I think it would sound better if you changed the tone on the bass. I personally like the "sizzling" sound of new strings and a more well-rounded bass tone...it probably would have cut through the mix that way too.

Professors who watch these auditions get bored of hearing bass players play Footprints, Blue Bossa, Autumn Leaves,etc because bass players play them all the time & eventually cover it in the Real Book

Generally speaking bassists always get accepted to good universities or music institutions regardless of their actual skill... Reason for this is purely because they are bassists... International shortage of them o_o Whereas the world has an overflow of vocalists and guitarists. I mean, Duh.. Those are the cool instruments people actually want to play.

They play the roots that guitarists can't be bothered with. They also help keep tempo if they lock in properly and because Bass kicks through the mix in a way that Treble/ Mids can't they add a whole new layer. But there aren't that many bassists around because to most people guitar is simply a more desirable instrument.

@qdqshred Actually, that's not true. I used to conduct some of the auditions for Berklee. Admission isn't totally determined by the audition piece. It's based on a combination of how well the prepared piece was performed along with some testing in sight-reading, ear training for melody, rhythm and harmony, and some improve. Then there's an interview to help determine if the auditionee is likely to be a good student. There is almost no consideration for what instrument you play.

@Umaiketsu Actually, tapping and picking are tangential. You might want to have considered a similar stance in flamenco and classical finger-picking.

My only problem with using a pick on bass is that it inhibits your immediate dynamism. Thereby, you aren't readily available to use a vast vocabulary of techniques.

That being said, using a pick in this song doesn't matter. It's not like it was originally written with slap, tapping, etc.

It is not hard to get into Berklee. It's what you do there that matters. Who you meet and how you progress. I have met a few people from admissions and they bank on making money on drop outs so they except quite a few people. They just want your money. Not knocking your playing at all though.
