  • That is amazing!

  • watercolor, watercolor, watercolor, watercolor's so awesome, really gotta start use my set of watercolor

  • this is so helpful to me, thank you so much :)

  • Wow..... thank you so much!!! I've learned at last how to use it! I kinda freaked out when all the watercolor started to spread by itself but i know now ho it works!

    :)

  • would you be able to tell me where you got your case for your brushes? I've been looking for something like it for a while

  • WHAT TYPE OF PAPER U USE?

  • @fariz90 @159tony I use watercolor paper. I usually stick with big brand names. Good watercolor paper is expensive easily $2 - $6 a sheet depending on size - if your paper wrinkles it usually means you use to much water or your paper is not thick enough

  • @sheldonsartacademy thank you

  • I need an answer..what kind of paper this is that you're using..or what kind of paper must i use to prevent the paper to start wrinkle up?

  • From 12:17 you skipped a a step that is important to me. There was places where unpainted paper showed then at 12:18-19 the painting is totally complete with no unpainted paper showing and the colors belnded very nicely. What was the step you skipped that 'completed' the painting? I want so badly to be good at watercolring, see. So that's why it's so important to me to know. Please respond! Thank you!

  • @nightskymine the entire video, can be purchased at on my website its video 47 and is about 58 min long

  • It can be such an unattractive medium (mostly due to its unpredictable nature). I find it adds the needed feeling for the surreal and the fantasy, but oils can just create a much more beautiful portrait.

  • lol he keeps saying thats water colour i think we already know by know plus keep looking out for him saying pretty cool huh lol constantly

  • @ryanhazley123 Did you click this video to learn, or tell how someone shouldn't speak?

  • My mother loves water color and i wanted to do something for her for her birthday. I was so afraid to even try but your tutorials have really helped along with a lot of practice lol. Thank you very much

  • he's hilarious XD

  • should you always use a "water mask" when you paint portraits?

  • this has reawakened something in me. How much do pieces like that go for?

  • how do you create your skin tones and etc, or is an special tone of water colors?

  • I'm loving your videos, especially the tree tutorial. I was having a hard time with mixing the proper colors to get just the right shade of brown- so I just started using brown, which put me off painting them altogether. Regarding brushes, I've always found freshly plucked hair from the heads of my virgin servant girls works best. :)

  • hahaha jokes on you

    Shaco the Demonjester???

  • 9:24 I lol'd

  • i love your videos, and thanks so much for sharing your knowledge...im an aspiring watercolorist, coming from the world of graphite...ive gotten pretty good with that media...but i wish i could paint well..anyway my question is: what brush hairs do you think are best for watercolors, and what paper...? :) thanks

  • "Hahahahaha, Jokes On You-ou." Lol.

  • hey sheldon i love ur vids and can u do some more watercolor vids thanks

    love the vid

  • baaam shake it!

  • I love listening to you teach ^^ Its informative AND humourous. Thank you ^^

  • i am actually wanting to learn how to use watercolors and gouache I draw all the time and i want to be better all around. my question is what kinds of brushes and size of brushed do i need to have as a watercolor survival kit so to say.

  • i like this painting

  • What is the little travel brush that you said is completely synthetic and performs well? (around 4 mins in)

  • I have only one question. My art teachers have always told me that you shouldn't use white, when you draw with watercolors. Is that true?

  • Nice work like it

  • nice!.. i actually have another question lol how do you feel about dr.martens watercolors? have you ever used them?

  • what did you use as a highlight pigment? awesome vid by the way!

  • @KABLE999 Every now and then I use a little bit of white gouache

  • @sheldonsartacademy i love this video and unlike the other art acadamies yourvideos are easy to follow like my comment for first comment ever on youtube keep em comin

  • your really good i can draw but i can't paint

  • the water is doing all the work :3

  • I don't think you are snobby at all. It truly makes a difference when you use quality supplies versus cheap. Cheap supplies make your work look amateur and they make it harder to paint. You can see the difference in paintings that are done with a really high quality materials.

  • is that hot or cold pressed paper?

  • It's so much fun painting in watercolor

  • "thats watercolor"

    NOPE CHUCK TESTA

  • EPIC!I made my own travel kit!

