Everyone seems to be missing the point with Hamilton. That point is that you don't have to kill the drums when you play. I hate to break it to everyone but the drums are already dead. If the drumming world just got that idea there would be a lot less obnoxious noise and maybe musicians and the people that hire musicians would want drummers again. Hamilton is the only guy playing light. Try it yourselves, it's not easy.
@jbetleydc No one wants drummers any more? I thought I could still hear them on at least 90% of the music published. As for obnoxious noise, you'd have to specify what you mean. Do you really believe that all loud drumming is in that category? Could it be that you are writing from prejudice, rather than musical understanding?
As with all instruments, it is sometimes appropriate to play drums loudly, softly and at volume levels in between. No volume is automatically easy or hard to play.
@jbetleydc Seems like you don't know many drummers, my man. Also seems like you don't know much about music. That is actually one of the dumbest things I've ever read. Obnoxious noise? There is no professional drummer that is respected by his peers that makes obnoxious noise. If you're a working drummer, it's because people like the way you play. Jeff Hamilton the only one playing light? You must have never heard of Brian Blade, Will Kennedy, Dave Weckl, John Riley, among many others.
Decent, overall. Understated/serviceable style, befitting the music: restated!
tho that extended fill isn't exactly gonna set the world on fire, (he could've just gone with brushes, and it would've made lil difference). Someone with the personal dynamism of i.e., Buddy Rich (dec'd), Max Roach (dec'd), Chico Hamilton, Ed Shawnessey, Jojo Mayer or even Steve Smith, would've torn the roof off that sucker! P.S. it's largely subjective, but that's the nature and the magic of jazzzz.
I LOVE Jeff Hamilton, but those remo drums sound like shit. I studied w/him and once I was playing Yamaha Recording Customs with pinstripes doing a big band gig. Jeff came in, sat in on a tune and joked about my setup - really dark sounding toms and super-dry cymbals (ala Gadd) - but when he played it opened up like I'd never heard it before. He's a true master, and I know he can make anything sound good, but I miss hearing his old Gretsch kit. Those Remos sound choked and totally unmusical.
Yeah... I think it's the audio, I use those Fyberskin Remo heads and sound just lovely, they can saoun as low as Art Blakey's did and as high and bright as Max Roach's heads on Drums unlimited. Jeff is such a great artist, I'd like to see him in a clinic in Mexico sometime, peace.
I find pretty much all of these modern drummer videos have the driest most dead sounding drum mixes. Which is kinda fucked seeing as it's a...you know....drum festival dvd...
Some quickie bass pedal skills. decent. Understated/serviceable style overall fits the music.
IMO that solo not exactly gonna set the world on fire, but that's ok. His loose demeanor is fine... Like Steve Gadd & Dave Weckl, he places left hand way high. In theory, he won't achieve ideal balance. In reality, personal comfort level is every professional's prerogative.
Jeff Hamilton is a beast of nature. "ideal balance" is the number 1 rule in matched grip, but in traditional every real drummer knows that the contrast in grip and movement between the 2 hands is where the excitement comes
@dizzypeanut Such a fine line - Music without technique, at best, MAY become popular, otherwise it is garbage; technique without music may be satisfying for the player himself/herself, but overall speaking it is also garbage. This solo may seem mellow to an average rock listener, but the technique is absolutely there; check out his left hand push/pull, right there it is an hour a day for 5 years ...
remo fiberskyn FD3 on all top heads, clear ambassador on bottoms except BD which is FD3 on both sides. bosphorus hammer series cymbals. remo drums too.
Musical to the nth! Every drummer should remember that the ultimate goal is to make great music with other people, and this guy shows us how it's done! Thanks, Jeff!
i love how he bends the pitch on the toms cool sound :D

Try studying music instead of technique.

I absolutely love his playing! So musical, so mature, such a great sound. I'll take him over a chops factory any day.
webstercat 4 years ago
Exactly! But who would know how to put chops to better use than a master of musicality?
Jeff is the total package, no doubt about it. I just think technique junkies tend to underestimate what guys like Jeff can really do..!
cjcdrums 4 years ago
The first melody is "Things Ain't What they Use to Be" what is the second melody in the solo? I've heard it before but can't recall the name.
webstercat 4 years ago
It's Bird's "Now's The Time".
MarkR1957 4 years ago
No, it's not . It's "Blues for Stephanie", written by John Clayton when he was in Basie's band.
