this was a beautifull documentary and the music is just beautiful and really suits the moment!! astonishing!! i hope to go to the northern lights in the next 2 or 3 years..
I am from Norway, and i live under the Northern Lights. I am still amazed by the Aurora and how she magical casts a spell over my country during the winter<3
hehe! Well, its only a thing adults scare kids with, "You shall not wave or whistle to the Aurora, then she'll come and take you", its an old saying that the ligths are the reflections of young womens souls, and the young womans has to eat childrens souls to stay young :P
I've seen the Northern lights this year in Tromse. Such a wonderfully eerie site to behold. Well worth the plance ticket from Oslo. Everybody should see this before they die.
We've just returned from Tromso, Norway and saw the Aurora for the first time. It was an astonishing experience and we fully intend to return. Thankyou for posting this. It was Joanna's programme that prompted us to go to Norway in the first place.
The music is by Grieg (famous Norwegian composer) and is from Peer Gynt - I don't know any more detail than that.
I made my 10 year old son watch this - he wasn't keen to begin with but really enjoyed it, and when it came to this clip with the lights he was just stunned.
This was a fantastic piece of television. I stumbled across it but I loved every minute. Some parts were very funny (getting ready for bed in the Ice Hotel), some parts very cute (the 3 year old who taught Joanna to ride a motorised sleigh before he went to Kindergarden) and other parts very moving, especially during the light show. Joanna is a fantastic actress and presenter but also I feel a very real natural person. I thought the whole program was stunning. Thank you Joanna.
My daughter and I have booked a 3 hr flight for the Northern Lights on 24 February - we get a reception from an astronomer first - then we fly from Birmingham Airport at 9.00pm and hope we hit the Lights!!! Can't wait!!! Thanks to this programme - we have to rotate seats so everyone gets a window view!!!!
It did seem as if the lights had put on a special display for JL. Even now, as I watch this video, I'm getting goose-bumps. The Grieg music in the background seems to add a sort of ghostly quality too.
I wish i recorded this. i saw it a couple of times on TV... i've been to the north of norway, but during the summer and it never goes dark at that time of year.. one day i will go back and see the northern lights for myself :)
I saw this on TV a few weeks ago, it was the most extraordinarily beautiful and moving thing. I don't know which moved me most, the Northern Lights or the childlike joy and wonder in the narrator's voice. The lights seemed to be alive, like a playful spirit showing off specially for its long lost childhood friend. JL spoke about seeing pictures of the lights in her nursery books and now, amazingly, here it was, come to life. What beauty.
Thank you!. I'm so glad to know it's as true as in the programme. I live on Shetland so we see them in winter but not as good as this. They are very beautiful here on Shetland but not quite as good as in the programme. :)
Thats right arv308, you can beleive it :) And as the photographer of the Light with Joanna I also need to say, its absolutly true. Kjetil Skogli, Tromsø
Help, it's so beautiful and I want to believe it but it looks a little fake:(. It looks as if Joanna Lumley has been superimposed and also she appears to be looking in the wrong direction at times.....
I saw La Lumley interviewed about the programme before it aired & she said the Northern Lights were notoriously difficult to capture on film, & they had to do things with the camera speed, exposure etc in order to get a halfway decent picture.
they had to take pic by pic, with a highspeed camera i guess. cause it's so hard to film it. or something like that.. that's why they got help from a guy in tromsø... just read it!;)

I'm deeply envious, thrillable! Why do the locals say you should not wave to the lights?

Vikings saw this all the time. Imagine what effect it would have on them with the little knowledge of physics that they had.

Janusha, they probably attributed it to the booze they'd pillaged on their raiding expeditions:)

I thought the same, but having seen other film of northern lights, I think with a good enough camera you can get it this clearly.

Music is Solveig's Song from Greig's music for 'Peer Gynt'. There are some good versions on Youtube.

thanks for the info. I already thought it must've been Grieg, but I didn't know exactly which piece of music it was.
