I seem to maybe have found a hidden feature in pinguy 11.04. I did a clean install and was about to restore my bookmarks from firefox from my last distro and I noticed under restore there were a few previously backed up bookmarks. If you restore the 12/05/10 or the 01/06/10 back ups in a bookmark folder called Video there is another folder called Porn with a few porn sites already bookmarked. At least this happened on my install. Anyone confirm Pinguy 11.04 is the Linux that comes with porn lol?
@thackythac Lol! I hadn't even noticed that myself. Took a look in the VM on my machine at home, and you're absolutely correct. I pointed it out to Pinguy so he can take care of it. Lol. :P
Thanks for doing this review. It gave me something to switch over to from Ubuntu 11.04. Tried it, loved it, hope it just keeps getting better and better.
there is two news about mandriva look at its english community forum i cant give you links here because youtube refuse to submit a comment with the links any way the news there have these two titles =================== Interviews with Arnaud Laprévote and Stéphane Laurière Communication from Rosa Lab ================== as i said you can find those titles at mandriva english community in community chat forum
I'm seeing quite a few comments about how people are not liking Pinguy and i think it would be great if you could do a video on Zorin OS 4 as it is much more user friendly for both windows and mac users that are just getting into linux.. There are very few videos on Zorin on YT and none of them are done nearly as well as you could do and i think alot of people would enjoy Zorin.
@WarShipSayTen unless I missed it, isn't Zorin just Ubuntu with a different theme on it to make it look like Windows? Been a little while since I looked at it.
@thisweekinlinux In addition to that it does have a few glitches of its own as I've already tinkered around with it myself and started out in it's "sandbox" mode of what it calls it safe applications from its software center.
Actually Ubuntu 11.04 has the global menu for Desktop as well, just hover over the top menu when don't have any window in focus and you will get options like Places, File, Edit, etc. Just don't show "Desktop" in the panel.
Thank you for your video. I was actually going to try Pinguy OS this weekend, but now I won't. Through your video I know that's nothing for me openbox user...
@Gnomeye if you're an openbox user, just about anything Gnome/Unity/Gnome3 based is probably going to look like something you're not interested in. :P
@sameyieyir I mention Mandriva/Mageia every time they have an alpha/beta/rc/etc., I just haven't had the time to install and test it out yet. Once they both release, I do intend to go over them.
hi can u help me i have a problem a big one i cant install ubuntu 11.04 cuz the screen goes black totally black i cant see i thing . im using a acer laptop 5734z and u are saying that pinguy is base in ubuntu 11.04 maybe i run with the same problem again or not please can u do a video about what can we do to fix the problem or tell those guys to correct the problem
@thisweekinlinux you are way cooler, because you are the only person on youtube that isn't upset about this, but I know why he is mad, it is because you are way cooler!
@thisweekinlinux Don't feel bad...he really doesn't like anyone else who even thinks about doing Linux stuff on youtube....I eventually accepted it and stopped...but I may have to start again cause I'm getting messages asking me to lol.
@MicroHelper yea I stopped watching him once he went crazy on his gay rant. Not that I have anything against gay people but he just went crazy on it.. nobody was even caring that he was gay and he kept going on and on about it. Dude.. just do the Linux reviews, nobody cares about your personal life !
@MicroHelper Yea he is because he said it himself, but that's not the problem. The problem is that some commenters were saying stupid stuff to him and he took it to heart (which I understand, it does affect the youtuber but you have to be strong because we are on the web.. stupid people everywhere), and he went on a rampage.. I was like.. "I would rather listen to someone that can handle his personal situations then someone who is unstable".
yea this is basically ubuntu ... the linux community needs to start working together to improve maybe one or two os instead of creating hundreds of derivs
The docky thing seems like a virtual box thing, and not a punguy bug. I will try this OS out myself. Looks interesting. Something I would recommend to a windows user.
i found your channel when searching information on linux. Do you have any insight on the level of knowledge needed for someone to hack DECT using linux laptop, modified driver and modified com-on-air pcmcia card? U can friend me for msg or just send msg to me. Trying to understand if this is a complex hack or do most linux users have the ability? Please see DeDected.org for more info. Your thoughts are appreciated.
@NDSCollector a part of me wants to say gnome 2.xx, another part wants to say gnome 3/gnome shell. I'm using gnome 3/shell on all of my Linux systems right now, if that says anything.
@miggdrasil I use Arch Linux on my desktop and my laptop, and Fedora 15 on a desktop at work. I was using Ubuntu 11.04 with Gnome 3 for a little while, but I just prefer Arch (just my preference)
