The biggest mistake with building a home theater is BUILDING a HOME THEATER. Setting off a room just to watch movies or television is a waste of money. That's what a living room or family room is for. Folks get this: a HDTV with Cat5 and SPDIF, a 7.1 audio system with SPDIF, a quite PC with TV tuners, Windows Media Center 7, and a learning remote to rule them all. That's it. And you don't need a dedicated room just to use it.
@Tarrdica there is no diffrence in audio or image quality of cables .. you arent gettin more because it says Gold plated Hdmi cable on the box and costs 500 bucks . trust me . but enyone can gett a cheap cable that has a lose cable or whatever . not that it doesent happen with the expensive ones .. its all made at the same place in china enyway
@Pallepop909 There's not going to be much difference in audio quality since it's used for watching movies, and movies have crap audio anyway compared to a real stereo-cd setup. All in all, cables matter is you're going to use it for stereo use.
Amazing quality and 3D depth...best deals on 3D Tv's/video projectors/ All ur Home Theater gear are at Home Theater Design & Installatiosn, Winter Garden,Fl - will BEAT any legit price!
Very nice Top 10! We review home theater systems ourselves. If your budget isn't unlimited but want a home theater system of good quality, look at our reviews..
If you're setting up your home theater on a budget, I'd recommend building your home theater one component at a time. And by component, I mean the major components. Start off with your game systems or disk player, as this isn't likely to change for a while. A speaker set and TV next, and finally a receiver.
Personally, I did mine a bit ass backwards. I had a sony bravia TV, and slowly added components to it over time.
hey guys check out my home theater video its pretty sweet and make sure you subscribe if you like it. its not done yet, there are 2 parts to the video and the second part is still be produced because the home theater is also still in production but it is almost done so plz subscribe i need some subscribers, and thanks to all who do.. if you do subscribe and leave a comment in my channel, i will make a video every 100 subscribers i get naming you guys. thanks!
ya. if there was no difference in cables then why not just use the ones in the box? or why not have your electrician use braided speaker cable to wire your power outlets in your home? you could save your money & go to disney world!
lol the hddvd blu ray war ended pretty soon after this video was posted, And there is nothing wrong with waiting for that to end, just keep in mind you might buy one or the other some day and prepare acordingly!
i just got a good 1.4 hdmi cable on ebay for 6 dollars lol. and a fiber optic sound cable for 3 dollars lol. and there is no difference. you do need a reciever to hook up your speakers though. just buy a ps3 and you got it all for movie watching media netflix and so on.
SOMEONE WHO knows what hes talking about . wow. to think i use to buy monster cable until a friend of mine made me buy monoprice cables. mono sounded way better at about a third of the prce. o well
Blu-Ray won, lol...and I bought both, but I knew Blu was going to win, and recommended it to all my family and friends based on the Movie Studio Support. Boy, are they glad they listened. I was the only one with HD-DVD, but I got a deal, thank goodness.
Oh yeah, when you buy online, they are whole sellers. It will cost more in an Audio Video showcase, but you are paying more for the overhead, the experience, so on and so forth. Just like the video said, just because the deal is cheap doesn't make it good. Just like owning a sports car; shit tires will equal shit performance. Just saying....
Cables don't make a difference? So, if you buy a Ferrari, 87 octane is cool. What if you are spending descent to top dollar for the setup? I know for a fact that the cables do make a huge difference to the performance with the equipment. Very misleading on this...
@subi5150. You bought expensive cables huh? Sorry, I bought cheaper ones and I can say that they don't make any difference whatsover compared to the best ones my brother owns! Not ONE change in audio or picture quality!
@whysohardto What do you consider to be the best in cables? Monster? You'd be wrong. What I use is Audioquest. Carbon series for HDMI audio, Chocolate series for HDMI video and Type 4 speaker cables. If you understand electronics then you know that the cables and speakers, once connected to the amp or AVR, become resistors. Better manufacturing for cables equates to better sound, the idea of less resistance in the cable.
@whysohardto It also depends on the epuipment, if you have McIntosh amps and Bowers and Wilkins speakers you would absolutely hear a difference, but if you are talking about Klipsch audio and basic Yamaha AVRs, then you wouldn't. I am a musician of 20 years and work in the industry for high end audio, so I have ears trained to hear things a little differently. I have had the chance to test bargin cables to ultra high end cables and have seen and heard differences.
@subi5150. Yes, I appreciate what you are saying, although I don't have 'trained ears' as you say, which is a bit of wank really!, I do actually have eyes, and actually so does my brother (2 of them) and the difference was nothing! Sorry mate, you will never convince me to buy $699 cables for a home projector. I know you are saying that your a musician, but I am a home-sound/audio tech, and still can't see the vlaue in $699 cables. Just different opinions though
@whysohardto "A bit of wank". Well spoken. I am not going to argue semantics with someone half way around the world. As far as the value on the cables, I am saying that it all depends on the equipment. If you have a Ferrari, you put ZR rated tires (tyres?) on it, if it's a Honda, HR rated. What you feel is yours and yours alone, some people feel that they hear and see a difference, some are more cynical to the idea. That's the beauty of being a human: the ability to reason.
