I believe you can cover a song in an original way....case in point "you cant hurry love" Phil collins cover of a Supremes hit. Similar yet still unique.

'I'm In Love With My Car' was written and sung by Queen drummer, "Roger Taylor" after Freddie Mercury refused to sing the song himself. Mercury thought the song was a joke when it was initially presented to him by Taylor.
