  • i agree with spudfish93. it does appear that jesus is taking the piss in this scene. one of the highlights of the show this song is

  • I love Jesus' face throughout, it looks like he's constantly trying to stifle a laugh.

  • I used to be Christian but then I took an arrow to the knee ?

  • Poor Peter, he wants so much good things, and we al know he really loves Jesus, he's so impulsive. He just understands too little.

  • If there is a god I believe he used Jesus as a sort of puppet. Near the end of this when he was in the garden of gesemode (or however you spell it) he expressed that God started this, not him. That reinforced my theory that Jesus was more of a puppet than anything. Or I could be reading way too far into this. But the idea still remains.

  • @SolitaireMasta Maybe you should read it in the bible. Then you'd understand a lot more. And you'd understand why Jesus is not a puppet. Jesus is God.

  • @NRfun Just because I don't think god is the greatest thing ever doesn't mean I've never read the bible. I've read it and I think it's so terribly biased that it's not worth regaurding as fact. And as for Jesus being God. Are you saying that in gesthmone (I can't spell it) Jesus was praying to himself?

  • @SolitaireMasta Jesus is part of the Trinity, as other users have said, it's a 3 in 1 God situation. Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit are separate but they are part of that Trinity.

  • @NeverDoubt1 I know that. What I'm trying to point out that Jesus and God aren't the same being. Which is what people like NRfun are trying to say.

  • @SolitaireMasta Gotcha, sorry if I misunderstood.

  • @NeverDoubt1 It's cool. :)

  • @SolitaireMasta I am atheist, but your lack of knowledge into your own religion is worrying, so here is a brief education. holy trinity= 3 in 1. the father, the son, the holy spirit. emphasis on 3 in 1. This is known as the hypostatic union, jesus being 100% man yet also 100% divine, meaning he is 100% god. Jesus is god incarnate, the father and the son are the same being. Or you could take my view, which is religion is outdated in todays society- let us evolve spiritually!the human mind is god.

  • @slashedmckagan What you just described is what YOU and YOUR religion believe. The religion I was born into believes that the son and the father are two separate beings. And as for the human mind being god, there's no way in hell. People are too stupid.

  • @slashedmckagan As a Christian I want to say your interpretation is correct. :)

  • I crack up every time I watch this. :D

  • To conquere death you only have to die. Damne!....

  • Look ma, I'm making it snow in the middle of a desert! :D

  • When style wasn't slutty.

  • Great dancing, they even had magic mushrooms back then, wow!!

  • @Marc3ism Pretty sure the earth had shrooms for several millions of years...

  • Love this song!!!!!!!

  • People in the 70's although more innocent where more interested in enlightenment and inquiring into their inner selves, now most people are vain and shallow.

  • @WolfEyesatNight the problem is that for a brief moment, people were challenging all concepts of government, politics, and society, and that was the hippy movement. Then civil rights, urban rioting, and alot of other reasons turned people to Nixon, law and order, and money. Money can buy anything in the modern US for nearly half a century now, sex, drugs, entertainment, etc, and the apathetic people are unwilling to help the poor anymore, bc that takes hard work. Try reform, and ur 'socialist'

  • @dchris1990 conservatives oftentimes seem to think that trying to help the poor is socialist. liberals seem to think that the only point in life is to give people the right to marry as they please, both are ignoring the problems that actually require positive work, like helping the poor and diseased.

  • @dchris1990 "If I feed the poor I'm called a saint. If I ask why they're poor, I'm called a Communist." ;)

  • @dchris1990

Made your point well, I don't believe reforms do anything but patch an all ready corrupted system, if we had a deeper understanding of our selves, we wouldn't

    need any reforms.

The hippie movement was suppressed not educated.

the real Jesus is actually a menace to any government.

  • All i can say is WTF?

  • I love how the Poor Jerusalem is a vision and has a theme very similar to Pilate's Dream - also a vison...

  • Weird, theres a crack head tramp who hangs around the car park of the green lanes maccy Ds dribbling and begging looks just like simon.

  • thats brunnet in the left side is so fuckign hot...

  • Oh, Jesus , I'm with you!!!

  • 1:52 0_0

    Simon WTF are you doing?

  • Jesus Rocks!

  • SO powerful

  • I'm in band and we're doing this as the musical for this year... needless to say, the movie does it a lot better XD

  • We watched this in my religion class and we were laughing the whole time XD No disrespect

  • Dude there all so fucking skinny!

  • @thehoffmanapprentice fat proffessional dancers are rare...

  • katarsis!!!!

