Wow..... thank you so much!!! I've learned at last how to use it! I kinda freaked out when all the watercolor started to spread by itself but i know now ho it works!
@fariz90@159tony I use watercolor paper. I usually stick with big brand names. Good watercolor paper is expensive easily $2 - $6 a sheet depending on size - if your paper wrinkles it usually means you use to much water or your paper is not thick enough
From 12:17 you skipped a a step that is important to me. There was places where unpainted paper showed then at 12:18-19 the painting is totally complete with no unpainted paper showing and the colors belnded very nicely. What was the step you skipped that 'completed' the painting? I want so badly to be good at watercolring, see. So that's why it's so important to me to know. Please respond! Thank you!
It can be such an unattractive medium (mostly due to its unpredictable nature). I find it adds the needed feeling for the surreal and the fantasy, but oils can just create a much more beautiful portrait.
My mother loves water color and i wanted to do something for her for her birthday. I was so afraid to even try but your tutorials have really helped along with a lot of practice lol. Thank you very much
I'm loving your videos, especially the tree tutorial. I was having a hard time with mixing the proper colors to get just the right shade of brown- so I just started using brown, which put me off painting them altogether. Regarding brushes, I've always found freshly plucked hair from the heads of my virgin servant girls works best. :)
i love your videos, and thanks so much for sharing your knowledge...im an aspiring watercolorist, coming from the world of graphite...ive gotten pretty good with that media...but i wish i could paint well..anyway my question is: what brush hairs do you think are best for watercolors, and what paper...? :) thanks
i am actually wanting to learn how to use watercolors and gouache I draw all the time and i want to be better all around. my question is what kinds of brushes and size of brushed do i need to have as a watercolor survival kit so to say.
@sheldonsartacademy i love this video and unlike the other art acadamies yourvideos are easy to follow like my comment for first comment ever on youtube keep em comin
I don't think you are snobby at all. It truly makes a difference when you use quality supplies versus cheap. Cheap supplies make your work look amateur and they make it harder to paint. You can see the difference in paintings that are done with a really high quality materials.
his voice isn't annoying, what's wrong with you all. And you think he wont read this and feel hurt? Why not keep your mouth closed and keep your opinions to yourself. You taught me a lot about water color, more than any other video I've found. Thank you so much! and your voice isn't remotely annoying. Keep doing what you do.
i have a question do you have to be able to draw to be able to paint because i can paint i just dont sketch it out o.o my art teachers a bitch and tells me its how im comfortable and im like thats no help at all i need an answer .-. because idk what im gonna do because i got into the goveners school art thing and im lost O.O if i get up there and like idk what im doing ima be pissed and embarrassed o_o
I was under the wrong impression for most of my life that watercolors were some kind of useless children's toy. Thank you for opening my eyes to the beauty.
I'm starting to get into water colours myself, though I have to ask, is there any specific type of pencil I should be using before hand? I have pencils galore, so I shall experiment, but thought I'd ask anyway. :)
I am curious about the white paint for the highlights... doesn't seem like it would be watercolor because then it would soak in. What paint did you use and/or how did you use it to get the definite highlights?
I took notice of those Windsor-Newton brushes as I was watching this video earlier today. Later, I found myself in an art store and coincidentally bumped into the Windsor Newton display. All I have to say is: At that price, you'd better use them!
I feel liked I have learned more in this 13 min preview than in all my art classes in school. The way you are talking and demonstrating the magic of watercolours is so poetic and honest - I simply can not thank you enough for sharing!
After you finish the painting and you do the highlights do you use acrylic paint? Im 17 and am quite good at drawing but i want to start painting ive been watching a lot of your videos and decided to start with watercolors mostly because they look fun
@MegaAnabanana I know I heard it too XD hehe great job on the painting, also, I liked the way you chatted through it so ignore the comments saying not to :).
I like this! But, it's okay to be a snob about art materials....some people use the same cheap stuff and wonder why they are not obtaining good results. You get the results you get mostly because of your talent, but partly because of the materials you use, Love your painting!
You really need to stop talking about yourself when you're doing a how to video, especially since the first four minutes weren't necessary at all. They could have been a little footnote in the description bar.
Sheldon, You are enormously talented! How can I avoid over-working my water color paintings? They get to a certain point - unfinished - and then a few brush strokes later they lose the light and spontaneity. I have struggled with this. Any advice on when a painting is done? Thanks for your help.
i have a weird question.with acrylic it takes massive amounts of light glazes to get realism which takes a long time but its the same with oils and the out come is great. is it the same with water colors? i have no idea if water color paper can withstand over 80 sets of light washes so i plan to use canvas or plywood. i have seen some paintings in water color that look the same as oils do. do have any advice on how to approach his?
Please tell me what you mean by scrubbing. I've read a few watercolour books and seen a lot of videos but I've never head that term applied to anything other than pots and pans.

So
Here we go
Paint the water color shapes down, fun and loose.
Then with a stiff oil brush scrub the paint and move it
around.
Work back and forth with new paint until your happy.
Hope this helps