@whysohardto If you don't have the ears that may be the problem. You should look into the manufacturing process for cables, there manys ways that they are put together. There are also different metals that have different conductive values, which equates to different sounds. It all depends on how serious you take you audio. This video has good ideas, but aren't all absolute.
@subi5150. You bought $699 cables too huh? Sorry man! You are right what you say, videos have good ideas, but aren't all absolute. You should have got better advice before the big spend up on over priced chinese cables. Copper feed is copper feed my friend. Coax is just coax too by the way
@whysohardto Well, I am not stupid, so no, I didn't pay full price. Like I said, I work in the industry. And copper is not copper. Cables are not all made out of just copper. If you are in fact a tech, which everyone claims to be on these sites, then you should have been a part of some sort of training and/or vendor testing with products. There is something to be said when high end audio companies utilize high quality cables. But what do they now, they're just audio engineers...
@whysohardto. The thing about Home Theater is that it is a very personal thing, just like cars. Some like muscle cars, some like exotics and some have a car to just get the job done.
@subi5150. True, but would you pay $59,990 for a Huyndai because the salesman told you that is what they re worth?? ? Or just $8,000, what it is actually really worth?
@whysohardto I don't buy sight unseen, I do the research and play with ideas. I do think the process through and find the worth or value in something. I am sure there is something that you are passionate about that you spend your hard earned money on that comes at some cost to you. Golf? Cars? Hometheater? Pick your poison. But, like I say, it's ultimately what each individual finds on their own that leads to what they own...
@subi5150 Very, very well put. I actually like your view on things when you say 'pick your poison'. It's true, I do agree. You too obviouslly share the passion of home cinema. It's cool huh? What the hel have I been missing out on for all these years! Stay well.
@whysohardto I absolutely love home theater. If I am not golfing or playing music, I am enjoying a good movie or listening to a favorite album of mine. I can't imagine my life without good home audio. Give me a good movie, good friends and family, and a good beer to enjoy all together and life is good.
@darockk Premium petrol as in 91 octane is not 10 times, premium petrol as in racing fuel can cost up to 10 times as much. Honda = 87 octane. Ferrari = 91 octane, if you are cheap. Racing fuel is for purists. Is this better as far analogies go? I figured people would get the car analogy, guess you have to know cars too...
shopping by price vs what you want is tricky since not everyone can afford what they want and thus need to shop by price since not everyone is made of money and can afford $20,000 for a home theater, as not everyone is going for the dedicated room for one, rather they want a decent setup for their living room for day to day usability as far as cables go, people do get fleeced based on the "if it's more expensive, it is better" cliche.
Someone gave me a HD-DVD she bought by error...I doubt I'll ever be able to sell it on ebay...
And I bought 2 HDMI cables at BB, one at 25$ and one at 70$ and the cheap one was not as good but then I ordered a 20$ one online and it was much better than the 2 others, but I would never pay 100$ for a cable no...
Building a house & having a media room put in. Seems so overwhelming. I have no idea. Been looking at Bose, any ideas from anyone on what's a decent unit for a 7.1 surround sound?
Don't go for Bose They sound really good but they will loose that special touch after a while
For 7.1
Get a Yamaha reciever They have a variety of 7.1 receivers for each customers. Read all the features and such I didn't need XM-HD radio or SIRIUS so i chose the one with all the current technology without all that
Speakers
Make sure you get speakers that match the audio output power of the RECEIVER Otherwise, damage will happen to the speakers
@TexasNova Oh and remember, like he said in the video, make sure your audio and video technology is proportional. Don't get an awesome speakers, and receiver while having a piece of junk projector/tv.
Get the best for yourself and look for a bargain.
Also, with reason #3, I disagree with "vise-versa". A 42" TV is fine, but I need my 4 18" subwoofers and three speakers for each channel!
Also, reason #1 counter-agrees with reason #2 a little bit.
And with reason #9, "The rear speakers are often too loud..." From my personal opinion, movies don't put enough into the rear. My science teacher had his front and rear speakers reversed, so the science videos had the dialog coming from the back of the class. It sounded great!
also a big mistake peoples make is once they see a new hdtv with a claim of improving your tv signals and 1080p resolution capable,100hz etc,,,
peoples do believe that their video,s tv channels really look better, but qhat tv manufactors don,t tell you is that you need a 5 times sharper signal!!!!!!!!
Sure cables make a difference, but they are an item with fast diminishing returns for the money and you reach that point of diminishing returns quite low in the price scale.
$30 might be under doing it for say a HDMI run to a projector where any length over 6 meters can start to get problematic but on the whole he is right about most of the cables.
Point is if you have infinite funds then spend up big on cables if it makes you feel good about having done it but don't expect a big improvement.
