Used to watch these O4 loco's and all the others going across the long bridge over the LMS at Rugby. This is a super video. pity Fred insisted on wearing his rattin' hat which they never did on the GCR.
It's good to hear from people who worked with steam on the 'real' railways. I bet 63601 wasn't as clean in those days. Did you realise you were firing such a beautiful locomotive?
The last time i fired the loco it looked awful,as did most of them in the 60s,and sounded rough as they never got cleaned or maintained, they just did not bother,as they knew they were due to be scrapped No cleaners were replaced, and any major problem the engine was stood to rust, but they still expected you to do your job with them,as they certainly worked hard at my shed with some very heavy loads, and it became hard work to keep steaming, she looks a treat now
old freddie on the o4 eh? one thing bout him, he really needs to learn to lighten up!

Thanks. I hate to appear ignorant, but what is a 'rattin' hat?

A flat cap worn by the working classes and gentry

Yes, it was almost a British tradition that the working class and the gentry got on better than either did with the middle class.

It was worn by folk who went 'rattin' i.e. mostly working class.
