It is not about Michael Savage being a crazy ignorant fool, he is putting this social topic into layman terms of how he was brought up during this time as a child. I myself was never diagnose with autism, even though I had a learning disability (which was nonsense as I was getting older) and lost some of my hearing from an accident when I was 5 years old. So, Savage was generalizing his experiences between now and during his childhood, or at least something similar to it.
I am very familiar with an organization that works with children with autism. 2% of these kids are autistic, 98% are simply behaviorally challenged due to either inept parenting or environmental stresses imposed by the adults who raise them. Savage is making a point that should be well considered even if the delivery is over-dramatic. By the way, Bill Gates is has a form of autism known as Ausberger's Syndrome, so semantics are important when talking about such diseases.

As for who diagnoses my son? Help went through four sets of tests, three evaluations, and the final official diagnoses can from his pediatrician. This process took over a year. Thats a very short amount of time compared to a lot families out there. So I ask you, what do you believe the reason for all these diagnoses? Money? we receive none. (Only to pay for his school) money on their part? Out of that whole ordeal he saw her the very least. Because its a cool new band wagon to be on?
I am a conservative. I also have a 16yr. old with Autism. Out of my three children he is the best behaved. And also the most inteligent. He however has some serious disabilities. For one, he cannot read. But he can write an english report and get an A. Minus the badly mispelled words. He can also play a video game that requires reading and beat it in record time. I have Aspergers, which is basically a more mild form of Autism, so for me it is very hard to have a social connection with other people because my way of thinking is so different. Most Autistic Children tend be incredibly smart and knowledgable in certain areas and can excel in certain things that most people can't. However the Autism itself has alot negative affects on a child's immune system, socail learning and other various problems.

autism spectrum disorder- these disorders have been around for years- they are connecting the peices- they are neurological disorders that have connecters, and it is one out of every 99 boys. one out of 166 as a whole including boys and girls. can you have controlled diabetes (not requiring medication) and still be diabetic? same with autism. you do not have to be severely autistic, as with any disability, some are more severe than others.

that proves you do not know what you are talking about. they are not cured, their behavior is simply modified- probably using aba. behavior modification is used to control some of the symptoms- alcoholism for example- therapy does not cure the alcoholic, it helps to modify their behavior. no autism and alcoholism is not the same, but they are treated with therapy which helps control their behavior, not cured mind you
Your right, they are not cured because a lot of them didnt have it in the first place! One memorable child that my mom had to deal with used to throw himself into the middle of a group of kids. The group putz teachers and parents labeled him as autistic, and he was sent to my mom's class. Whenever he would pull a stunt like that, she would hold him by the wrists and march him up to the principal's office. After a few times of this, he stopped the behavior and is now "normal".

That's not true. Parents or Teachers can't diagnose a child as Autistic. They can suspect Autism, but not diagnose. Teachers can lead the parents in the right direction but only a team of doctors can diagnose a child as Autistic. The diagnosis requires many assessments and cannot be completed during a single behavioral observation. Yes teachers and parents can play a part in the diagnoses, but they still need that team of doctors.

Autistic kids do qualify for a social sercurity check once a month. But its not that they are getting paid for being Autistic, thats just not the right way to say that. These kids are entitled and who cares if they get that check once a month...

An Autistic child doesn't have to be in school or away from home to get a SSI check. I'm a mother of a Autistic child, who lives at home and isn't in school yet and he gets a SSI check. All Autistic kids qualify for SSI. I do know what I'm talking about. You want proof, do research, or call the SSI yourself.
Yes they do- but here is the thing. School criteria is different from medical- if your child is in school they want his last iep. if your child is hfasd then he may not qualify on the schools account though you have a medical diagnosis. ssi is not usually given to children with a school dd with an exceptionality in two or less areas. when a child is on ssi with asd, therapy runs a min 400 a mo with ssi being 300 so it is 100 in the hole at minimum, not too mention any other help needed
do they cover your aba and vb- here they don't. not at school or gov ins, in fact private ins does not have to cover it until january. applied behavior analysis with a combination of verbal behavior has done wonders for adrian, unfortunately i have to pay 500 a month for it plus supplies. 3000 for the summer program, but he can now tell you im good when u ask how he is doing. first time ever and he is six years old. it is robotic though

I know of a child who's mother refused help because as long as the child was labled LD she received a social security check.