all true, BUT, the cables, ok, for a home theather a standard cable is OK, but this doesn't expand for High End Audio, and, ultimately, High End Home Theathers. Dont compare a simple oxigen-free 2 conductor copper cable, with a , for example, a 5 conductor gold-silver conductor cable. It's OTHER WORLD when the source is on it's level.
Cable makers rely on rich, gullible, uninformed customers to stay in business.
Just use the thickest no-name copper cable you can get away with, keep the connectors tight and clean, keep the cable runs as short as possible, and you won't have a thing to worry about.
Blow your dough on things that really do make a difference, like good quality speakers.
So technically the $2 digital optical audio cable which I bought on eBay from China is not really going to be any worse than the 20$ Bandridge one I would have bought at a local store, right?
I was reading a Hi-Fi audio review article and the author brought some of his friends over and played music using expensive cables vs coat hangers used as cables. Many couldn't tell the difference. Yes cables make a difference but they aren't nearly as important as the equipment running them.
,,,It's hard to be positive when" you" go around saying thing's that someone tells you. why buy nice interconnects, speaker wire or power cables when you have home theater. Who cares what a F16 sounds like its kind of close to the sound of the jet anyway. You don't have to be right on your top 10 is BS look where line conditioners are on your list mg
@twochaudio WTF are you on about? The first thing to do is gain command of a keyboard. Understand English and pertray in a mature and positive manner. Not throw a load of symbols together hoping that some tool will vote you up.. This cunt is oblivious... twochaudio, go to school..Idiot..
this guy is right but free is good too rember to resyle my system is all rescyled and it sounds geat i have xbox tv and pc all in the same sound sysetm
They did not mention it, but it can probably be inserted in a catch all category Plan the Room.
I am talking about the numerous Ads that show the TV screen mounted way up over your sitting head. Especially above a fireplace. In my house that would place it 5 feet to 9 feet above the floor.
This is wrong for many reasons. The most important is the pain it causes from looking at that unnatural angle for hours on end. Ergonomics teaches is that we should look slightly ahead to 15 degrees down.
Notice you don't ever look up when in a new stadium seating megaplex.
Finally, choose surrounds and experiment on placement with a qualified disk as stated here. Not al surround loudspeakers are forgiving. New movie soundtrack contain much more information for surround than say Star Wars era films. When Avatar reaches the home, everyone will be wondering why it does not sound as good as it did at the I-Max.
They make some good points in this video, but they fail to make the distinction between sound insulation and acoustic control. They're both very necessary for any good listening environment, but sound proofing alone does not give you a "dead room". A room could be completely soundproof and have reflections like crazy. For that you need absorption (mostly). If they got into all the details I know that would be a whole other video, but it's definitely a common mistake to not separate the two.
Actually Monster cables are super regarding picture quality they are very very good and not super expensive either.
regarding speaker cables Linn have the best i have listened to a lot of cables and i think for the price the linn K series are the best. the linn K20/400/600 have been around for atlest 25 years and they havent changed them and they are avaliable on the second hand market...
actully it dosent mater what cables the difrence is so small you will never notice the difrence dont be a idiot and spend mor on the cables than on evry thing else
For all cables lovers : cables are just meant to transport electrical signals. Can you really tell the difference between a 300$ Monster Cable speaker wire and a simple lamp cord, given that both are the same gauge and lenght? Honestly, make the test with some friends, you will hear no differences at all.
For Video calibration use ISF its so much better then Avia and DVE put together, thoughs discs are cheap and you will get a cheap looking picture because of it
I have a pretty good TV and cable box.... a sony TV and a motorola cable box, got HDTV and time warner cable. Got a PS3 and Wii, and i have a collection of DVD's..... Pretty good, right? Not too much not too little
you people are idiots.. this would be common knowledge to the average half intelligent person.. and at 2:17 "fake moon landing"? you incompetent fools
I don't agree with rule #1, better cables don't make a difference. I had a set of $80 rca's hooked up to my cd player, which were just replaced with my new audiouest king cobras. there is a big difference.
i think he is more referring to Monster HDMI cables being exactly the same as the no name 30$ cable when it comes to transmitting digital information.
lloooool stfu rybo collier , dont treat life like a house of cards , just because you pull one does not make the rest fall, so pick up your man hood and holla back
Regarding cables: sometimes you do benefit from more expensive cables. My TV used to have loads of problems recognizing the signal from my receiver 5m away over HDMI. The TV wouldn't always automaticaly change to the correct input (although the actual signal did come trough). Replacing it with a (imo way to expensive) 70 euro HDMI cable did fix the problem.
this video is shocking , IMO size > resolution , and how can u have a screen too big for a room ? THE WHOLE FUN IN HOME CINEMA IS TO HAVE A MASSIVE SCREEN U NUMPTY !!! I use a svga projector and movies still look absolutly awesome on it

