  • He doesn't look too cold! Sweat rolling down his face.

  • The bass player appears to be Glenn Worf. Not Mark Schatz and not Roy Huskey, Jr.

  • @EarlWannabe Good eye to you and the others. It's Glen Worf!!!!!!!!!! :)

  • shoooooot this has nothin on jersey shores lol riiiiiight

  • ricky skaggs plays watseka theatre watseka illinois on aug 26

  • The rhythm is great, but not with the copious amount of words in the lyric. If it were an instrumental it would be stone cold perfect! But it's too fast a rendition because of Gord's many words in the lyric. Great playing though.

  • Tony Rice Unit comes to the watseka theatre watseka illinois on may 7, 2011

  • Great performance. That's Mark Shatz on bass by the way- not Roy Jr.

  • Is the Clements playing here related to Gord's guitarist by any chance?

  • Tony sing's a lot of Gordon Lightfoot.I saw him sing Song For a Winter's Night when he was touring with Allison Krauss.Other than Gordon Lightfoot it was the best arrangement of the song I have ever heard.Tony is a great artist.

  • Three of my friends in this video are now gone...but thanks to this great post their wonderful legacy lives on!! Thanks...

  • When somebody remakes a classic song, and does a great job, it's like having two songs instead of one. I love Lightfoot's version, and this one's good too.

  • WHAT CAN YOU SAY?TONY IS THE MAN!!! HIS BAND TOO!!

  • Man, that's a hot band

  • What an incredible guest list. Mark O'Connor, Vassar Clements, John Hartford, Jerry Douglas, and Roy Huskey, Jr. wow

  • Tony Rice - never has there been a complete entertainer such as he - great musican and man can he sign - so even a child could understand the lyrics.

  • What a cool arrangement of a Lightfoot classic. Tony really hit it out of the park, and all of the players are top notch, to say the least. Priceless.

  • has anyone noticed how much tony looks like Kit Carson?

  • @guywiththeguns hell yeha.

  • vassar on fiddle wicked -)

  • Vassar's sweater rocks.

  • How I miss that golden-honey voice. At least we can still hear Tony play.

  • you got to love Tony Rice... His guitar work and vocals on this song is great

  • These guys are the best!

  • Talk about one hell of a grouping!

  • Ole Mr. Vassar always kept that hair top notch.

I told him one time....."Mr. Vassar.....Youve got one of those Hair Helments"

    He thought that was funny.

    Nice feller.

  • this is written by a fellow Canadian Gordan Lightfoot

  • Correct. He is not in my taste but his songwriting is great and he was one of Tony's biggest influences along with the late, great Clarence White

  • Tony Rice always was and always will be one of the true class acts in bluegrass on a par with Bill Monroe, Vassar Clements, Doc Watson and a long but very select list of all-time superstars. Thanx for the upload.

  • this is an awsome version

  • thats a good comeback there. threatening that you are such a good player, and you can prove it by playing a show that you know that they will not go to because they likely dont have access to it. i guess you won that argument.

  • Comment removed

  • is that really true?? Where did you hear this??

  • tony wouldn't punch anybody

  • wrong again missy!

  • i love tony

  • That ain't Roy Huskey. It's Glen Worf.

  • @gatortail1 Good eye gatortail1. :-)

  • The MAN! Outstanding as usual!

  • Great post, and nice touch with the in memory of Roy, John and Vasser.

  • I could play for the next 2,000 years 23 hours a day and not even come close. I like the comment about firewood! My bone is'nt ready for the fire just yet, but tony is the master!

  • Every time I hear TR I get this urge to make a nice campfire out of my guitars,.... thx for the vid!

  • haha me too! or practice 12 hours a day...

  • Exellent version of Cold on the shoulder. But, out of all the versions I've heard, I've never heard Gordon's version. If you have it please send it to me. Also if you have Gordons version of 10 degrees and getting colder, I'd like to see that too.

  • hahaha why did this get six thumbs down

  • i dont know .

  • did anybody notice that i said a good thing about tony. why did it get 6 thumbs down.

  • Interesting "blue grass" rendition of a Gordon Lightfoot song.

