The US abolished slavery quite late in comparison to the other slave-powered states. When the first and only successful slave revolt ended in an independent black state in 1804, the US did all it could for the next 3/4 of century to fuck the latter up. Kind of like the Cuban embargo, but for nearly 100 years...