  • i dont care about your brushes!!! start painting!!

  • half of the the vid is about brushes... lol.. :P

  • "don't ever give up the opportunity to play with a wet area" this wisdom transcends art.

  • how long does it take actually?

  • My teachers say not to use white but I think this demo is exactly how to use it, like salt.

  • informatively, this video is nice but the end result was ugly. doesnt look at all realistic to me at least...

  • at the end for the highlights, is that oilcolor white?

  • *looks at your left hand* it would seem that you are married.. am i right?

  • what the?? are u serious? its watercolour!!!!!!!!!!11

  • ur awesome,.,.,..,.,,.,.supppppppppperbbbbbbbbbbbb

  • like omg welcome to watercolor!

  • his voice isn't annoying, what's wrong with you all. And you think he wont read this and feel hurt? Why not keep your mouth closed and keep your opinions to yourself. You taught me a lot about water color, more than any other video I've found. Thank you so much! and your voice isn't remotely annoying. Keep doing what you do.

  • i have a question do you have to be able to draw to be able to paint because i can paint i just dont sketch it out o.o my art teachers a bitch and tells me its how im comfortable and im like thats no help at all i need an answer .-. because idk what im gonna do because i got into the goveners school art thing and im lost O.O if i get up there and like idk what im doing ima be pissed and embarrassed o_o

  • I love your voice and personality - casual, friendly, humorous and down-to-earth

  • I was under the wrong impression for most of my life that watercolors were some kind of useless children's toy. Thank you for opening my eyes to the beauty.

  • Great vid but that voice is so annoying!

  • you sound a lot like sam rockwell

  • oh god. his voice is so irritating :(

  • omgosh

  • I love this guy!

  • @SnipRif

    I love you too

    Talk soon

    Shel

  • @sheldonsartacademy Love the tutorial. Can you take us through the colours you mixed for the basic face colour and shadows. Thanks

  • I never knew that Holbein made brushes. The Holbein company that makes watercolor paints is - despite the name - Japanese.

  • kk have fun with all ur brushes...

  • yeah ok step by step my butt

  • alex pardee steve urkel

  • very nice brushes, keep doing what you love -.-

  • I'm starting to get into water colours myself, though I have to ask, is there any specific type of pencil I should be using before hand? I have pencils galore, so I shall experiment, but thought I'd ask anyway. :)

  • @Catkeeper

I like to use a b and up

    Too soft can swear.

    Best of luck

    shel

  • @sheldonsartacademy what paper do you use? i was wondering cause your paint soaks so well on the paper.

  • love it :D

  • Yep

    I felt the same way.

Then I saw a Sargent show.

    He used lots of white

I use very little and try to not to use any at all.

I like to make a water mask.

    When unnecessary. I use gouache.

    Take care

    Sheldon

  • I am curious about the white paint for the highlights... doesn't seem like it would be watercolor because then it would soak in. What paint did you use and/or how did you use it to get the definite highlights?

  • dont ever give up the opportunity to play with a wet area...

  • Where can I get that palette? It's very handily small :)

  • What pencil did you use to draw her face? Thanks!

  • i will never use artist grade colors again, well... i will, but dammit, why are they toxic??

  • you could speed up this ,it would be more intresting :)

  • Thank you for this video! I like your style!

  • I took notice of those Windsor-Newton brushes as I was watching this video earlier today. Later, I found myself in an art store and coincidentally bumped into the Windsor Newton display. All I have to say is: At that price, you'd better use them!

  • snobbish video

  • you sound like John Malkovich

  • @ashnosx89 LOL -- I was thinking the same thing. He sounds like John Malkovich from the movie "Art School Confidential" or whatever the title was.

  • "This is watercolour!" You have inspired me...with your snobbish brushes! <3 haha love your tutorial (:

  • Great helped alot thanx but do you have to use water colour paper for this to work??

  • Your a snob with your brushes.

  • snob ass brush niggah

  • I feel liked I have learned more in this 13 min preview than in all my art classes in school. The way you are talking and demonstrating the magic of watercolours is so poetic and honest - I simply can not thank you enough for sharing!

