I'm not prejudiced against people with disabilities but I don't think that visually impaired people should drive taxis or judge boxing matches. Likewise, I don't think that people who are mentally retarded should necessarily be working as brain surgeons or in other areas where acute cognitive function is essential. Clearly, at least one of the retardeds is not fit to judge boxing matches, either, but I don't think we should be prejudiced against all of them because of it.

I disagreed with the judges. I had Sergio Martinez winning the first fight due to cleaner shots, the more telling blows landed throughout the fight. I was disappointed especially considering that Martinez got screwed in the previous fight against Kermit Cintron. I was glad when he later won the title from Kelly Pavick and for the successful title defense in the rematch with Paul Williams. I felt it was justice long overdue.

judges are picked by the promoter, most times promoters only stage fights in their own country and represent fighters from that same country.
this leads to " home town decisions", it is unfortunate and it makes boxing look very bad.
a unbiased judgin system based on power punches/jabs landed would be ideal, but i dont see it happening.
therefore the sport that is the passion of my life gets dragged through the gutter so a promoter keeps his drawcard boxers record with a 0 in the loss column

After re-watching this fight several times, Williams deserved to win on points. Even though I'm a big fan of sergio martinez, and he did most of the serious damage, Williams came back in the middle rounds doing just enough to edge out 115/113. This was one of the best fights I've ever seen.
Can't wait for the rematch. Martinez put Kelly Pavlik through the meat grinder in April, and Williams looked a off his game in the opening rounds of the freakshow fight with Cintron.

Nope, I am a fan of boxing, in fact I appreciate skills over certain boxers. You must hate Mayweather then, because Mayweather is the king of one punch and then grab and clinch. Awesome analysis. I was frkn pissed as well. This is the kind of crud that turns me off of Boxing at times, though I think fans know who won this fight. I like both fighters in different ways, but I was amazed at all of the power punches Martinez landed. I had Martinez by one point or at worst a draw which everyone would accept me thinks. But 3 American judges tells you there is far too much dirty money in this sport, trying to keep the big promos in the US. Boxing is after all business first!

Great review, I thank you. Here's what I think, bottom line: One of the best fight's I've ever seen. Evenly matched, masterfully executed by both combatants. Sergio landed the better shots, Paul Williams lasted to the champion rounds and kept fighting whereas Sergio was exhausted (but still managed to land good shots). 119-110!?! Utter bullshit!!! A fight of this caliber deserves better than that! That's it, I'm out!

Sergio expected it. He was robbed even worse in the Cintron fight. He knocked him the ref counted to 10, then he reversed the decision. They went the distance and they scored it a draw instead of Martinez winning the clear UD, hell the clear KO that he should have. Hopefully he will get a fair shake Saturday against Pavlik.

Paul won the fight IMO..Look, Martinez hit Williams with good shots, plain and simple. I judged the fight based on who controlled the MAJORITY of the round, each round. I felt that most peeps who felt like Martinez won based their belief on the fact that Martinez landed dramatic, hard, good shots per round, and those shots. But if you watch the fight again you will see that Williams may not have thrown the "sexy" punches, but he controlled rounds. either way, great fight, bullshit score
I saw it the same way. Funny thing about that is in the Mayweather/Castillo fight I saw it the opposite way. Mayweather's dramatic punches persuaded me better than Castillo's many, yet unattractive punches.

I cant give a round to a fighter just because he landed like 9 hard shots as opposed to the other fighter pressing the action, punching and moving forward. If Martinez REALLY hurt Williams, to the point where he stopped punching and was visibly hurt, Id give Martinez the round. Although MArtinez had the hard shots, Williams had the more effective shots and he kept rounds in his favor
@crankyboiy Well not necessarily, it depends on the judge and what they are looking for from a specific fighter, and varying on the fight they will look for certain things, now this fight in particular, the judges know that paul williams likes to throw at least 100 punches per round, that's how he controls the rounds with his massive amount of punching, now if sergio martinez had put a halt to those punches and made williams fight defensively then martinez would have won those rounds.
@crankyboiy Now in this fight if martinez wants to win, he has to stop williams punch output by giving him shots that none the less make williams fight defensively, cause everyone knows that williams fights offensively and will throw a lot of punches every round, now I think that the 119-110 scorecard was completely wrong, but williams won the fight cause he fought his fight and sergio was constantly looking for that counter punch to knock him out.

