No, faster does not always mean better, but playing within an even remote range of the composer's intended tempo does. It was written as presto, not allegro ...
Beyond that, it's simply a mess, even at this practice tempo. For starters, the violinist's bow is EVERYWHERE, and it's never flat - not even in the heaviest, most forte sections. Dynamics, feeling, and general musicianship are inconsequential when even basic technique is nonexistent.
@washingtonmusicaviva we know dat but the players here r rather nt playing wat smetana wanted. there is nt enough feeling, nor the dynamics r all portrayed correctly.....the piano melody is not suppose to be all slurred but a rather exciting mood hence more dettaching of notes is needed. (the violinist rly rly suks no offense) also at the apreggios of the piano, pedal makes it rly messy (not good). I would say this piece needs much more improvement, i give it 61/100 =(
Hear 3 17-year olds perform this (faster) on "From the top" on National Public Radio on May 4. I saw them record it - amazing. It is a GREATpiece of music.
The music was very nice,, but Mr Banner, what's with the getting up when you hit those subito forte sections? I'm all for expression and getting into the music, but those things often distract the audience. But like i said, the music was lovely. Four stars,