Savage reminds me of a doctor I had in 2006-knew it all-and knew nothing. Looking back on it now it's almost laughable. I don't think he knows about autism as much as he knows about shock-jocking. You know what? I'm man enough to admit that I am an example of psuedo-autism. My mother was quick to accept that I was "autistic" just because it would be easier for her to get government aid, welfare, and help for paying for college. And it ruined my life. And I STILL know for a fact that autism ISN'T overdiagnosed. It just so happens that my case was an exception.

Present us parents with children with autism facts. In case you did not know, most children of autism are born to visual and pattern thinkers. So we are an intelegent group of people. Go ahead test our knowledge. Some of us have tested Savage's and guess what! We won, we have the facts!
Autism affects everyone across the board and is not more prevelant in any one social level or political party, thus linking it to politics is irrelevent. Likewise, Savage criticises all political parties and considers himself an independent so that argument is irrelevant. Many conservatives who have children with autism know that Savage is incorrect. Children with autism are not medicated unless they have an dual-diagnosis with another medical problem, such as seizures.
If he would have said ADHD instead of autism it would have been much more accurate. Although some kids really do have ADHD and can't function to the level of the average person becuase of their condition.
I just went back and listened to his broadcast on July 16th, and I'm curious of how many others calling for his firing have actually heard it.
He basically said that everyone nowadays is diagnosed with an illness, and doctors are quick to diagnose "little brats that haven't been to cut the act out" as autistic. He didn't even come close to saying autistic children were brats! Maybe the 99% is wrong, but what he said was taken completely out of context.
The problem is that the value of Savage's rant is false. It is very hard to get a misdiagnosis of autism because it is a rigourous process that lasts about two years. It takes a team of specialists to test verbal, medical and communication development. And there is no motive. Doctors get a reimbursement of $15.00 from medicaid for testing or treating a child with autism- that is over a hundred dollar loss to a doctor. Autism is the most underfunded disability in america.
Exactly. It took 6 months for a doctor to even take my concerns about my son's development seriously. My concerns were attributed to me being one of those "nervous first time moms". We lost valuable early intervention time because of that. I'd love to know exactly who is getting rich off autism. There is no pill, it's next to impossible to get insurance to cover therapies, etc. The families I know are just like ours is...broke and constantly fighting for a crumb.

It is not about Michael Savage being a crazy ignorant fool, he is putting this social topic into layman terms of how he was brought up during this time as a child. I myself was never diagnose with autism, even though I had a learning disability (which was nonsense as I was getting older) and lost some of my hearing from an accident when I was 5 years old. So, Savage was generalizing his experiences between now and during his childhood, or at least something similar to it.

I am very familiar with an organization that works with children with autism. 2% of these kids are autistic, 98% are simply behaviorally challenged due to either inept parenting or environmental stresses imposed by the adults who raise them. Savage is making a point that should be well considered even if the delivery is over-dramatic. By the way, Bill Gates is has a form of autism known as Ausberger's Syndrome, so semantics are important when talking about such diseases.

As for who diagnoses my son? Help went through four sets of tests, three evaluations, and the final official diagnoses can from his pediatrician. This process took over a year. Thats a very short amount of time compared to a lot families out there. So I ask you, what do you believe the reason for all these diagnoses? Money? we receive none. (Only to pay for his school) money on their part? Out of that whole ordeal he saw her the very least. Because its a cool new band wagon to be on?

I have Aspergers, which is basically a more mild form of Autism, so for me it is very hard to have a social connection with other people because my way of thinking is so different. Most Autistic Children tend be incredibly smart and knowledgable in certain areas and can excel in certain things that most people can't. However the Autism itself has alot negative affects on a child's immune system, socail learning and other various problems.

