Bad Situational awareness led to this. It was Totally pilot error that got them into LTE. At takeoff the wind was at his nose. 1. Mistake was pulling so much power on takeoff which lead to reduced tail rotor authority. 2. Was to not using his power pedal in the turn (in that A/C is to the right) in an out of ground effect and no ETL situation. Which leads me to believe he is a low time pilot in a clockwise M/R system. I do believe the pilot has experience - his recovery was correctly done

In other words, may not be so lucky next time, just ask Colin Mcrae, he wasn't.

@MudPumper The anti-torque pedals, or 'RUDDER PEDALS', are used to control the direction in which the nose of the aircraft is pointed. Application of the pedal in a given direction changes the pitch of the tail rotor blades, increasing or reducing the thrust produced by the tail rotor and causing the nose to yaw in the direction of the applied pedal. They dont have Rudders, but it does have a rear rotor ;)
Thanks for the refresher course on anti-torque and yaw on how it applies to rotorcraft. I'm a professional helicopter pilot and my point is that helicopters don't have rudders or rudder pedals. They have anit-torque pedals. ;)

After watching a few videos like this one, they come to believe me. It's not that it is more complicated, it's just that there are more things to pay attention to.

After reading the comments just like to clear some things up for some people. This did not happen near Mayobridge. All chicken houses must look the same!! It happened in a little place called Shinn..which is in N. Ireland. It doesn't really matter whether it was IAA, CAA, IRA, FBI, NLF, UVF OR THE KKK they all shit themselves including the pilot. Pilot underestimated the wind in N.Ireland. Needless to say the newlyweds had a lot of drink at the reception : )

This didnt happen in ireland even if the video description says it did. Try a wee place called Mayobridge in Co.down, Northern Ireland. Sure youd know that chicken house beside where the helicopter took off from anywhere.
The reason this 'stunt' almost turned to a fatal accident is the pilot did it 'downwind'. Doing any take off downwind in a helicopter is just asking for trouble.
Very scary indeed and very lucky. The ironic part is to see those relatives waving away at their nearly "departed" newlyweds... and having no clue of how close they came to die. Then the lady who says "they're coming over..." obviously it was for the pilot to come in quickly to change his underwear.
This was most certainly an almost complete stall of airflow on the tail rotor! When taking off quickly at high power setting (to show off), then this might happen. You just don't have enough pedal way to compensate for the moment. He was more than lucky to be able to recover from this situation!
I don't know. He certainly may have done it on purpose. Hard to tell. I assume the licensing requirements for this type of commerical operation are as strict as we have here in the USA so the pilot would be very competent.
I am pretty sure that a commerical liscense would NEVER allow for stunt to be preformed with clients on board.. could you imagine the insurance? This did seem to be done on purpose because he pulls out of it with a firm correction that seemed planed. either that or he was real good and acted very quickly because those kind of situations can turn bad very quick. I am guessing that it is someone they know who offered to give them a fancy leave for their wedding.
We don't have those restrictions in the US. While there are limits on certain attitudes of flight while flying air taxi operations its not clear that this would have been violated in this case. I'm not sure how similar the regulations there are to the US.
It does depend on the stunt, or at least for planes. I'm not sure if it's different for choppers. I know that pilots are almost "encouraged" to occasionally practice stalls, regardless of whether or not there are passengers. In that case, it's up to the pilot's own discretion.
Although I do see a northern reg car there (only one visible is the blue mini), so in which case it should be the CAA, because it could be actually across the border, under UK jurisdiction.. but those are clearly Irish accents, not northern. Meh.. CAA, IAA, who cares, definitely NOT FAA lol!

After reading the comments just like to clear some things up for some people. This did not happen near Mayobridge. All chicken houses must look the same!! It happened in a little place called Shinn..which is in N. Ireland. It doesn't really matter whether it was IAA, CAA, IRA, FBI, NLF, UVF OR THE KKK they all shit themselves including the pilot. Pilot underestimated the wind in N.Ireland. Needless to say the newlyweds had a lot of drink at the reception : )

The pilot is obviously an idiot. No doubt he shit his pants on this one though. He lost control for sure. Downwind take-offs need a lot more care than just yank the collective and go! Ireland is full of cowboy heli pilots!!

The reason this 'stunt' almost turned to a fatal accident is the pilot did it 'downwind'. Doing any take off downwind in a helicopter is just asking for trouble.

Very scary indeed and very lucky. The ironic part is to see those relatives waving away at their nearly "departed" newlyweds... and having no clue of how close they came to die. Then the lady who says "they're coming over..." obviously it was for the pilot to come in quickly to change his underwear.

This was most certainly an almost complete stall of airflow on the tail rotor! When taking off quickly at high power setting (to show off), then this might happen. You just don't have enough pedal way to compensate for the moment. He was more than lucky to be able to recover from this situation!

I don't know. He certainly may have done it on purpose. Hard to tell. I assume the licensing requirements for this type of commerical operation are as strict as we have here in the USA so the pilot would be very competent.

I am pretty sure that a commerical liscense would NEVER allow for stunt to be preformed with clients on board.. could you imagine the insurance? This did seem to be done on purpose because he pulls out of it with a firm correction that seemed planed. either that or he was real good and acted very quickly because those kind of situations can turn bad very quick. I am guessing that it is someone they know who offered to give them a fancy leave for their wedding.

We don't have those restrictions in the US. While there are limits on certain attitudes of flight while flying air taxi operations its not clear that this would have been violated in this case. I'm not sure how similar the regulations there are to the US.

It does depend on the stunt, or at least for planes. I'm not sure if it's different for choppers. I know that pilots are almost "encouraged" to occasionally practice stalls, regardless of whether or not there are passengers. In that case, it's up to the pilot's own discretion.

Although I do see a northern reg car there (only one visible is the blue mini), so in which case it should be the CAA, because it could be actually across the border, under UK jurisdiction.. but those are clearly Irish accents, not northern. Meh.. CAA, IAA, who cares, definitely NOT FAA lol!

WTF has it got to do with anyone on here? about 5% of people posting on here are actual heli pilots so why everyone else thinks they can put such details out is beyond me. And for the 5% of pilots actually reading/posting watching, are you saying you've never made a mistake? Bollocks I no I have, not to this extent but give him a break no one crashed or died. No one knows the circumstances here, you can sit an analyse all you want and play it on fsx