  • I find it funny how all these people are singing and dancing their hearts out and Jesus is stood there enjoying himself and watching the show.

  • 2:46 Juds:... What the f*ck?

  • @Gmanreviewer wtf it's over 9000 !!!

  • @Gmanreviewer "Damn,these people are crazy!"

  • @Gmanreviewer His face is so priceless.

  • why are you allways opsessed with his death!? cmon, listen to things he said!

and i aint christian neither,as half from people here

  • I'm an Atheist and this has been my favorite movie for over 26 years. The passion and talent in which these people sing is far beyond amazing. Goose bumps happen when I listen. Hats off!!!!

  • @cerealbowls Same here. It's an amazing story, and I don't think you need to buy the whole "God" shit to get into it. And the singing...damn. But I think it's more religious people that dislike this movie because it tries to show that maybe Judas and Pilate weren't such bad people. It also tries to show that maybe Jesus was just a humble man, and not a God.

  • @johncerasi I agree about why some religious people don't like it and it's sad. They're missing out on a great musical and a fascinating interpretation on Jesus' life (and I say this as a Christian).

  • @johncerasi

Another atheist who loves this movie here. What I'm most impressed with is how they took the gospels story ( a terribly designed narrative by any standard) and made it good. The "greatest story ever told" canard is hilarious. I mean, here you have a story about a popular demagogue and reformer being executed, but then you ruin the sense of tragedy by having it be the plan all along, also he's not really dead. Also he was God. Like this version better.

  • @scienceandponies How did that ruin the story? Not being rude, just curious.

  • @NeverDoubt1

The conflict and tragedy really loses its impact. First there's the problem of the villains still somehow being villainous even though they all working towards God's plan. The poignancy of sacrifice is obliterated when he turns out not to be dead. The whole thing reeks of a happy ending slapped on at the last minute because the original makes it seem like they lost. Makes me think of how many books turned movie get butchered by test audiences.

  • @scienceandponies I guess it depends on what you're looking for. There are times when I prefer a tragic, sacrificial story. And other times when I think we need to step out of our misery and have a more hopeful ending following a tragedy.

  • @johncerasi "It also tries to show that maybe Jesus was just a humble man, and not a God." I get the implication that it casts Jesus as a man who began as humble, but as his popularity soared so did his humility lessen. As in the opening song by Judas, he sings "You've started to believe the things they say of you" Then, later, in the temple Jesus says "My temple should be a house of prayer," confirming that he has lost his sense of humanity. Just a thought sparked by your comment.

  • @cerealbowls Do you think you could make a case for Judas being an atheist, going on what you see in this film?

  • @cerealbowls OMG atheist here, but my fave movie.

  • @cerealbowls why are you an atheist?

  • my favourite song on the album

  • *3:55

  • You get the power you get the glory *voice crack. This was one of my favorite films as a kid, I love the music.

  • where is place ? Lindos Greece?

  • foreeever and eveeer and eveeeer

  • Best scene in this film. The choreography is amazing. Like it better than the 2000 version too!

  • 50,000? I'm not sure his math is right there ;)

  • Jesus sounds like crap. The one currently playing in Stratford ON is way better. He starts singing and I start crying.

  • @magic6Jewls your opinion of course

  • I always thought that the increasing number of Roman soldiers, and the troubled look of Judas in the backgrounds were well done touches adding more to the scene.

  • Beautiful message.

    Great choreography.

  • jesuits, let india adopt you so jesus will have blue skin like krishna and than the blue people will thrive on earth .

  • Technically speakin' this is one of the most brilliant scenes in the picture. Top Broadway dancers gettin' the hell out of it almost drowned by sand and dust. Simon's player is great. But in almost every scene the greatest presence is Judas. He steals the whole thing for himself...

  • Absolute masterpiece!

The play is about it: how Jesus followers viewed and perceived him. For Judas Jesus was a guru going too far and for Simon a political leader going short. of his expectations Mary just loved him as a man. Nobody actually seems to understand Jesus' real role.

    (CONT)

  • I liked Tony Vincent's portrayal in the 2000 one better

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • Good for your own life is God,

    but God lives in Frankfurt,

by the wish of his own Incarnation.

  • I want to do like the guy on 0:46!

  • I would touch the blonde 1:16

  • @Komnenit , I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN!! THE BLOND IS GORGEOUS!!!

  • @Komnenit this was filmed 40 years ago, so she is about 65 now. you *sure* want to touch that?

  • @apiocera Just imagine I have a fucking time machine, ok?

