  • @ bauribob whats the grvael you use called? And can the play sand be the one from Walmart?

  • @alphasquid1 I don't know what kind of gravel it is, some kind of aquarium gravel - never buy the same stuff twice. If the sand is okay for use in children's sand boxes, it should be okay in your aquarium. Just rinse it every well first to get rid of the fine silt. Firsst put the sand in your tank, place a bowl or dish on the sand and slowly fill, directing the water into the dish so as not to stir up the sand.

  • What type of gravel do I use? What's it called? Please answer

  • @alphasquid1 I only use gravel in the pots where I have live plants. The bottom of my tank is covered with sand - ordinary play sand you can buy at Home Depot or Lowes.

  • how would dislike this

  • Awesome video you gave me a lot of good ideas. And to think I was about to use a sterilte tub in my tank. Thanks.

  • TuRTleZZ

  • I wish my turtles lived here.

  • lucky turtles!!!

  • I honestly don't see how any human being can dislike this video.

  • AWESOME TANK!! you have very helpful tips and ideas!! quick question, you mentioned about your turtles laying eggs, I assume you have both male and female. Is your male aggressive towards your female?

  • Thanks alot, where did you get your acrylic sandbox from, I have been trying to find some everywhere and I can't find them.

  • @Dubbyloves619 the same guy who made my tank makes my acrylic sand boxes, shallow water platforms, etc. So check with someone who builds acrylic tanks and he/she can build anything else you need as well.

  • What kind of water filter do you use for your tank?

  • @Dubbyloves619 wet/dry trickle filter with a sump.

  • You have a beautiful tank. Maybe one day I will have something half as nice

  • u r a genious....... i no im not becaue i dont no how to spell genious.... (:

  • could yo please tell me all the live plants you use in your tanks ? thanks

  • @leosandco moss balls, bronze wendtii, and some miscellaneous string plants from the river.

  • @BauriBob sweet thanks!

  • What vot lightbulb do You use

  • @MegaBeardieboy using Zoo Med PowerSun 100W UVA/UVB heat lamps.

  • Awesome! Very creative- thanks for sharing. :-)

  • How many gallons is that tank and how much money did u spend on everything you showed in you video?

  • @204jromano don't recall the number of gallons, it is 8 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 17" tall. There is a total of about 200 gallons of water including the sump underneath the tank.

  • Could you tell me how to create a basking area?

  • @xTreecko01 My basking platform is an acrylic box, 16"l x 12"w x 4"h. It is filled with sand since females lay eggs (whether there are males or not). The ramps are made of eggcrate covered with 1/4" plastic mesh. The mesh is secured to the eggcrate with cable ties. I use brass pins to secure the ramp directly into the sand through the holes in some overhanging mesh. the other end rests on a shallow water platform. I use PVC to build the supporting scaffold.

  • Huge enclosure nice how many turtles do you have.

  • @reptilekid2000 I have five mud turtles.

  • Does you turtles eat the plants? I have 2 big turtles and they destroy EVERYTHING, include fake plants!

  • incredible enclosure

  • i have a turtle about 10 cm long which lives in a very small tank and she barely can turn in it

because its so small how could i make a diy turtle tank, and how much will a normal tank for him cost?

    thanks

  • @AngelTheDiamond If there's one thing turtles need, it is space. Turtles are roamers by nature so by all means get her a bigger tank. I don't build my own tanks. If you want to build your own you will have to search the web for DIY instructions. In the meantime you can buy a rubbermaid plastic tank at any hardware store just to give her some space. You can also get great deals on used tanks. Glasscages (on the web) makes nice acrylic tanks. Good luck.

  • like @28cleanvikings said is one of the best tanks but you should add more fish to make it more interesting...maybe some puffers...rays...eels....crabs...etc :))

  • @HarlemzzFinest I've thought about it, but I already have catfish and darters in there plus some ghost shrimp. I really don't think the tank is large enough to hold any more critters. Rays and eels can get large. Crabs will probably get eaten. Also remember that this is a fresh water setup, not salt water.

  • oh man you are a genius, i would have never thought of anything like this! great vid! by the way, how many gallons is your tank?

  • whoa, that pvc took is cool! i havnt seen that before, i want one now

  • mine is a 20 gallong tank, with 2 turtles and a light and filter with a basking dock

  • Perfect Tank hands down best on youtube i wish i had it :)

  • This looks great!

  • did you use anything to glue the PVC piping together?

  • @axelboll no, just stuck it together, fits fairly tightly. But if you prefer, you can use PVC glue to permanently seal the joints. I don't find that gluing is necessary for this kind of structure.

