I haven't listened to this for at least six months... And I don't know how I've lasted that long! This is amazing. It's one of the most honest forms of music out there. Awesome!
Incredible sound coming from them fingers.. I loved it. I am currently looking to get a dobro to learn on and play my first instrument. Any suggestions? anyone? for a first timer like me?
I play a dobro, had one built in NC. I have only been playing a year,,,, it sounds like you are tuned to D. Could you post some playing and info on playing into minor chords and placement of picks and bar....
You are really good on the dobro. My dad played one for many years. The first one he bought in a pawn show for about 30 dollars. It was an ugly red color and played like a 30 dollar dobro. Later my brother bought dad a Dobro brand and shipped it to him. He enjoyed playing it so much. Never got really good, but I can still remember him playing.
I would say G tuning, the tune is basically played in D on the 7th fret, the open strings of the G tuning are very useful playing scales. This video showed me how it's done.
Great Tune! Any recommendations for a beginning Dobro player? I've been picking on my own but I've realized I need to get some kind of Video or Book. What have you used or did you learn by ear?
Yes. I just got a starter Dobro (Morgan Monroe-Squarneck) I've been sitting in at jam sessions at my local Blue Grass Parlor just to get a feel for it. I've been playing traditional guitar styles for years and I'm ready for a change. I saw Jerry Douglas play with Allison Krauss and fell in love with the instrument. He played a 20 minute solo while the rest of the band went on intermission.
That's a beautiful song. I bet it'd sound just incredible if it was studio-recorded with a bit of reverb there. Nice playing, and it's going in my favourites!
thanks Neal, you have a nice guitar there is it a dobro squareneck or what? I'm getting into lap style just got a baby cole clark, its fun, but i think i want a dobro now!

Hey, could i take an old 50$ steel string, buy a metal resonator, cut a whole in the old guitar, and put the resonator in?
the pre-made ones are very expensive, and i am very poor....
redking15ca 4 years ago
I wouldn't recomend it. It would probably start to split especially after you've cut a hole in it. cheers

hmm... just an idea... they have them for sale on ebay...
thanks for the advice!