SM lost primarily b/c it doesnt look good 2 judges 2 fight running backwards & being stalked the entire fight. Plus though SM landed several clean punches, after the 2nd round very few of them seemed 2 have any effect on PW. PW neva slowed down the entire fight despite SM shots. I just seen the highlights i didnt purchase the fight because i have a love hate relationshiip with boxing like i think a lot of folks do but anywho i dnt think the clip i saw was one sided either because based on the video it was apperent that Martinez did his home work on Paul Williams and got a A+ yet failed do to bs politics, i mean fuck it, its in the books already not much you can do now but this right here is why the sport of boxing is on a tramendous down slide.
It was a very close fight. I thought Williams won because of the KD. I think it's perfectly acceptable to me if Martinez was declared the winner too. The 119-110 convinced me the winner of this match was predetermined. It's disgusting.

Martinez clearly landed the harder cleaner shots and at a higher percentage. That being said Martinez didn't win enough rounds. The rounds Martinez won he won without dispute. The rounds Williams won Martinez still landed shots but didn't land enough in those close rounds. The middle rounds and the championship rounds is when Williams stole the fight. Martinez tanked after 10 and lost the fight. Bruises and cuts don't count in scoring a fight. Martinez lost just like clottey, he tanked in 11&12.
I haven't seen the entire fight but I after seeing the highlights I can tell it was close. I think it's great that there are people out there who care enough about the sport of boxing to speak out against injustices such as poor judging and I hope you can help make a dent in changing things. 119-110 is absolutely awful and is a disgrace to what I felt was fight of the year. I thought Williams won simply because he won the last 2 rounds. But c'mon! the fight could of gone either way. All year these judges have had awful scores like mallignaggi diaz and even the one of the cotto clotey cards was off and im a huge cotto fan. but this was fight of the year. the only other fight that could compete was cotto clottey but i like this one better. lots of passion and alot of rock hard chins!

judges are picked by the promoter, most times promoters only stage fights in their own country and represent fighters from that same country.
this leads to " home town decisions", it is unfortunate and it makes boxing look very bad.
a unbiased judgin system based on power punches/jabs landed would be ideal, but i dont see it happening.
therefore the sport that is the passion of my life gets dragged through the gutter so a promoter keeps his drawcard boxers record with a 0 in the loss column

After re-watching this fight several times, Williams deserved to win on points. Even though I'm a big fan of sergio martinez, and he did most of the serious damage, Williams came back in the middle rounds doing just enough to edge out 115/113. This was one of the best fights I've ever seen.
Can't wait for the rematch. Martinez put Kelly Pavlik through the meat grinder in April, and Williams looked a off his game in the opening rounds of the freakshow fight with Cintron.

Nope, I am a fan of boxing, in fact I appreciate skills over certain boxers. You must hate Mayweather then, because Mayweather is the king of one punch and then grab and clinch. Paul Williams is not going to ever knock out a hardass in Sergio, there is no way ever. That is just plain retarted to think so. Awesome analysis. I was frkn pissed as well. This is the kind of crud that turns me off of Boxing at times, though I think fans know who won this fight. I like both fighters in different ways, but I was amazed at all of the power punches Martinez landed. I had Martinez by one point or at worst a draw which everyone would accept me thinks. But 3 American judges tells you there is far too much dirty money in this sport, trying to keep the big promos in the US. Boxing is after all business first!

But I saw Williams win by 7 rounds to 5
And he won based on points, definitely not by who hit the hardest.

i had it 115-113 Martinez. A draw or 115-113 Williams was acceptable though I'd disagree, there were some really tight rounds in there. Pierre Benoist must be a spastic to have given Martinez 1 round. The guy should never judge again.

Great review, I thank you. Here's what I think, bottom line: One of the best fight's I've ever seen. Evenly matched, masterfully executed by both combatants. Sergio landed the better shots, Paul Williams lasted to the champion rounds and kept fighting whereas Sergio was exhausted (but still managed to land good shots). 119-110!?! Utter bullshit!!! A fight of this caliber deserves better than that! That's it, I'm out!