  • Nobody can play like this man, makes you wish you were his guitar.

  • Tony Rice was, is, and always will be the king of bluegrass guitar! how does "THE BONE" stand so much intensity

  • Rice, O'Connor and Douglas: the Cream of bluegrass. Jeez. Just too cool for school.

  • This is as good as it can be!

  • Man, I sure do miss hearing Tony Rice sing in person.

  • bang them strings! good music.

  • Met Tony and The Boys in Washington Mo. back in early the early nineties and got a hug from my fellow floridian for getting some cold beer at 2am. If I'm lyin I'm dyin.

  • Tony Rice is just so damn cool.

  • this IS music!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Why arn't there T.V shows like this anymore? Instead we get MTV and a bunch of horrible reality shows.

  • @VAhlene MTV used to be good many years ago now its shit. By the way its called NTV for noise television.

  • @VAhlene I don't know about you but I can't stand 99.9% of country music TV either. It's mostly cheesy pop country with dumb lyrics and minimal musicianship. Give me the sweet sounds of old time acoustic country or bluegrass any day over that.

  • Thanks for this! I now realize that I was playing it wrong. I learned this Tony Rice version (basic chords only so far, but still very fun) of a Gordon Lightfoot song from a CD and I thought the second rhythm figure part was D C Bb A G , and now I see that it is actually D C Bb then back to C and then G. "It's cold on the shoulder, and you know that we get a little older every day." Just remember the order: All we need is: time, trust, and faith. The rest of the lyrics are easy to remember.

  • MR.Tony Rice,that's my man , if he can't kick ass,nobody can!

  • Tony is the man!

  • LOVE IT!

  • Bring back the Kissimmie Kid from this show! Vassar was awesome.

  • ...Damn...

  • the timing tony gets on this song is like no other.

  • He must have really like Gordon Lightfoot..I just watched him do 10 degrees and getting colder..Good taste:)

  • he made a whole cd of gordon lightfoot covers

  • Yeah. Check out "Tony Rice Sings Gordon Lightfoot". It's an amazing compilation album with songs from Tony's solo albums as well as from his stints in various groups such as J.D. Crowe and the New South.

  • Ahhh, so lose and tight at the same time. I don't know how many times I've come back to this video :)

  • keep em commin,great clips

  • This was my favorite episode of American Music Shop. Thanks a ton for posting!

  • this was about '92. I was there. It was a great show.

  • vintage,

Do you have the closing with "Steam Powered Aeroplane"? If so please, please post.

  • Vassar Clements is the master. I simply cannot imagine anyone getting a more original sound out of a stringed instrument than Vass!

  • May he rest in peace

  • uh...tony's not dead. i don't know where you got that idea.

  • Look a little closer next time. I was responding to the comment about Vassar Clements.

  • Liar.

  • Kind of weak troll effort, don't you think? Try harder next time.

  • What must I do to impress you?

  • Cookin' Mark(England)

  • Hey Phylis, this was from the American Music Workshop back when The Nashville Network was still in operation. Now it's that crap "Spike" channel....damn shame! Your old pickin' pal Richie said that.....

  • awesome footage - when was this?

  • early 90's I think

  • @phylliserck Actually, I'm going to put this in the early to mid 1980s. Tony stopped singing around 1990/91 or so. And the hair goes with it.

  • @phylliserck Early to mid 1980s, I'm pretty sure by the lineup.

  • Nice.. Tony Rice doing Lightfoot..classic

  • Wow...some music from TNN when it was TNN. I don't know if they have better ratings now, but whatever has become of them, it isn't a better channel.

  • this album is great too....good to see it live

  • ...Wow...A great bluegrass version of Gordon Lightfoot's "Cold on The Shoulder" from the album of the same name...Mr. Rice can pick...

  • ty love this u keep postin

  • Geeeeeeeeeee,What Shame we no longer have networt of our OWE!

  • Glad that I get to see these older videos. Grew up with newer technology but enjoy the older sound w/ the slite echo. Makes it hard to listen to anything else.

  • Amazing! Thank you!