I happen to know 2 that genuinely have autism. I know of 5 that are labeled ASD, but are not. The information that I have read basically says that kids with autism cannot control their actions, which makes the disorder a prime target for over diagnosing. I have not held a parent while they cried about their child. Leaky gut is a physical problem not a mental one. autism spectrum disorder- these disorders have been around for years- they are connecting the peices- they are neurological disorders that have connecters, and it is one out of every 99 boys. one out of 166 as a whole including boys and girls. can you have controlled diabetes (not requiring medication) and still be diabetic? same with autism. you do not have to be severely autistic, as with any disability, some are more severe than others.

I can answer- first of all- there is not much help out there. ABA will not be covered by even private insurance until January. Most public schools don't offer it. It is the MAIN treatment option. Savage may have had to deal with a lot, I won't discount that. It is even the more reason he SHOULDN'T HAVE ATTACKED OUR KIDS. And for the last line. You need to have a little more information. that proves you do not know what you are talking about. they are not cured, their behavior is simply modified- probably using aba. behavior modification is used to control some of the symptoms- alcoholism for example- therapy does not cure the alcoholic, it helps to modify their behavior. no autism and alcoholism is not the same, but they are treated with therapy which helps control their behavior, not cured mind you

Your right, they are not cured because a lot of them didnt have it in the first place! One memorable child that my mom had to deal with used to throw himself into the middle of a group of kids. The group putz teachers and parents labeled him as autistic, and he was sent to my mom's class. Whenever he would pull a stunt like that, she would hold him by the wrists and march him up to the principal's office. After a few times of this, he stopped the behavior and is now "normal".

That's not true. Parents or Teachers can't diagnose a child as Autistic. They can suspect Autism, but not diagnose. Teachers can lead the parents in the right direction but only a team of doctors can diagnose a child as Autistic. The diagnosis requires many assessments and cannot be completed during a single behavioral observation. Yes teachers and parents can play a part in the diagnoses, but they still need that team of doctors.

Also 99% was wrong but thats exaggeration get over it... Btw Don't compare your self to a cripple please. Physical and Metal Disorders are very different I know because I have OCD but I can keep it in check. Part of the reason was my parents getting mad at me so maybe that will work on autism too.

Actually if your child is Autistic, you do qualify for a social security check once a month, and there is nothing wrong with that because that child is entitled to that.

i listened to the broadcast. maybe you didnt. yes, there is a possibility of misdiagnosis, but it is most certainly not 99% misdiagnosis. there is no such thing as a benefit of having an autistic child, the government does not pay for there schooling unless it is an away school, in which they would immediately realize a misdiagnosis. alot of you people that are saying "savage is right" "your all nothing but liberals" have probably never confronted an autistic person.

This is what I mean.. People really shouldn't comment on things that they don't know much about. I'm not trying to be rude or start something, but you are very wrong. An Autistic child doesn't have to be in school or away from home to get a SSI check. I'm a mother of a Autistic child, who lives at home and isn't in school yet and he gets a SSI check. All Autistic kids qualify for SSI. I do know what I'm talking about. You want proof, do research, or call the SSI yourself.

Yes they do- but here is the thing. School criteria is different from medical- if your child is in school they want his last iep. if your child is hfasd then he may not qualify on the schools account though you have a medical diagnosis. ssi is not usually given to children with a school dd with an exceptionality in two or less areas. when a child is on ssi with asd, therapy runs a min 400 a mo with ssi being 300 so it is 100 in the hole at minimum, not too mention any other help needed

Maybe it's different in each state... not sure. All I know is I get help where I'm at with therapy for my son. With or without school, they get SSI.

do they cover your aba and vb- here they don't. not at school or gov ins, in fact private ins does not have to cover it until january. applied behavior analysis with a combination of verbal behavior has done wonders for adrian, unfortunately i have to pay 500 a month for it plus supplies. 3000 for the summer program, but he can now tell you im good when u ask how he is doing. first time ever and he is six years old. it is robotic though

Wow, Savage is an idiot. How sad. He acts like there is some benefit to "pretending" to be autistic. Families end up spending money they don't have to get their kids the services they deserve. Healthcare covers nothing for autism. If there is some sort of hand out going on to families with autism I want to get in line, because I don't know of any. Soon enough this jack ass will have someone he loves affected then his tune will change. It's such a shame.