Good video even if it's old...

Building a house & having a media room put in. Seems so overwhelming. I have no idea. Been looking at Bose, any ideas from anyone on what's a decent unit for a 7.1 surround sound?
TexasNova 1 year ago
Don't go for Bose They sound really good but they will loose that special touch after a while
For 7.1
Get a Yamaha reciever They have a variety of 7.1 receivers for each customers. Read all the features and such I didn't need XM-HD radio or SIRIUS so i chose the one with all the current technology without all that
Speakers
Make sure you get speakers that match the audio output power of the RECEIVER Otherwise, damage will happen to the speakers
HAVE FUN GETTING YOUR EARS BLASTED :)
raghavaj 1 year ago
@TexasNova Oh and remember, like he said in the video, make sure your audio and video technology is proportional. Don't get an awesome speakers, and receiver while having a piece of junk projector/tv.
Get the best for yourself and look for a bargain.
Buy online. Stores will be overpriced.

But blu-ray did win rather quickly! Not that I care!

There's no such thing as a too big screen. I have a 120in. And the front row is 9 feet away and it's fine .

I love "too big" screens. I love swinging my head around. I have never moved further away from a massive TV screen.
MagnusRulerHardt 1 year ago

ComandanteJ 1 year ago
Cable makers rely on rich, gullible, uninformed customers to stay in business.
Just use the thickest no-name copper cable you can get away with, keep the connectors tight and clean, keep the cable runs as short as possible, and you won't have a thing to worry about.
Blow your dough on things that really do make a difference, like good quality speakers.

So technically the $2 digital optical audio cable which I bought on eBay from China is not really going to be any worse than the 20$ Bandridge one I would have bought at a local store, right?
quantum112 1 year ago
@quantum112

GPTDental 2 years ago

Actually Monster cables are super regarding picture quality they are very very good and not super expensive either.
regarding speaker cables Linn have the best i have listened to a lot of cables and i think for the price the linn K series are the best. the linn K20/400/600 have been around for atlest 25 years and they havent changed them and they are avaliable on the second hand market...

actully it dosent mater what cables the difrence is so small you will never notice the difrence dont be a idiot and spend mor on the cables than on evry thing else
locant23 2 years ago
For all cables lovers : cables are just meant to transport electrical signals. Can you really tell the difference between a 300$ Monster Cable speaker wire and a simple lamp cord, given that both are the same gauge and lenght? Honestly, make the test with some friends, you will hear no differences at all.
