Oh yeah the running man this bring back memories... me and my boy used to get down big time with this... sword in one hand shield in the other your heart was beating so fast the dnag spider would come out of no where and kill you.. scary, the blob , the knight... man what a game
When I was younger, this game was sooooo hard. When I saw the monsters, I would turn and try to run lol. This was my first "console" kinda sorta(it's a computer). Playing this game at like 6 years old was really scary... USE FLASK USE FLASK NORTH, no idea what I was doing... Typed "Look" for the first time... Start to sing out loud: *I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW THE RAIN HAS GONE*, that's a hardcore game right there. I still have it.
I'm a bit of a fan of dungeon crawlers in general, and I don't understand why you keep spinning in place at around 1:30. Level grinding? Secret (practicaly obscure) doors that open elsewhere? Phone answering? A moment of brief amnesia in wich you didn't remember to be recording a video for someone else to watch?
Apart from that, thanks for sharing such old glories with everyone.
This game was the first game I remember really playing and getting into. I was 4 and it was WAY too complicated for me, but... damn, it still holds up well! Forget Resident Evil and Silent Hill - THIS was the first survival horror game!
Ohh gosh this brings back memories...wish I still had this game...each time I played it took me 40 minutes of heavy concentration..and out of all that I only managed to make it too level 3...and I was always getting killed by the wizard...you just wanted to beat his arse caus you know he's got something worthwhile...LOL...
I love the hilarious strategy of dropping a bunch of inventory items on the ground and watching the monsters pick them up instead of attacking you. You're pounding away on them and they're going "ooooo...a pine torch! I've always wanted one of these!!"
@paulv1973 Yeah. 5 massive maps, audio, tons of items, etc... Mind boggling. That, and it was a really playable and addictive game. Brilliant stuff! You can't even get a desktop icon for 8 KB these days :]
"but I was more impressed by being in the middle of a photorealistic battle programmed by salaried and expert game studio technicians..."
That requires zero imagination. Those game designers have already imagined it all for you, in complete detail. No thinking involved. No imagination involved. Ie. Boring.
In the 80's, you had to imagine more than what there was on the screen. And that made it better. By far.
I agree with your point about imagination..I'm fully with the idea of using your brain to create atmosphere..but I think studios like Epic have made an effort to create an atmospheric world. Let's give the guys and gals credit where it's due!
I'm old enough to have played Level 9 text adventures and Zork!
Oh, I don't know...I hadn't played a game for 4 years until I saw Gears and couldn't rest until I had a 360!
I was always impressed by the old games...e.g. 3D Tank Duel on a TRS-80....but I was more impressed by being in the middle of a photorealistic battle programmed by salaried and expert game studio technicians...
@longclawson Lol Disks scratch themselves over time my friend. Your games will only last a few years. 10-15 at the most with proper care (using clean sleeves and being careful.)
@longclawson Because everyone knows that graphics and gore is what truley makes a good game. It's not like the gameplay is important or anything -_-; ...........
I have to admit, I still dust off my 25 year old Coco 2 to play this game. I wish I still had my old tape deck to save the games... it sucks when the fake wizard attacks you at the beginning of level 3... LOL!!!
Aww, I was so little when I watched my brothers playing this game. It always scared me so bad! Looking back now though... I was scared far too easily. Thanks for bringing back the memories! ^-^ (No, seriously, I mean that in a good way.)
I used to make love while playing this game. My wife was sexually attracted to some of the monsters, but I deigned to ignore this and focus on my own sexuality. I felt a bit phony in doing this, but it was better than having nothing and no one at all.
I see you play left-handed. That was my choice as well, easier to "roll" the attack quickly.
This game was the first home game to really startle me.
The first arcade game to do that was Sinistar "I LIVE!" :O
I downloaded .05 of the pc port of this game from the DOD wikipedia page. It worked great for me. Pretty faithful adaptation for those who don't still have their TRS-80 COCO handy.
i used to play this for hours....and this is just classic....thanks for the memories

I could hear that some creatures were around, , but could not see them. So I started turning around to keep them from sneaking on me.

Still one of my favorite dungeon crawler games of all time. The beating heart was brilliant and the action was super fast paced.

I guess this game is rather advanced for it's time. 3D effects looks kinda neat and you don't seem to have to wait forever for next screen to appear.

i beat this game by figuring out the creatures pick up items before attacking,,, classic stuff!!!

Man I loved this game as a kid. Mad props to the programmer...they made this game fit on a cartridge with like 8kb of memory. Really impressive.
