Baklava is a popular dessert not only in Greece & Turkey ! It's very well known all over the Levant (Syria ,Jordan ,Palestine & Lebanon). So, not only in Greece & Turkey !
If you really want to be accurate and technical, Baklava is Chinese, not Greek or Turkish. The earliest recipe for it was found in documents from the 13th century Yuan dynasty that consisted of paper thing dough (phylo), honey, nuts, and layered upon eachother.
8DLULWUT. You can hear in the video that the 18% of Baklava export is going to Greece from turkey hahaha. I think the Baklava that you eating is also from Turkey.
Who cares where it is from? The Greeks make great Baklava, the Turks make great baklava, the Arabs make great baklava, the Iranians.....you see where this is leading.
baklava" may come from the Mongolian root baγla- 'to tie, wrap up, pile up' composed with the Turkic verbal ending -v; baγla- itself in Mongolian is a Turkic loanword
@8DLULWUT Its a ancient turkish dish. I wouldn't say that the greeks stole the idea, but yeah they got inspired and now their making their own aswell.

I ve been working as a waiter in a top london hotel, and seen a lot of desserts but I do say baklava and kunefe are the best ones... the westerns usually eats chocolate stuff, when you ask them how our desserts are they say they are so sweet cant eat!!! It is maybe a difference of taste...
can someone please help? on the videos the baklava is green but when i look at sites for how to make it, its brown. what is the difference, how do u make it green? thank you
It´s green, because we use the world´s best Gaziantep pistachios instead of hazel nuts. It makes our baklava the best and most delicious of the world. Of course made in Gaziantep!
@samanthafuge1986 The green stuff is blended/crushed pistachio, while the brown stuff you are refferring to is blended/crushed walnuts. I hope i answered your question :) Bon appetit!
For those of us with celiac disease (cannot eat wheat, rye or barley), it is possible to roll filo using gluten free flours. If you would like to see how it is done check video from dnworks (that's me)
You introduced it to Greece, so it's not as if they stole it. I can tell you something else which was stolen, however, Syrmna, Constantinopolis, Cyprus, you alphabet...list goes on! ;)
I agree my friend we introduced it...but lets not get into politics..greek nation is a wonderful nation. i love greeks soo very much...I have greek friends which I would not change for anyone...baklava is own by both country turkey and greece...you have also every right to say it is ours because we lived together for hundreds of years. I honestly think its not turku=ish or greek i think it is arabic. peace.
@bornova73 The big difference between Greek & Turkish Baklava is that the Greeks add Honey in addition to the sugar syrup which makes it extremely sweet and a bit heavy. The Turkish approach, uses only sugar syrup and depending on the amount of syrup, it can be what they call "dry" or "wet" Baklava. Due to the high content of sugar Baklava keeps for a very long time, and does not have to be refrigerated. Hence, in hot arid areas this keeps and travels well.
