Are you making sure your palm is rested on or past the bridge (where your strings come in bending contact with that metal plate) rather than behind it? If not, stay in this area. Anything behind will not effect your sound, and too far beyond the bridge will be choppy. Also, quality amp distortion will really help you find that chunky sweet spot. = )

rest the meaty part of your hand (the area right below the thumb, the lower palm) on the area near the bridge and the humbucker, and play!

your video helped me very much dude but i have a problem cause i like to play my guitar ( when im not sitting on a chair ) low while im standing like james hetfield for example and many other guitarist and its bit hard to mute when im not sitting , any tips for that? maybe any exercise to make it better? i can mute it but sometimes i failed ( always while im standing AND is like impossible to mute the low strings and tip for that too?

Well :D i been sitting for like 3 hours today i swear my palm mute hand is fucking bledding almost :D i tried so much stuff like palm muting harder softer higher lower, changing my sound from my pedals, changing the battery of my mics.... but i don´t know always the same stuff happens when i play fast triplets....that´s so annoying...i am maybe gonna bring my guitar to a shop an see what they can do for me...

hey dude i got a problem with my palm muting.... somehow the big E string doesnt sound right when i play triplets or stuff like that eventhought i do mute it..... if u wanna see what i mean check my Rain cover on my channel... the other strings are ok but only this one sound weird.could u help mE?

hmm it does sound a bit metallic and tinny, but it is rather hard to make out- you seem to be pretty proficient in shredding. I recommend that you sit there in your room for like an hour until you get it down to how you want it.

But here's something: DON'T say palm muting is essential for heavy metal, because palm muting is essential for rock in general; whenever you play punk, blues, jazz, metal, alternative, there'll be palm muting.

how have you reached that conclusion?

in my opinion, downpicks sound so much crisper, defined and have an all round crunch that alternate picking often does not have. obviously, metal music requires this crunch. when this guy plays creeping death, it sounds shitty. but thats just my opinion.

Its not the alternate picking that makes it sound that way- its the tiny marshall- watch the gallop picking video- the palm muting and alternate are pretty good there- most guitarists use alternate picking because just using downstrokes isn't as fast. However, you are correct in that metallica uses only downstrokes most of the time...so for authentic creeping death- downstrokes and downstrokes only would be used