  • Awesome tank!

  • what kind of filter system do u use?

  • @chibearsfan1 I wanna know what they're thinking also? seems like an awfully big tank, Canister filter? Fluval? Eheim?

  • Your tank is jawdropping amazing! Thank you so much for the easy to follow how to. I've got a bare bones tank that I'm setting up. Great ideas!

  • must be a bitch to clean

  • nice tank

  • turtle !!!!!!!!! LOL

  • Where did u get the egg crates?

  • @Jrm653 you can buy eggcrate at most hardware stores, often used with lighting. I have found it at both Lowes and Home Depot.

  • how to u keep it clean

  • @dresscodeviolater the filter does most of the work, I just do partial water changes, siphon debris that accumulates in the two corner boxes (where the plumbing is located).

  • How is Fern?

  • @juanbau172 Fern is doing great though she is apparently gravid right now. She gets heavy in the water and has buoyancy problems when that happens. Am hoping she will lay her eggs without assistance. In the past she has required oxytocin injections to stimulate egg laying. I suspect she has neurological issues that may make it difficult for her. She is not eating right now, a sign she is ready to lay eggs. Early next week I will take her to the vet for oxytocin ,if necessary.

  • your tank is BAD ASS

  • did u build the tank itself

  • @VEA2012 no, had an aquarium shop build it for me.

  • @MrUnclemichael you can also handle him aleast 15 min, a day and he should grow to true you I have a turtle that I have had for 3 year and with in months he come right out the shell he use to go in his shell lik a rock but now i cant get him to go back in...

  • do you think does will drop???

  • your tank is beautiful

  • thats a big tank

  • & I thought I had a cool set up in my Tub lol.

  • Where can i buy a turtle ??

  • @callum563 usually at a pet store. You might first want to learn a little about turtles so the experience is good for both you and the turtles. Join the Turtle Forum online and read up on the topic. It is not easy to maintain a good turtle habitat, you want to make sure you are really willing to invest the time and effort, and a little money on this hobby.

if you live in a warm climate, you can visits lakes, rivers, streams and watch turtles without having to care for them.

  • How come whenever my turtles are basking they run back into the water when i come near them

  • @MrUnclemichael they are afraid of you, pretty natural reaction. Do you have places in your tank for the turtle to hide? Turtles need to be able to hide in order to feel safe. Caves, logs, vegetation, that sort of thing. Hopefully with time the turtle will grow to trust you.

  • Where did you buy the mesh at? Because i looked for it hat OSH and i couldn't find it anywhere..

  • Theres a show on Animal planet called Pets 101 and I could just see you on it explaining your setup for people and giving advice.

  • the turtles think they died and went to heaven

  • Hi I'm an educator here in Hillsborough county and I'm working on setting up a tank in my office space. I love you set up and really think something like this would be awesome in my room. I already have a 55gallon tank and a lamp, but am looking for other items which would benefit my tank over all. Any pointers? Do I need more than one lamp and so on. Your tank really is wonderful and inspiring!

  • @matt30512 My tank is a bit larger than yours, so naturally I need multiple lamps. I have no idea what your tank looks like or what you have in it, so it is hard to give you advice. You might look at adding Mopani wood, fish hide near it, turtles use it to scratch their shells. If you have turtles, best to have UVA/UVB heat lamp. Also have areas that are not brightly lit, and places to hide in the tank. If you have turtles, it is also nice to have a shallow water area.

  • @BauriBob Thank you for your promptness. Yes you do have a larger tank for sure, but as it stands right now mine is bare. I'm in the preplanning stages prior to ordering my turtles (any hints on a good place to purchase?) I was thinking about trying to do a multitier system using your PVC method. What wattage is good for the bulb(s)?..more than one? This tank will be for three young turtles I hope in the smaller range on size. Thanks for your patience and kind feedback :)

  • @BauriBob Oh also, sry for so many questions, what soil do you plan your plants in? I was just curious as most soils you can purchase have chemicals in them and so on....I prefer your green look wiht real and artificial mix.

  • @matt30512 I don't use soil, only gravel. Works pretty well, roots get nutrients from the water and waste that settles in the pots.

  • @BauriBob oh ok thanks good to know. Any other pointers or tips. I had a few more questions above...think you might be able to help answer some of those for me?

  • @matt30512 I don't want to answer specific questions since I do not know that much about your setup. I will tell you what I am using in my tank but I won't suggest what you should use in yours. If you are not already a member, think about joining the Turtle Forum, lots of good advice there for all species of turtles.