  • Also Simon cannot count in this video

  • Just a quick thing, the term zealot for a jew back then meant you were willing to fight and die against the romans. They were not concerned with actually suceeding so mcuh as just trying to push the romans out period.

  • This movie has a collection of some of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. Hair, body, smile, these ladies are just so pretty. They even make their rugged clothes look good. And of course they kept them all natural, which is just hot. I'm a straight woman, but these ladies are very pretty to me. And actually, the men are really hot too - they all have great bodies.

  • @anythingisplenty What about Herod.

  • @anythingisplenty Apparently, Ted Neeley (Jesus) thought so, too. His wife was one of the ensemble girls. :) According to the DVD commentary, they didn't start dating until after filming was over because it would have felt wrong for him to be hitting on the extras "with this robe on."

  • Love the choreography...

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAA...MMMEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNN!!!

  • 1:54 to 1:59

This must be my new ringtone

  • People close their eyes, they don't understand what power is , what glory is.

  • I like how they show a concerned judas whenever Jesus' lack of controll is shown.

  • @indigodragon78 its to show why in the end he betrays Jesus

  • At one point the piano playing is terrible. I also think Jesus do more dancing instead of smiling contently while everyone busts a move - apart Judas who is thinking they are all a little bit barmy.

  • Rest a sure my friend the Lord is working in them. As a ex mocker myself. Christ made Himself know to me. If He made Himself know to me, and Will do the same for others. ;-) Jesus loves you!!!

  • @XXLoveoneanother YEAHHHHHH BOYYY! PRASIE THE LORD MUTHA FUCKAS! GOOD BLESS

  • silly crazy black guy, there arent 50000 people there.

    jesus, dont encourage him.

  • Poor Jerusalem, you only have to die. Fantastic

  • simon is a good singer :D

  • Did you see how the Savior's expression changed when Simon suggested he become a leader of a rebellion instead of what he was sent here for.

  • Dude. Favorite scene in the entire movie.

  • @Chuckles123thefish and @nickmandl

Can we have more people like you two on the internet please?

  • i love the zoom on judas' concerned face about halfway through the video.

  • The 70's were cool!

  • catharsis

  • 2:16 Do a barrel roll!

  • @insaneintherainCE

that wasnt a barrel roll lol

  • We had a production of this at my local theatre. Simon was a blondie with this blue stripe of hair on the left side of his head. He was epic!

  • MONKEY MAN!

  • even tho simon might look funny and weird on this track i like it a lot better than the 2000 version

  • 1:15 Jesus is loving this :)

  • for people wondering why Simon is depicted as borderline insane, he wasn't called "Simon the Zealot" for nothing. Although Zealot has a specific definition with respect to the Simon mentioned in the New Testament, he is depicted here as a true "zealot": basically a person who is super super amped about someone or something (in this case Jesus, and the cause: getting rid of the Romans)

  • @donquixotex

Obviously, but his zeal to call for arms is better depicted in the 2000 version. In 1973, Simon still looks like Bob Marley who seeks a personal benefit. IMHO

But this scene in both films is awesome

  • the choreography / song mix is both dated and fantastic at the same time...this clip should go into the time capsule (along with Eric Burden and War singing Spill The Wine), as the quintessential best of the 1970s

  • Simon is on crack..

  • The original ~Jesus Christ Superstar is one of the greatest works of art of all time

reason being is these very talented young people had NOTHING and actually went to Jerusalem; ..And relied on their pure desire and devotion to do this glorious depiction of Christ...i had the most fortunate opportunity to attend this original version of Jesus Christ Superstar many years ago not only was the cast most charming but also humble ....no remake will ever compare

  • @Normaslc And yet it seems that Andrew Lloyd Webber hated it so much that for the next quarter of a century he did not allow anybody else creative license with his productions....

  • i love the simplisity said in that "you only have to die" lol but wow deep jesus deep

  • Judas looks like he's thinking "bitch, where's my song?"

  • @funkybum haha ;D

  • I love the choreography

  • Jesus Was, Is, and ever shall be. He is God :-))

  • @coconutcrab4martin

you don't understand what glory is.

  • Jesus face at 3:20 priceless...he is shocked!

  • Haha I love Judas at 2:45

    .........da fuck?

  • A very cool portrayal of what we are. The fire that burns within us all.

  • I don't get this who is simon?

  • Comment removed

  • @sherry56 google it...

  • @sherry56 Simon is a very big fan of Jesus. He is more or least saying that he is devoting his loyality to Jesus.

