Mechanicville, NY had one of these for years on the town hall as a fire alarm. When I was 13, I was riding my bike across a bridge over the Hudson in that town, not far from the town hall, when the thing went off to signal noon. Scared the livin' $%#^@ out of me!! Just about jumped off my bike & into the river!! Didn't think such a relatively small horn could be so freakin' loud!
@KnittingPasta They are both powered by air pressure/volume (some horns also use steam), a horn has a diaphragm/disc that vibrates creating the sound (being pushed and released by air), a Diaphone has a piston (usually made of aluminum) that goes back and forth creating its sound, because of this, the Diaphone is much more efficient.
It never sounded THAT good when it was up on the Municipal Bldg. Even with its mate - sounded like an 18-wheeler on steriods - never had that classic Gamewell "bark". I guess they were giving all the air to the T-Bolt (laughs)....
I was a junior lightkeeper in the 60's. This "takes me back". As much as I love that sound, when it went on for days at a time it became quit tiresome.
I love it! And I'd love to borrow it and welcome the next freight train engineer who lays on his train's horn as he passes through town at 2 AM! If nothing else, he'd definitely remember need to change his shorts afterwards! lol
These must be common around NY, I am from Buffalo, and I have herd this sound in several locations in combination with a siren to alert voulenteer firefighters. As a young kid I Hated the sound of this thing, it scared the crap out of me and made me feel horrible.
I not really like the sound/tone of the horn, but the soundpressure and echo are awesome! :D
The audio quality itself is also very good, you're pretty serious about that and I like that! I hate crappy video's which are about recording of noise and sound ;-)
damn that would be sweet on my Ford when i drive to work over the autobahn lol...Big M you are living dangerous hope your testings will not cause a land slide ;)
yup, me too. I was at a red light listening to the traffic report with my windows open, if you were outside the car you can barely hear it, then another car stopped next to me playing some rap crap. I turned up the volume a bit to hear the traffic report and the asshole turned his volume way up. I would have like to have this fog horn pointed towards him on full volume.
For this diaphone demo, I had two 33 gallon tanks and a 12 gallon tank all linked together with 1" piping. That's a total of 78 gallons! Makes for some good consistent blasts...
that sounded awesome. And you reminded me, I need to check in on a few I know are out of service, and 2 more I recently discovered, that are most likely in service.
Adam, The echo up here is incredible! It was hard to get these recording partly due to the long lasting echo. A lot of motorcycles ride through here and the echo of the bikes last for a while. I have to time it just right to get my recordings. "Echo point" is about a 2 hour drive round trip for me.
Thanks for the compliments Raoul, Sorry I did not get a chance to count the echoes bouncing against the rocks and mountains. In person I timed the last echo with the long blast drom the diaphone. The longest echo lasted for 56 seconds!
The guy looks like Taz from TNA.

GRRREAT!!! Amazing sound.
Bumping against the rocks, the echoes create beautiful harmonics. They're nicer than the sound of the horn itelf.
Have you counted how many times they bounce?
Thanks for sharing.