  • That is the most amazing turtle tank I've ever seen.

  • hey i have a 75 gal. now and i need a really good cheap fillter can you make a vid about how to make home made fillter or can you send me a vid of one thanks

  • @MYTURTLE123 I didn't make my own filter. There are DIY instructions online, just search the web for them.

  • @BauriBob what do you use then

  • @MYTURTLE123 I have a custom built sump for my wet/dry filter. It was built by the same guy that built my tank. It is pretty much like any store bought sump except a little larger. There are many DIY filter plans online that you can try including wet/dry filters. I have never gone that route.

  • would a ceramic clay head thats painted harm the turtles?

  • @faceless0ne1 sorry, but I have no idea. depends on what's in the paint I would imagine.

  • hay have you ever made a acrilic basking platform that goes on top of the tank? if not its ok

  • @lizardluver2469 I experimented with an above tank basking area some time ago but I didn't care for the way it looked. I think one could be designed though that would look nice and free up some space inside the tank. I still think about trying it again some time.

  • where did you get the egg crate and the plastic mesh. Thanks

  • @pointlessness15 The eggcrate is available in most hardware stores like Lowes or Home Depot. The plastic mesh I use is available from Aquatic Eco-Systems, Inc. located here in Florida. You can find them on the web.

  • I'm sure someone already asked, but how can anyone "dislike" this??

  • Thank you very much for uploading this video! Was inspired, and am in the process of making stuff for my new setup. Funny note: went to Home Depot and asked about plastic mesh.

Me: "Hi, where is the plastic mesh located?"

    Store rep: "Plastic what?"

Me looking at list to double check: "Uh..plastic mesh."

Store rep: "Plastic mesh...What is used for, sir?"

Me: "O.o? Um...Here, watch this video on my phone."

Store rep: "Oh neat, Turtles! It'll be in the fencing area, sir."

  • You said it helps having fish, ghost shrimp. Do you feed them, or do they just feed off the scraps of the tank? and thanks for the earlier response! oh and where did you get those plastic sand boxes?

  • @TheGlenlogue I have an automatic feeder that drops Hikari carnivore wafers which the fish, ghost shrimp, and turtles eat. I generally feed the turtles fish or chicken as well, the fish and ghost shrimp steal what they can. I'm sure they also feed off the debris as both the catfish and ghost shrimp are bottom feeding scavengers.

the platic boxes are custom made by the same guy who built my tank.

  • You said it helps having fish, ghost shrimp. Do you feed them, or do they just feed off the scraps of the tank? and thanks for the earlier response!

  • How do you manage to clean that thing with sand substrate, rocks and wood? Does your tank get stinky? The tank looks excellent, very clean and natural looking!

  • @TheGlenlogue I don't really clean the tank. I do partial water changes twice a week. I siphon debris that settles behind the corner boxes where the wet/dry plumbing is, but I don't do anything for the sand, plants, mopani wood. The wet/dry filter is a very efficient biological filter and breaks down the ammonia wastes rather quickly. Having fish, ghost shrimp, and live plants helps quite a bit as well. Large volume of water is also important in diluting waste.

  • is that sand from the beach??? cause i want to put some in my

  • @TheJoemartin that is ordinary play sand that you can buy at most hardware stores. Comes in 40 or 50 lb bags.

  • @BauriBob ya thats good but im maby making a basking plase and im gonna use pet store sand

  • Man, that's gotta be the best tank I've seen on YouTube. Great set up and very helpful for me. I only have 1 hatchling and a 10 gallon tank, but I plan on expanding on both within the next year. And this video gave me some ideas.

  • @mikevaldez9 thanks. good luck with your next tank.

  • @BauriBob Quick question. How much are you supposed to feed hatchlings? I've read only give them what they can eat in 15min. I've also read to only give them an amount of food that equals the volume of their head. I don't want my turtle to over eat and be unhealthy, then again I don't want him to starve either.

  • @mikevaldez9 I can't give you a formula. I've heard both of those and I suppose they are as good as any. Hatchlings might get a little fat but they grow so fast that you'll hardly notice. Once they start to mature the issue of feeding every other day or so makes sense. I only keep my hatchlings a few weeks before releasing into the wild, so I feed mine as much as they want, purposely growing them fast so they have a chance out there.

  • I would LOVE to be living in that tank if i was a turtle!

  • @goldenhawk22 my problem is this i only got smaller tank !!! the owner of the petshop gave it to me and he said it's perfect for baby turtles!!!! but!! it is too small !!!! please help me!!!! it's maybe 15 inches wide and 25 inches long!!