If you are to believe kernel developers, bugs reported to Ubuntu rarely get upstream. To me this is really a problem for me. Last year, for example, there was a bug with sshfs that instead of saving changes to file removed file contents completely. It took a looong time to get that one fixed. We'll see if DEX is just a marketing stunt or it will work. :)
@TheMeanEYE hopefully DEX does work indeed... would be very nice for the rest of the debian-based distros. Of course it would be nice if non-Debian specific patches were pushed upstream to non-Debian distros as well...
@thisweekinlinux I doubt DEX will work. To me it smells like a marketing stunt. If I remember correctly, there was already a project of that kind before and it didn't work.
ive noticed with 11.04 that some icons do not stay on the taskbar, like skype, the skype icon does not show up and neither does akregate the rss reader..so im not sure if thats just me or there is actually a bug with the taskbar
@vipor29 I think there are still some issues with the system tray in 11.04 that they're working out, but I thought I read somewhere that the newest version of Skype worked with the system tray now... are you on an old version perhaps?
the Memenu is NOT the Messaging menu , the Memnu shows your status (online, busy, offline, etc) ,The Messaging menu shows your IM, Evolution, Thunderbird, Emesene etc.
Great vid. The is THE source for Linux. I figured out what my Java problem was for my Ubuntu 10.10. I need "The Java Plugin 6" and it works just great...but this...looks so complete. Can I make it black and green? hehe
@analyzingfunny lol, in 11.04 it's on by default, it's just a bit wonky. if you run an app, it shows up when you mouse over the top panel in a certain place. that's why I'd prefer this menu, the Ubuntu one is just awkward.
Man I wish the Ubuntu 11.04 universal menu would just stay there. It's so stupid the way you can't know if it's got what you want until you go there. I wish they would just wise up and do it properly.
That was a little creepy, the wallpaper change...
Great review. This looks like not a bad alternative to Ubuntu if you don't like Unity. Still, Gnome 2 won't be developed forever, but hopefully Unity and Gnome 3 will have improved by then.
@Shockszzbyyous I haven't. it's been a long time since I've used any BSD, but I've had people ask here quite a few times. it's just not Linux, so I haven't been in a hurry to review it on a Linux channel.
@bamdadkhan I do generally avoid them, but when one is on distrowatch, and climbing the charts over there, and the developer is nice enough to stop by and ask me in person, and tell me what's different about it, etc. I'll consider it. :)
Nice looking distro, though I too am more minimalist and just stick to arch these days, but I imagine it must be popular amongst other people who like getting all the apps in the one install
Using it right now on a box. Very nice. Will keep on drive and recommend to family or friends wiling to give Ubuntu a try. Love that it has OpenShot installed.
I will never understand ubuntu derivatives. If I am versed enough in linux to be aware of an ubuntu derivative then I'm versed enough in linux to install apps in ubuntu.
@whatnameisavailablee Ubuntu is crap and getting worse, derivatives stays user friendly and usualy works better than ubuntu, ubuntu is great distribution, but because of their dependency tree and mac way i never been interested in Ubuntu at all... Also i think linux newbies chooses derivatives because of look and options, not a ubuntu which is featureless and with a total crap look.
@johonunu hahaha point well made, buuuuuut I feel Ubuntu is substantially different enough from Debian to warrant it. Correct me if I'm wrong (I might actually be wrong, I'm only a novice user) but Ubuntu differs in much more than just simply packages, but with added drivers and what not.
@whatnameisavailablee hahaha it was a joke ;) I myself use Kubuntu and Arch :D hahahaha Because I am disappointed with latest Ubuntu and their Unity interface :(
@whatnameisavailablee I'm of the impression that if someone wants to package up a bunch of stuff on top of Ubuntu, it should really be a metapackage, so you install Ubuntu normally, then run "sudo apt-get install pinguyos" or something to that effect, after adding a PPA. But that's just my opinion. There are definitely people that like the respins, otherwise they wouldn't exist.
@joguSD I can understand those points but, I still wouldn't make a derivative but instead what @thisweekinlinux suggested but creating a metapackage instead. Eg. "sudo apt-get install pinguyos"
@ipwnrubberduckiesftw well Pinguy OS comes with a lot more applications than you may need. LinuxMint comes with the standart apps - Office, movie player, music player etc...
@ipwnrubberduckiesftw if it were me, I'd be looking at Mint 11, but I prefer a more minimal install. Pinguy is extremely useful if you're unfamiliar with what apps you really want/need, or if you just want a huge smattering of apps all at once. :)
@v1y1 long days. work all day, family all evening, make videos after I get my son to bed. before shooting this one, I had to install it, test it, shoot it once, fail, reshoot. :P