  • Simon doesn't seem to get it at 6:10

  • these dancers will be in their late fifties and early sixties now, yet I bet if they stayed dancing or in the entertainment industry, that they will be as svelte and energetic as they are in this rock opera. Their styles are every bit relevant to the bohemian nature of people who are in their 20s and 30s.

  • ditty from this classic Andrew Lloyd Weeber rock opera flick version by Norman Jewison that’s quite an irony for its author Tim Rice who seem to comprehend the bible more than many among the Bible belt who lambast this work- as this segment shows, mistaking Christ to become their savior politician, the same ‘worshippers’ demand him crucifixion when he seem to fail their expectation when he begins to tell them his real agenda. (check Gospel accd. to John ch. 6 vv. 60-71).

  • I gotta say, although this one is pretty much better overall than the 2000 movie, the 2000 version of this song is way, way better. It's much better at showing how fanatical everyone got and how that is not what Jesus wanted at all. Plus, Simon is better.

  • I think to fully understand this scene one must remember the historical context at the time of Jesus. Rome was cracking down on the Zealot revolt that was occuring and the people were rising up. Simon was a man who saw Jesus as a powerful force to acheive their end-state, Rome defeated. This scene merely shows members of the uprising worshiping Jesus. Like Simon says to Jesus in the song "50 000 strong, add a touch of hate at Rome, we will win ourselfs a home" This presents the political side.

  • Poor Simon :(

  • Big clue.

people don't know what power or glory are.

  • Absolutely great! So much irony. It's like a Jesus-loving version of "Hair". I like the choreography and when they do the slow motion spins. Favorite lyrics: "Did you see I waved?" and "Keep them yelling their devotion,

But add a touch of hate at Rome."

  • Jesus...Love It...Or Well ...He Is The Way....GOD Bless.=

  • BETTER THAN THE REMAKE. Could watch this a million times before ever considering watching the remake again.

  • @hpluvr888 I didn't even know there was a remake! :)

  • @reservedpowers Yep! It's very similar to Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Except they have big guns and the performing is much less unique...so it sounds like the same people singing each part. They don't have much personality the way this cast does. Original FTW!!

  • The best part about this version are Judas's WTF face and Simon's epic freakout at the end.

  • Damn I get thirsty just looking at that landscape, imagine trying to keep water up to the tomatoes!

  • i had the highest rated comment. it contained a drug reference. you removed it. how prude. that is all.

  • Yoga.

  • I saw this in Stratford, and they messed up the 'power and the glory' part. Wrong lyrics...but I still LOVE it.

  • The religious talk here is a bit silly. Jesus Christ Superstar was written and composed by non-believers.

  • @Crezth

I would like to think it was by nonbelievers who were searching for something.

  • I was just about to fall asleep but suddenly came this scene on the screen so I was awake

  • nice work!

  • ΥΥ

  • ΝΑΙ

  • I could never reconcile myself to this movie. Visually, let us say, it's decent, but vocally - after listening to original recording with Ian Gillan and Murray Head - this is pure travesty. The guy who sings, or least tries to, Simon here ruins completely some of the finest lines in the whole rock opera. Horrendous crap!

  • @Spiritakis maybe you are right, this is musically crap. But a guy that dances as frenetically and...fanatically, he must NOT sing perfectly!

  • Love those Hipster jeans.

  • One of the best dance sequences ever filmed. Great film.

  • Sorry but this guy singing Jesus doesn't hold a candle to Ian Gillan.

  • Hipster jeans in 30AD?

  • @manco82

hejab and burka in 2011? eheh

  • @manco82 I believe the mini-bus they arrive in at the start of the film is a wee bit more of an anachronism...

  • Still one of the best dance sequences I have seen in film. i think this whole film captures a moment in time, really some special energy and, can't quite define it.

Even the fashion, I think the hipster jeans are amazing compared to that baggy stuff now.

  • (◘)_(◘)

this smiley is a raver copy and paste this to all your favorite videos so we can bring back Techno

  • pause then play and hold 0... 1337 typewriter skills

  • I like the way Simon is very scruffy, yet has perfect teeth.

  • @almeida062 I like his freckles!

  • But what do you think Jesus wants to say when he sings: to conquer death you only have to die? Is he urging us to die or something?

  • This choreography is matchless, delicious, great, killing!

  • Great video! But Simon is so fanatical crazy it's kind of disturbing.

  • 5 people who are going to hell

  • YOOOOOOOU GET THE POWER YOOOOOOOOOOOU GET THE GLORY!!!!!!!

  • 3:21, the way it builds and chords change, Amazing. Andrew Lloyd Weber was never able to top this one.
