I would rank the San Diego area higher. There are natural food restaurants, great markets, farmers markets every day, beautiful beaches, hiking in San Diego and much more just outside the city. Although the powers that be tend to be conservative, there is a very high spiritual consciousness in and around the city and north county. San Diego is also a very fitness minded city, maybe # 1 in the US. Marin and Sedona are great but super expensive, especially Marin. Gracias bro.
dont know abt the restaurants part, but Eugene oregon is where a lot of the Organic food co's are at that make some of the best products that local OR, WA and CA Whole Foods carry, as well as other Whole foods and health stores throughout. (Pacific, CoconutDream, ...etc)
Yeah it's one of those cities that has a bad rep but there's a cafe gratitude there, tons of farmer's markets , whole foods, access to nature in the oakland hills and lots of community!!!
what about all those coconuts and tropical fruits in Hawaii and the nature is pure earth goddess in the volcano... the Ocean and dolphins.....Love your vids . I am in Darwin Australia.
Madison has wonderful grocery co-ops, inexpensive to moderately priced restaurants, and is one of the great college towns of all time. The people are awesome. The farmers market outside the State Capitol is always overloaded with healthy produce.
Ashland, Oregon? Ever been there? It's heaven on earth. Period. Trust me.
Asheville, North Carolina, same deal!
Mad kudos for listing Austin, Texas in the top five:^)! Wheatsville Co-op is the jam!
Aside from their great farmers market, Santa Monica is horrible! Their restaurants are borderline exclusive and overpriced. The people there are the creepiest snobs ever. For so much less, you can surround yourselves with friends and make your own vegan food at home.
Where are Madison and Ashland? True, Madison is surrounded by greasy cheese curds and butterburgers on the outskirts, but it's the oasis of Wisconsin for it being the Berkeley of the midwest.
Better than Los Angeles a few miles away, but not much better. Summer of 2001 when my room-mate and I road-tripped from North Carolina to California, we noticed the infamous LA smog hovering over the city in the form of this hulking sewer brown cloud along I-10/39 coming in from West Covina. That smog is no joke.
San Francisco! Maybe it was included along with Fairfax/Marin/etc... Either way, it's got lots of raw food options, great farmer's markets, great consciousness. Amazingly beautiful nature everywhere you turn - the Bay, the ocean, coastal ranges - and it's a big city! Hard to beat, in my humble opinion :) Come through and visit (again)!
You've inspired me to visit those places and move to one of them haha! I live in Phoenix and to me it feels like one of the more unhealthy cities. I should take more road trips up to Sedona :)
I live in Northern California, Humboldt County to be exact. It is pretty healthy up here, great COOP's, but not much of a raw food community and I hardly ever eat out so I am not sure about the restaurants.
Sedona is a nice, healthy place. But, the town closes down too early. There's nothing to do (besides stargazing) after 10pm. Not as fun as a Big City.
Hey! What happened to Asheville, NC? The Blue Ridge Mountains... The Appalachian Trail... GreenLife Grocerys... Laughing Seed Rest... art, music... the list goes on and on. A great place with great people.
Actually I´m glad it didn´t make the list... it´s gotten a little over crowded lately.
Boulderrrrrr I grew up here and I always feel so good when I come back and spend time here- definitely the place where I've felt the healthiest in my life. I feel so supported in my personal growth endeavors and health regimes. Not to mention I get to see the Flatirons every day =)
neat that austin is on the list. have ya'll traveled to georgia. its pretty like tx with lots of veggie folk but is a bit cooler..has better mtns. waves~~~
I love Ashland too! And San Francisco. And Mendocino California. I lived there for 2 years and loved it...
I have to say...in Europe...my favorite spot is Amsterdam-smoothie and juice bars everywhere, farmers markets, easy to find yummy salads at restaurants. No raw food restaurant that I know of though..
Speaking of "deserted beaches." I'm reading a book called Conservation Refugees by Mark Dowie, it's all about how our paradigm of nature needs to change from a human free place to a place that is synergistic with humans. In your criteria, you should consider industrial and nuclear waste! I know Colorado has some problems there in its past. I think we need to turn every place in this country back into a healthy community by working where we are to create community and nurture the ecosystem.
Thank you for this! We are going to take our own trip to find our perfect city to call home and your criteria is exactly like ours. We will be checking these places out.
I have never been, but feel like Ashland OR is a great fit for us too.
If you are used to living in an RV, consider buying a 32' yacht in Sausilito, Marin County. Parking can be a drag, and I hear the Golden Gate bridge toll will be going up to $7. All the more reason to ride a bike. If you can afford your own house, that would be cool too.
I lived in Santa Fe, NM for ten years, and it has everything going for it. The Winters can get rather cold, like Boulder...but something has to give.
You have got to come to the Chapel Hill/Carrboro/Raleigh area if you want health. It's crazy how much emphasis there is on health, nature, and community.
Yeah Austin!!!! Like they say, if you don't like the weather in Austin, stick around a little while and it will change, lol. We have had a ton of rain and cooler weather in the last month, everything is so very green, lovin it!
i live about 30 mins from marin and cafe graditte i love that restaurant so i guess marin. i has friends in marin too that have an organic peach farm and they make peache jam and also just sell the peaches. the farm is in a different city though i forget which one
so I am from Colorado but I have lived most of my life on Maui!!! Beautiful Maui! We have farmers markets, hiking, fishing, boating, kite boarding just about anything you can think of plus tons of people who grow their own food because the weather here is nice year round. Our winters are sometimes wet but we have a ton of health food stores and raw and vegetarian restaurants! Come on down and see for yourself!!!!!
Seattle! Number 10! I am so disappointed. Maybe you just didn't say long enough. (=