  • @imortalgothic turtles grow, some can get quite large, and they all live a good 30 to 40 years. So keeping turtles is not trivial. Turtles are natural roamers and spend their lives foraging for food. The more space you can give a turtle, the better off it will be and the more pleasure you will have observing them. I have several hatchling videso up on YouTube if you are looking for ideas. There is no size that is too large, just what you can accommodate in your home.

  • how do you change the water of the tank? Is it hard? Removing all those decorations.. then putting it back again...

  • @goldenhawk22 It is very hard, takes two days to complete. I only do that once a year or so.

  • man this is the best turtle tank in the world

    maybe i can do better

  • how big is your tank

  • @frank1971ification 8 feet long, 3 feet wide, 17" high, water depth 12", total water volume including sump is about 200 gallons.

  • First, his is the best turtle tank I've seen yet, great job!

Thank you for this tutorial too. It's given me lots of ideas for my turtles...

    A couple questions for you:

    1. What is that mesh you use? Brand?

    2. Do you glue the PVC together or just let friction do it's thing?

    3. Do you make your acrylic trays yourself also? How about a tutorial on that?

    Thanks again!

  • @DriveWRX I buy the mesh from Aquatic Eco-Systems, Inc. They are on the web. The product number is N1170. The PVC is not glued, just friction. I don't make my own acrylic trays, the guy who built my tank also makes any acrylic accessories I may need.

  • This is the coolest home turtle aquarium I have every seen. Nice job!

  • i want to be one of ur turtles

  • Must have lots of work to do when they poop. :<

  • how do you keep ur turtle from eating your fish?

  • @Robomonkey5000 some turtles are more aggressive with fish than others and some fish are more susceptible to attack than others. Catfish probably do better than most in a shared tank. But if your turtles get hungry enough, they will go after your fish.

  • @BauriBob thank you!!

  • Nice tank :D:D:D

  • getting a new tank this week that is higher than normal and was concerned about a basking platform... THIS VIDEO WAS AWESOME HELP!!! Thank-you!! :D got my list and going to the store this weekend! Now... That white boxy looking stuff... :) Did you call it "A" crate or "Egg" crate? And is it also at the hardware store??? Also, the acrylic... Can you purchase it as box for the sand? Or did you put it together? I'm sure I'll have many more questions! :) Thank-you again!

  • @kellyjobarr some people spell it eggcrate, some egg crate. It is available in most hardware stores. My acrylic boxes are custom made by the same guy that built my tank. I use them for a basking platform to hold sand and for shallow water platforms.

  • @BauriBob thank-you!

  • your rich...

  • That must be a bitch to clean!

  • @thecaity122 a full tank cleaning, as in emptying and refilling, maybe once every year or two, yes, two day job. Routine maintenance is not that bad.

  • @BauriBob oh okay

  • @BauriBob how do you keep it that clean?mine gets dirty after 2 weeks, i need a canister filter :c

  • @KevinIsM8ig The larger volume of water you have the easier to keep clean. I have a wet/dry filter but a canister should do the job if it is rated at two or three times the actual gallons you have in your tank.

  • @BauriBob mmh, i have a 150 litres tank, so i'll need a +- 500 litres canister filter right?

and does this mean the ammount of water filtrated each hour because in my pet shop it is x litres an hour on the boxes, there are some Eheim ones

  • @KevinIsM8ig 300 liters per hour should work okay unless you have more than one turtle or if your turtle is very large (which means you need a larger tank as well).

  • @BauriBob i have 3 yellow belly sliders , which length are about 7.5 centimetres each(i dun't know in inches sorry) so i need a 1000 litres filter or so?

  • @KevinIsM8ig I'm not sure about that. I strongly suggest you join the Turtle Forum and and post the question there, you'll get tons of answers. I have a trickle wet/dry filter with nearly 800 liters of water volume that can handle large bio loads. You can try one canister and monitor the ammonia and nitrite levels. If they are zero, you should be okay as long as you do regular partial water changes to keep nitrates down.

  • i have a 1 month old desert tortoise and i know this is a turtle video not a tortoise video, but i have a problem. this started happening about a week ago but ive been seeing a lot of nats or fleas, in my tortoise cage. im not sure if its because its moist, if its the bedding, the fact the cage doesnt have a top on it, or even if theyre coming from inside the tank. all i know is its annoying seeing those bastards flying around everywhere. i need your help, any advice on getting rid of them?

