This commercial wasn't trying to represent an overweight AA woman. It was trying to represent an overweight woman. I understand that for years AAs have been portrayed in such a way that it's making people think that we're all lazy, loud and overweight.(don't worry, your not the only one that notices). I think the point is that her collection fits all shapes, sizes and races. However, the fact that we have the instinct to pick up on such things, makes me worry about how much racism in the media
I love this commercial. It's clever, fun, and campaigns for real beauty. Even though the camera panning away, going back and the person being different thing has been done before, they do it well here.
Right you are the only person that can understand any racism because your black. Don't know what you are talking about. How you think the AA woman is being portrayed any worse then the other women in this commercial just because she is heavier. But if you think most women are fit (don't know why you are talking about educated since this commercial has NOTHING to do with education). The average size for American women is 16. Hardly fit.
Because I am concerened about how media presents images of AA's, something that would not be noticeable to those who are not concerned about it. However, if you would like further information about it, Google has a wealth of information on the subject.
I HATE this commericial!!! As an African American woman, we are tired of being the fat one the loud one. We are not characters and are tired of being misrespresentive in the media. I do not know these women they chose to represent me. Sofia has a body like most AA women I know. Stop stealing our lips, our asses, our sexuality!!! Tired of never being seen in a positive light. There are so many beautiful, educated AA women. Is America afraid to show us in a positive way? Makes you wonder?
@vclay844 Wow! Most AA women you know look like Sophia? I need to move to THAT neighborhood. The truth is I see MANY AA women that look like the one in this commercial, as well as MANY White, Latin, and Asian women that are very overweight. Makes me WONDER why MORE of THEM do not follow a healthier lifestyle. Iincluding better nutrition AND exercise..
@bigtony10 Unless you are AA, you cannot begin to understand. Sofia doesn't look like Sophia. To clarify a lot of women are famous for big butts, full lips etc.( all very common to AA women). The media has turned AA women in to jokes and it is very confusing. You are correct most Americans are overweight but you wouldn't know it from watching tv. Most women I know are beautiful, fit, and educated. So, just looking around I wonder why that is hidden in the media.
Blacks used to be the " in thing " now they are kinda wack. . . time to let the other races shine. . blacks don't bring anything new to the table anymore. . i wanna see more asian and mexican females get there shine now
@vclay844 Yeah you definitely aren't making a mountain out of a mole Hill. Also Sofia didn't steal a Goddamn thing. I'm so sick of ignorant as sounding black women who make this argument it's stupid, dumb and you sound ignorant as hell.
@CeReAlgurl95 IDIOT TOTAL IDIOT!!! Ok, my mistake to use this forum to respond to a total distorted view of an AA woman. CeReAlgur95 I did not say Sofia stole anything. It is the media that has shown us (AA women) from a very narrow viewpoint. It is just extraordinaily frustrating, when you only see AA women fat, loud, and angry. So very confusing. I wish that we could have an open dialogue but it is impossible. Sofia is a funny, smart, forty something woman-that is all I know about her.
@vclay844 I'm with you my sister. As a black man I was shocked to see the only representative of plus size was black. Nothing wrong with plus size, but they could've varied the size of the other women as well. I see we were both sensitive to this.
@vclay844 Sofia is actually 39. I think they should have found a slender attractive Black female for this part. In no other race is obesity presented as sexy.
@vclay844 The commercial was represented the larger woman, it just so happens that she was black. Again the model is not representing African American women, she was representing the more voluptuous woman.
@vclay844 Um You're the one who see's plus size in a negative way. And in no way did they put the African American women in a negative light. It just so happens she was used to represent a fuller figured women, which is what the clothing line is about. It's so you can feel sexy no matter your shape or size.
@soulbrotha63 Ok now that I know, I can answer you. Um does it matter? It's not like she's really fat, she's more like big boned I mean did you look at her stomach it wasn't jutting out or anything.
@mayo2198 Actually, you didn't answer anything. Does it matter? Clearly not to you, and that's fine. But since that is the case, there is no point to discussing this further. Have a good day.
