Its most likely a more even gear ratio for this transmission. You want a 1:1 or as close as possible for accurate readings.

that wasn't 2nd gear, they started out in 1st then shifted right to 4th gear most likely.. you can tell by how it bogs, and also because it was such a long gear. if it was 2nd it would have wound right up quick
