  • Right or wrong?! I like both versions! The older by the great Victoria de los Angeles and the younger one by Elina Garanca! That gladly shows me that good singing is still possible! Thank you both Victoria and Elina! :D

  • ...Anna Moffo sings the sadest version ! LES

  • still feel more goosebumps from the joan baez version- this may hit the notes more exactly, but joan reaches deeper in the gut and shares it.

  • watta voice bellisima - victoria {where ever u are] never found a better version of this piece of music ! so beautiful! both !

  • she sings this piece as if it was a serene wind among the canopies of the brazilian jungle

  • Bellisima!!

  • Beautiful!

  • Villa-Lobos wrote this for Bidu Sayao and in my opinion the best interpreter. Victoria de los Angeles, whom I love, is too operatic for this piece.

  • Was ever a singer more aptly named? Pure loveliness.

  • Bidu Sayao, Bidu Sayao, the Very Best of them all.

  • Troppo operistica, Bidu' Sayao la canta molto meglio

  • pure gold

  • im my amateur and humble opinion this is one of the finest voices known, I use the present tense because she lives for as long as this recording lives - immortality perhaps? Add to that the haunting music and its a recipe that cant really be exceeded. There simply is no finer performance of this piece, never has been, never will be.and thats a fact - touches the parts that only the likes of Callas et al can

  • Meravigliosa!

  • La meilleur version. Merci

  • The original one with Bidú Sayão is the best...ever.

  • Luciane, talvez a palavra que possa melhor expressar o poder dessa música é: eternidade! Tudo se torna belo quando a ouvimos. Tudo se torna triste quando a ouvimos. Tudo se torna eterno quando a ouvimos!

  • This is definitely the recording I love the most, of this wonderful piece. Somehow I love the part with no lyrics better than the rest... What a marvellous voice VdlA had! Thank you for sharing!

Sublime talvez consiga chegar perto.

  • Oh Victoria, Victoria... you did it again, but this time, you were sublime.

  • God that was too beautiful to be tell ,, just profound and perfect .. (if that exist)

  • Simply sublime!

  • Oh my God---and i do mean Bidu--

this woman though-absolutely superb-[even though they took it a bit fast]

    - De Los Angeles is heaven- Her signature tonality, sonority-stradivarius with the crushed gems in the shellach-...I didn't know she had done the No. 5 . Thank you for posting this monumental gift.

  • @WynneAlexander it was Villalobos who was conducting ..so it was no more or less .. it was just what he meant to be ..

Baroque music never was slower than this and that s exactly what the composer was looking at when he made it .. but I don't want to sound like a heavy jerk to you .. I understand what you said two months ago about the tempo .. it does sounds faster than we are use to but still beautiful as it can be ... really beautiful .

  • Definitivamente a melhor enterpretação dessa belissima obra de Villa lobos.

  • Sublime!

  • Voz humana y divina

  • And the Sea reflects its great splendor.

Softly, the shining Moon just awakes

The cruel missing that laughs and cries.

Evening, a rosy, slow and transparent cloud

Over the space dreamy and beautiful...

  • English translation

Evening, a rosy, slow and transparent cloud

Over the space dreamy and beautiful

The Moon sweetly appears in the horizon,

Decorating the afternoon like a nice damsel

Who rushes and dreamy adorns herself

With an anxious soul to become beautiful

Shout all Nature to the Sky and to the Earth!

All birds become silent to the Moon's complains

  • Cala a passarada aos seus tristes queixumes

E reflete o mar toda a Sua riqueza...

Suave a luz da lua desperta agora

A cruel saudade que ri e chora!

Tarde uma nuvem rósea lenta e transparente

Sobre o espaço, sonhadora e bela!

  • Tarde uma nuvem rósea lenta e transparente.

Sobre o espaço, sonhadora e bela!

Surge no infinito a lua docemente,

Enfeitando a tarde, qual meiga donzela

Que se apresta e a linda sonhadoramente,

Em anseios d'alma para ficar bela

Grita ao céu e a terra toda a Natureza!

  • Such was the depth of her compassion that when she learned of the death of Callas, by phone, she burst into hysterical sobs and took quite some time to regain herself. They worshiped each other, and with good reason—two great artists cut from the same cloth.

  • Divine Victoria, one of the most beautiful souls Our Creator ever put on this blessed earth. Everything is there—passion, heart, body and soul, with a sweetness that makes the tears run easily . . . the song of a forsaken woman, brought to artistic perfection by someone, who, just like Maria Callas, had no peer. A pppp B flat that is less of a note and more of a sigh of resignation. Simply beautiful.

  • @sillyboydeux

Well stated, but please do not put Callas in this ethereal company.

  • @Operanut9 Haha. Well, why not? Victoria and Callas were very, very good friends. But, different artists with different approaches. Go listen to Callas' "Caro nome" from Mexico City, 1951, if you want ethereal. They were put here for different reasons.

  • Rich, fantastic, fabulous!

    How divine is her voice.

  • How does she get to that A during that ppp?????

    She can't be human!!! :S

  • The definitive vocal performance of this work!

  • Is this the recording with Leopold Stokowski conducting?

Could you please put more bass line in here?

Thank you for trying to post that which is so elusive and evasive and that is one of the most ethereal interpretations of this wonderful song EVER recorded!

  • I tnink it is Villa-Lobos conducting.

Stokowski have recorded this song with Licia Albanese

  • C 'est l'harmonie meme! La meilleure version! Merci infiniment. ! A V

Tan humanamente divina. Gracias a quien lo haya puesto.

  • Marvelous!!!

  • Is this the 1956 recording with the ORTF National Orchestra or is it the 1957 recording with the French National Radio Orchestra?

  • I don't have either version here with me, but if I remember correctly, this is the 1957 version.

  • This is one of the greatest versions ever. Her voice is so soft and clear

  • Grazie!

    E meravigliozo...

  • Bad portuguese pronounciation, but the voice - you'd forgive almost anything, wouldn't you?

  • Without a doubt the best version I've heard. Thank you for this astounding performance.

  • !Absolutamente fascinante!!

  • Heavenly!TY

  • No one can sing this better than Victoria de los Angeles.Perfect for her voice, and her persona.

  • I almost agree with you since I love Victoria de los Angeles' singing of everything she performs. But Bidu Sayao, for whom the piece was written, does a marvelous job and hers is my favorite performance. Also, Anna Moffo's recording is excellent.

  • Victoria de los Angeles had one of the most exquisite, hauntingly beautiful voices of all time; it's a sound that I can instantly recreate in my mind's ear. In the right repertoire, such as this marvelous piece, she was unequaled; she is still my favorite Butterfly, Massenet Manon, Suor Angelica, and exponent of French Chansons and Spanish songs. Her VIDA BREVE is spectacular too.

  • Well it´s Vitoria! Everything she care to sing came out sublime...Certainly Maestro Villa-Lobos was deeply moved for playing togheter w Vitoria (the backing cellos are beautiful here!)

  • I have a V. de. L/CD that I bought for this. Still the best--hanting; unique.

  • Very good. She sang this very difficult piece smooth and passionate.

  • So beautiful... I have no words... thanks for sharing.

  • Splendide ...