Sergio expected it. He was robbed even worse in the Cintron fight. He knocked him the ref counted to 10, then he reversed the decision. They went the distance and they scored it a draw instead of Martinez winning the clear UD, hell the clear KO that he should have. Hopefully he will get a fair shake Saturday against Pavlik.

Paul won the fight IMO..Look, Martinez hit Williams with good shots, plain and simple. I judged the fight based on who controlled the MAJORITY of the round, each round. I felt that most peeps who felt like Martinez won based their belief on the fact that Martinez landed dramatic, hard, good shots per round, and those shots. But if you watch the fight again you will see that Williams may not have thrown the "sexy" punches, but he controlled rounds. either way, great fight, bullshit score

I cant give a round to a fighter just because he landed like 9 hard shots as opposed to the other fighter pressing the action, punching and moving forward. If Martinez REALLY hurt Williams, to the point where he stopped punching and was visibly hurt, Id give Martinez the round. Although MArtinez had the hard shots, Williams had the more effective shots and he kept rounds in his favor

@crankyboiy Well not necessarily, it depends on the judge and what they are looking for from a specific fighter, and varying on the fight they will look for certain things, now this fight in particular, the judges know that paul williams likes to throw at least 100 punches per round, that's how he controls the rounds with his massive amount of punching, now if sergio martinez had put a halt to those punches and made williams fight defensively then martinez would have won those rounds.

Martinez clearly landed the harder cleaner shots and at a higher percentage. That being said Martinez didn't win enough rounds. The rounds Martinez won he won without dispute. The rounds Williams won Martinez still landed shots but didn't land enough in those close rounds. The middle rounds and the championship rounds is when Williams stole the fight. Martinez tanked after 10 and lost the fight. Bruises and cuts don't count in scoring a fight. Martinez lost just like clottey, he tanked in 11&12.

A fight that good and even should have been a draw and Ledderman has shown herself to be one of the best judges around.Even the 115-113 Williams score was understandable.Forget 119 for either fighter.If I had to pick a winner it goes like this.After watching the fight the first time I had the same opinion as JR, Sergio deserved the win.That was probably because I expected him to get dominated. After a second watching I think Pwill pulled it out,landing more punches and being the aggressor.

bugger whoppin hmm....and waht about the solid knockdown by sergio in round one?....i had martinez winning 115-113.......snot punching, comon dude if youre a boxing fan you already would know about martinez, he has fought on HBO once or twice already and looks really good, he is from Argentina, get your facts together.......a rematch will not translate into a beating for martinez dude, you have to know that styles make fights,and martinez will always give williams a fight, either way ....

I had it 115-113. Last round was really thight, and giving that round to Sergio would have made it 114-114. In the end 115-113 is right.
119-110 is way of!!! They should take his license away from him!!!!

119-110 is absolutely awful and is a disgrace to what I felt was fight of the year. I thought Williams won simply because he won the last 2 rounds. But c'mon! the fight could of gone either way. All year these judges have had awful scores like mallignaggi diaz and even the one of the cotto clotey cards was off and im a huge cotto fan. but this was fight of the year. the only other fight that could compete was cotto clottey but i like this one better. lots of passion and alot of rock hard chins!

If i was Paul, i wouldn't want Hop but then again Hop feels as if he has seen some bad judging against him & maybe he wouldn't want to take a chance on that with Paul. I see now some openings with Paul. He is very good but i see now, not unbeatable. What is bad, is if you say Paulie, Funeka, Sergio, if you do not win by ko, we gonna cheat you & make you lose. That hurts the sport as they are boxers & not Aerrola/Hatton fighters. I believe if Sergio had pulled an A. Ward, he may have koed Paul.

You are so right. I actually felt Mart won 115-113 but if Paul would have won that close, i would have been ok or a draw. I thought Paul might get a draw as he came forward & tried hard the last 2 rds but yes i felt Sergio won. I think now, i understand the power of a promoter. They are going to make Funeka sign with "the man" or say no, you won't win because we will cheat you. It has been some bad ones lately. It hurts boxing. If i was Pac/FM, i would be getting da money right. Pass some out.

Boxing Is Bullshit! First Malinaggi got rapped an now Martinez. The commentators kept brining up that point that the judges were American. So fucking what is a sport there should clearly be a winner and a loser not who's your favorite is or who's from your country leave that to the fans.
