The Scopes Monkey Trial was a publicity stunt staged by the town of Dayton, Tennesse. The idea was to create a sensational trial to attract a large (paying!) crowd into to town. It worked spectacularly , and since the ACLU footed the bill, it didn't even cost the town anything. The play "Inherit the Wind," is pure baloney, and bears little resemblance to the facts. He began a slow march away from crude Marxism starting in the early 1930s, and was put on an NKVD death-list for his outspoken views against the anti-freedom nature of the Marxist parties. Went to Maine with friend who had deep interest in Dr Reich. We met his caretaker and some others there. I was not as smart as my friend so my understanding at the time was not on his level.

I read Fury On Earth some years ago, and it was one of the more disturbing books I've yet encountered.