  • @dontshootmydik I have no experience with that type of setup. I would imagine it must be kept very clean though our bugs will come, nest and breed.

  • @BauriBob oh well. i think i figured it out. i just think its the bedding. i found out that they are little fruit flies so i figure its also the lettuce or the food im giving him. i keep his enclosure really clean though, so i think they get attracted by the lettuce and hide in the bedding so im gonna have to get different bedding. but for know i just put a small black towel over the top of the enclosure. its an aquarium ;)

  • @dontshootmydik visit the Turtle Forum online, join the forum and visit the section for land tortoises. You will find many folks with similar experiences as yours and they will be able to offer great advice.

  • Hi i have a musk turtle and i am looking to get more i was wondering if you could give me the information on the guy that built your tank

    Thanks.

  • Looking for people to play with if interested add gamertag onebadboy96

  • Did you get the acrylic boxes made custom? I was almost thinking of buying a few acrylic shadow/display boxes and gluing their sides together with silicone to get a good overall size. What do you suggest?

  • @Ketchme17 yes, all those acrylic boxes are custom made by the same guy who made my aquarium.

  • I love your set up, well done!! I have read thru nearly every comment and I can't see anywhere where you say what thickness the acrylic is. Is it 5mm, 6mm or thicker?

We are looking at building a 8ftx3ftx3ft acrylic tank and using only 2ft for the water depth and remainder 1ft for a basking dock. What thickness of acrylic would u say is good to use for this size tank? Thanks for your help:)

  • @Shazvana I did not build my tank, had an aquarium shop do that. I won't give advice on building a tank, not something you want to guess at. My tank is 5/16" in thickness but water depth is only 12". Best to get some expert advice on that before you start building.

  • @BauriBob Thanks for your reply. Yes I can understand why you don't wish to advise and that's fine:) Thanks for giving us the width of the acrylic, it helps to gauge what we will be needing to accommodate such a big tank. I know I will use your ideas of a shallow dock and dry dock and we will build them into our tank design from day dot while we have that chance. Our turtle will spend the rest of his life in this tank, so we need it to be exactly right from day dot. I love all your videos!!!!

  • Way too much trouble. This is why I keep my turtles in a shoebox.

  • My dad loves your set up!!!

  • Freaky shirt! :p lol

  • This is amazing! Great job! I absolutely love what you've done with the tank! <3

  • Thank you, there was lots of ideas and i'll be sure to use some in future tanks for my turtle :)

  • What are the dimensions?

  • @Themotherofhim220 the tank is 8 feet long, 3 feet wide, 17 inches high.

  • Very nice...Thank you for the awesome ideas...my turtle and I are grateful

  • thank you for all the great ideas! i hope to be using these techniques soon.

  • Wow I'm usein some of ur ideas thnx for makeing this vid

  • How do you clean a big tank?

  • @DavidAlvarezMusic full cleaning and water change about once a year. Otherwise I do twice weekly partial water changes, siphon debris that collects in the corner boxes around the wet/dry plumbing. Clean off the algae growing on the sides of the tank every couple weeks.

  • @DavidAlvarezMusic full cleaning and water change about once a year. Otherwise I do twice weekly partial water changes, siphon debris that collects in the corner boxes around the wet/dry plumbing. Clean off the algae growing on the sides of the tank every couple weeks.

  • how much did all of that cost i am thinking of getting a few turtles

  • @bigfoot643 plenty but I don't remember the exact cost. The price of acrylic goes up and down with the price of oil. Best you call some aquarium shops in your area for estimates based on the size of tank you want to build. A cheaper route would be glasscages, they make acrylic tanks. Check out their web page and see what they are charging.

  • Holy sh** thats amazing!

  • @JJAM1999 No, had a local aquarium shop build it for me.

  • Where can I find a sandbox like that??

  • @demetrip I have all my trays/boxes built by the same guy who made my aquarium.

  • If I were a turtle I'd defffffff wanna live in ur tank!!!

  • What gallon tank is that

  • @TheZack01065 about 250 gallons if the tank were filled to the top. 8 feet long, 3 feet wide, 17" high.

  • Why type of turtles do u have r they must turtles?

  • @TheZack01065 currently I only have mud turtles.

  • do the plants help keep your tank clean and if so what kind of plants should i get do have that in my tank

  • @Ispy157 I'm not a plant expert. Plants do remove some nitrates but you would need a lot of plants to really make a difference. I prefer anacharis (string plants), camboba, hornwort plants.

  • i just got my turtles yesterday and i have them in a giant plastic that u use to store foor in... ur tank is amazing!

  • how big is your tank