  • I totally pirating this video lol (

    jokes)

  • After you finish the painting and you do the highlights do you use acrylic paint? Im 17 and am quite good at drawing but i want to start painting ive been watching a lot of your videos and decided to start with watercolors mostly because they look fun

  • What a brilliant video I learnt alot from this thanks.

  • What is your problem @ the shmucks bitchn. If you dont like the video bug off , no1 is forcing you to watch it.i thought the video was fine

  • @MegaAnabanana I know I heard it too XD hehe great job on the painting, also, I liked the way you chatted through it so ignore the comments saying not to :).

  • I like this! But, it's okay to be a snob about art materials....some people use the same cheap stuff and wonder why they are not obtaining good results. You get the results you get mostly because of your talent, but partly because of the materials you use, Love your painting!

  • That is beautiful, thank you.

  • don't worry about pirates your not that good

  • @syndrome1300 It's you're. And he's a great artist.

  • You really need to stop talking about yourself when you're doing a how to video, especially since the first four minutes weren't necessary at all. They could have been a little footnote in the description bar.

  • Ha ha ha ha, jokes on you xD

  • man this guy is friendly

  • Never paint with the colour white.

  • Have you written a book? That would be fantastic!

  • You could have painted a better looking woman.

  • ur hilarious =)

  • Sheldon, You are enormously talented! How can I avoid over-working my water color paintings? They get to a certain point - unfinished - and then a few brush strokes later they lose the light and spontaneity. I have struggled with this. Any advice on when a painting is done? Thanks for your help.

  • 1994....i was born in 1995 =)))

  • I have tried to consolidate as much as possible into our IT books and videos

Give them a try and then let us know if you have any questions.

    Talk soon

    Sheldon

  • @sheldonsartacademy Can you please tell me what medium you have done the drawing in to begin with? Is it graphite pencil?

  • Can you recommend books on drawing? It seems whatever I want to paint, it always end up sucking because I can't draw.

    Thank you!

  • i have a weird question.with acrylic it takes massive amounts of light glazes to get realism which takes a long time but its the same with oils and the out come is great. is it the same with water colors? i have no idea if water color paper can withstand over 80 sets of light washes so i plan to use canvas or plywood. i have seen some paintings in water color that look the same as oils do. do have any advice on how to approach his?

  • Great question!

    So

    Here we go

Paint the water color shapes down, fun and loose.

Then with a stiff oil brush scrub the paint and move it

    around.

Work back and forth with new paint until your happy.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks

    Sheldon

  • Please tell me what you mean by scrubbing. I've read a few watercolour books and seen a lot of videos but I've never head that term applied to anything other than pots and pans.

  • lol, i like that random wild fire comment.

  • pretty cool? this is so sick.

  • what do you mean by scrubbing it?

  • "...don't ever give up an opportunity to play with a 'wet' area..." lol:P

  • Comment removed

  • Sheldon u r a trip!

  • i have mastered everything expect potrait -_-

  • i own this same WN travel kit( i couldn't resist a 40% coupon), but i couldn't figure out the correct way to use it, so i haven't used it yet.. did you just remove the wrappers on the blocks and they just sit in their slots?

  • how.

  • very nice, im more of a sketch and pencil man but i want to make a conversion to paint to broaden my skills. thank you for your vid,it gave me a new view on how to approach the canvas, i feel like painting now. OH YEA.

  • Thanks for the demonstration. I'm learning. And the way you present your work makes me comfortable and hopeful. Don't grow up.

  • water and brush))) favourate words tonight

  • I hate the way americans say "water"... :):):) But the painting is beautifuly done so it's worth to watch it. :)

  • This is a great tutorial , but unfortunately like many tutorials on YT you dont say what make of paper yoy are using. I think it may be a not surface paper, but there are many different makes and qualities of paper available and all have there particular qualities .

  • WELCOME...visit GPABSKY.com website for the artist. ty!

  • Snob...??? No but FLAMIN"....that fits!

  • sheldon; question,if you please; in the watercolor portait you use a winsor newton pan set as opposed to tubes. I have the cotman set and it is a good set. however do you encourage your students on tubes or pans or do you feel its not important. Most teachers push tubes.

  • *Mortal Kombat voice* WELL DONE!!! FABULOUS!!!! MAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! lol

  • ▲ ▲

  • what is the brand of your brush?
