sitting on tatami. other places are carpeted and want you to change into slippers. some places don't care and you can walk right in. but i would say there's a pretty good chance you'll be taking off your shoes in a restaurant.
@PathfinderARA it's more common than you think. i don't eat out a ton, so i can't give you a "this is how many times a week i have to take off my shoes" answer... but depends a lot on how the restaurant is set up... bar-type places, places with tatami, you'll have to take off your shoes. there's been times i thought i wouldn't have to take my shoes off, and then we get there and you have to change out of them.
uwagutsu no koto?!!lol interesting. im raised here but i never get used to the bad smell of shoe box in public especially in this rainy season lol my dad is a teacher, he wears flip flops :D a lot of my teachers in my high school did too. i dont remember about middle school, im too old...lol..i am so happy that youre actually here now!!
@randomyoko haha!! none of the teachers at my school wear flip flops!! i'm the only one! i wish others would too! you're on kyuushu right? oh... i'm sure it's getting SO hot there right now! i wish i could pull on shorts and a tank-top at school too but i feel like that definitely wouldn't be allowed!! haha!
I have a very similar ballet-flat deal for my indoor shoes! Great minds. :) I wear those little cutout socks with them in the summer. Do you agree that it's exciting to run outside in your indoor shoes during an emergency drill?
Interesting that you need a separate pair of indoor shoes for the gym. I have one pair of tennis shoes I use indoors (regardless of the room unless it's carpeted/tatami) at my schools. Few seem to care what's on your feet as long as they're covered.
@NikkeinJapan haha, that was one of the first things i was warned about was to have indoor gym shoes! but unless they lay tarps down, you have to take off your indoor shoes to go into the gym at the schools that i go to. which i find a bit odd, i tried to ask once and people just answered, "b/c it's the gym so you have to take off your shoes." didn't answer my question, but i find a lot of things are explained to me with that sort of reasoning.
Thank you so much for this, I've been going nuts trying to figure it out. I've ended up buying crocs as they seem to not smell and are easy to take on and off. I've just put up a vid about my placement if you're interested :o)
@nikio84 crocs seem to be a popular choice and a safe way to go!! i'll go check out your vid! thanks! if you have any other questions, feel free to shoot them my way!!! congrats on coming to japan! whoooooo!!! ^_^
Great vid~! I remember being so confused about indoor shoes too. We have the same taste in shoes too. I wear black ballet flats too. (I go barefoot as much as I can too!) I still haven't gotten into the habit of letting myself not match my shoes with outfits. haha Therefore, I have like 6 different pairs of indoor shoes. Glad to see you back to vlogging! Yay for us June babies. Happy Birthday! ^0^ II'm 27, you're 28... dun dun dun.... we're arasa now (Japanglish for Around Thirty!)
@nihonjenn yay for ballet flats and yay for june babies!! yeah, indoor shoes gave me a lot of grief!! hahaha... and arasa!! my students were trying to tell me that, but i didn't really understand! it makes sense now. *sigh* 30!! lol... oh well, i hear 30 is the new 20, sooooooooooooo ;)
shanyn! Love the video! Thank you for being so helpful for future JETS :) I will be in Japan this weekend..no big deal. :) Thanks again
