i think its amazing to see kids that have never played hockey, talk like they know something. Dear morons, staal is lined up on the far boards like that for on reason, so he doesnt get caught in traffic. Way over there, whos gonna go out of there way to defend someone on the boards? noone. He's got a clear lane to the net there, malkins shot goes to the net, and it works. stop bashing the play, it was a set play, it doesn't happen all the time, so shut it
@jimmydunphy1 Haha I could show you thousands of games with this same play. It's an everyday play. He's over there so he can get back to the bench or guard the net if the draw is lost.
LOL these announcers are true idiots. They pointed at staal to make the team aware he was there. He was only there in case the hawks won the face off he could jump back over the wall and the goalie get back into goal. This isn't a trick play teams do it all the time when they are down a goal (sometimes 2) you seriously have to be stupid to think this is a trick play when it happens in about 80 percent of games. Announcers seem to know nothing of hockey
@blindspy not really....I mean I think the Chicago vs Nashville game 5 goal was better play with plays like this. It's not a trick play you see it all the time that's why I'm so confused at why they call it a trick play.
Trick play??? He just put in a rebound. Thats what happens when you get an extra man. Someones always going to be open. Good play, but I'm not really sure how its a trick play.
He waited by the bench so Niemi had no idea of where he was, once the play went to the right of the ice he snuck down by everyone and surprised niemi.
??? Niemi knew exactly where he was, the entire team did. He didn't sneak behind anybody, he was just an extra man. Its hard to guard 6 men with 5 players. Its as simple as that. No trick play involved, just a strategy that has been around for years. He sat next to the benches so that if the hawks won the face off the goalie could run back in. Another strategy thats been around for years. Not at all a trick play.
Wtf are you saying you really think they would risk that? Thats the dumbest play ive ever heard. Regardless of the amount of people on the ice the goaltender gets an idea of where everyone is, he had no idea about staal and they put him up there to confuse everyone.
Risk that??? they do it all the time. He is standing right in front of the goalie, he can see all six of the pens players right in front of him, everyone in the stadium saw him. If he is standing in an unusal place he would be more noticed. If you want to think its a trick play then go ahead, but its been done many many times before.
@brutallyunbiased....you look like every other coach who has pulled a goalie to try and score?? Seriously pens fans really get worked up around the littlest plays.
@brutallyunbiased ok we will work thru this slowly. You commented that when a coach makes a play like this he looks like a genius and if it doesn't work he looks like... and I was answering the end of the statement. He looks like every other coach. The announcers are the pens fans I'm talking about getting worked up over a typical "pull the goalie" play. LOL they get so excited over the littlest things
@brutallyunbiased just saw your comment and thought I'd post on it. I'll ask what your input is on this play but I honestly don't understand why Pittsburgh fans think it's a trick play.
@Kartracer6 It was just a simple rebound...nothing to get worked up about...just because Staal lined up on the far wall, means nothing....unless the draw goes to the right-winger and he fires it hard around the boards to Staal, then it is a set-play.
@brutallyunbiased I just got a kick out of how worked up these fans got over this play. Your comment confused me because you wrote that a play like this a coach either looks like a hero or a fool and it confused me.
@Kartracer6 Yeah, well where were all of these "fans" when their team sucked balls...they are all fairweather fans, cheering on the latest success story in hockey...and as much as I like the Hawks, their fans are no different, they were non-existent when the team was in last.....which is how they got Kane and Toews...same goes for Crosby and Malkin.
ha, I remember this play. How did they not defend him?

@Kartracer6 I don't understand your comment....you have question marks, but no question...and I am not a pens fan.
Now go learn how to properly write a coherent response, and I'll get back to you.

@Kartracer6 They get "worked up" because they are naive homer-fags, who haven't the slightest idea about hockey....just like most announcers.