I think he meant ADD. Sure, there are a few kids out that are misdiagnosed as autistic, but ADD fits what Savage is talking about. I think he made a mistake. I listen to his show regularly, but he really botched this one. It doesn't take away from the fact that he is the best conservative talk show host. Rush, Bill, and Sean are unlistenable after hearing Savage.

I know of a child who's mother refused help because as long as the child was labled LD she received a social security check.
Why are so many children diagnosed? Is this guy blind? So if 90% of the children was on psychotropic drugs this guy would not even look twice. Someone needs to stand up for the children. Michael Savage is right-on!

I have a friend who is high functioning autistic- very limited social skills - and even then I couldn't imagine anything worse than to yell at him to "snap out of it." His whole life, he has wanted nothing more than to just "snap out of it" and to interact with people normally. If he could, he would have by now.

I have High Functioning Autism.
And I work with non verbal autistic toddlers.
I listen to Savage all the time.
But I think Savage has some good points.
There is overdiagnosing of Autism and some kids who are "autistic" are just dumb.
Because now Autism is cool and in so now every kid who doesnt look at you is diagnosed with autism.
And your just using this to slam conservatism.

Michael Savage may not have a neurological type of autism; but he is the most Autistic (socially anyway) man I have ever heard. I suppose there are incidences where children fake it; but that is not most of the time. I have aspergers, which is a form autism. Autism is very real. He also did a screwball rant on healthcare; yes we can all eat better. We need to fix so every American can have access they can afford to the healthcare they need. Someone said his name was Weiner, not Savage.

Savage reminds me of a doctor I had in 2006-knew it all-and knew nothing. Looking back on it now it's almost laughable. I don't think he knows about autism as much as he knows about shock-jocking. They get paid to do that. I know personally that autism and Asperger Syndrome are very real and that I don't need to prove it to this fool.

My mother was quick to accept that I was "autistic" just because it would be easier for her to get government aid, welfare, and help for paying for college. And it ruined my life. And I STILL know for a fact that autism ISN'T overdiagnosed. It just so happens that my case was an exception.

Autism affects everyone across the board and is not more prevelant in any one social level or political party, thus linking it to politics is irrelevent. Likewise, Savage criticises all political parties and considers himself an independent so that argument is irrelevant. Many conservatives who have children with autism know that Savage is incorrect. Children with autism are not medicated unless they have an dual-diagnosis with another medical problem, such as seizures.

I just went back and listened to his broadcast on July 16th, and I'm curious of how many others calling for his firing have actually heard it.
He basically said that everyone nowadays is diagnosed with an illness, and doctors are quick to diagnose "little brats that haven't been to cut the act out" as autistic. He didn't even come close to saying autistic children were brats! Maybe the 99% is wrong, but what he said was taken completely out of context.

The problem is that the value of Savage's rant is false. It is very hard to get a misdiagnosis of autism because it is a rigourous process that lasts about two years. It takes a team of specialists to test verbal, medical and communication development. And there is no motive. Doctors get a reimbursement of $15.00 from medicaid for testing or treating a child with autism- that is over a hundred dollar loss to a doctor. Autism is the most underfunded disability in america.

Exactly. It took 6 months for a doctor to even take my concerns about my son's development seriously. My concerns were attributed to me being one of those "nervous first time moms". We lost valuable early intervention time because of that. I'd love to know exactly who is getting rich off autism. There is no pill, it's next to impossible to get insurance to cover therapies, etc. The families I know are just like ours is...broke and constantly fighting for a crumb.