imo ubuntu is the best, everything works properly and theres no name inconsistencies. mint 11 and 10 are just plain ugly now

Nice looking distro, though I too am more minimalist and just stick to arch these days, but I imagine it must be popular amongst other people who like getting all the apps in the one install
ElderSnake90 9 months ago
@ElderSnake90 it's apparently a lot more popular than I thought it was.

Using it right now on a box. Very nice. Will keep on drive and recommend to family or friends wiling to give Ubuntu a try. Love that it has OpenShot installed.

I will never understand ubuntu derivatives. If I am versed enough in linux to be aware of an ubuntu derivative then I'm versed enough in linux to install apps in ubuntu.
whatnameisavailablee 9 months ago 25
@whatnameisavailablee Ubuntu is crap and getting worse, derivatives stays user friendly and usualy works better than ubuntu, ubuntu is great distribution, but because of their dependency tree and mac way i never been interested in Ubuntu at all... Also i think linux newbies chooses derivatives because of look and options, not a ubuntu which is featureless and with a total crap look.

@whatnameisavailablee I will never understand debian derivatives :)

@johonunu commercial support is not an app :-)

@johonunu I dont understand any distribution, aside from Arch ;)
MeBeBonkers 9 months ago
@johonunu hahaha point well made, buuuuuut I feel Ubuntu is substantially different enough from Debian to warrant it. Correct me if I'm wrong (I might actually be wrong, I'm only a novice user) but Ubuntu differs in much more than just simply packages, but with added drivers and what not.
whatnameisavailablee 9 months ago
@whatnameisavailablee hahaha it was a joke ;) I myself use Kubuntu and Arch :D hahahaha Because I am disappointed with latest Ubuntu and their Unity interface :(
johonunu 9 months ago
@johonunu not to worry I took it as a joke :) And yeah... I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 Classic mode... But.. crossing my fingers for 11.10 :)
whatnameisavailablee 9 months ago
@whatnameisavailablee I'm of the impression that if someone wants to package up a bunch of stuff on top of Ubuntu, it should really be a metapackage, so you install Ubuntu normally, then run "sudo apt-get install pinguyos" or something to that effect, after adding a PPA. But that's just my opinion. There are definitely people that like the respins, otherwise they wouldn't exist.
thisweekinlinux 9 months ago
@whatnameisavailablee 1: There could be MANY applications that you have no clue exist.
2: First time linux users might want to install this or a more "complete" albeit a little bloated.
3: Themes and the overall feel of an interface can be difficult to set up WELL, if someone has set up a interface that you like why not use it.
4: What if you were going to install most of these apps anyways? Why not get them pre-installed.
joguSD 9 months ago
@joguSD I can understand those points but, I still wouldn't make a derivative but instead what @thisweekinlinux suggested but creating a metapackage instead. Eg. "sudo apt-get install pinguyos"

crissescore 9 months ago
which is better in your opinion: linux mint 11 (when it comes out) or pinguy 11.04? trying to figure out which to choose :)
ipwnrubberduckiesftw 9 months ago
@ipwnrubberduckiesftw well Pinguy OS comes with a lot more applications than you may need. LinuxMint comes with the standart apps - Office, movie player, music player etc...
v1y1 9 months ago
@v1y1 ok thanks for the input :)
ipwnrubberduckiesftw 9 months ago
@ipwnrubberduckiesftw if it were me, I'd be looking at Mint 11, but I prefer a more minimal install. Pinguy is extremely useful if you're unfamiliar with what apps you really want/need, or if you just want a huge smattering of apps all at once. :)
thisweekinlinux 9 months ago
@thisweekinlinux and thanks to you too! i think i will be betting mint 11 then.
ipwnrubberduckiesftw 9 months ago
I had the same problem with the install icon and reboot didn't help, but if you log out and back in it goes away.
dynetrax 9 months ago
Huh, looks pretty good. I think I might replace all my future Ubuntu installations with Pinguy!
