Band line up is as follows: Deniece Williams, Shirley Brewer, Lani Groves (background vox); Reggie McBride (bass); Marlo Henderson, Michael Sembello (guitars); Ollie E. Brown (drums); and Stevie Wonder.
I lust for the sound of an Orange amplifier of that era. It seems that music equipment was just so sweet and well made at that time... Musicians, you know what I'm talking about? I would only agree that microphone and recording with digital technology has gotten better at clarity, but my opinion stands.
It took guts to be a member of Wonderland. Stevie never gave them a standard setlist. He would just call out whatever he wanted to played at the moment. Watch how the guitarist is lost at the beginning of "Contusion".
For all who asked, if I remember reading correctly, Songs in the Key of Life took about two years to make, and "Contusion" was inspired by the auto accident that nearly killed him, which is why, in the beginning of this performance, he sings "I'm so glad to be alive."
And to the poster of this video, I soooooo wish I could hump your leg right now for gracing YouTube with this brilliance!! I always saw this in pieces; never all at once. Thank you, thank you, thank you...You're far too kind!
if there are still some names missing i`d like to help,.... i think i recognized claire huxtable from the cosby show as one of the backround singers and famous german football player günther netzer on the guitar
German audience in the 70s had no sense of appreciation to music. Here we are, Stevie at his best in an outstanding performance and what does the audience do? Almost no one moves, some people talk to each other while he sings (07:14), and the others act as if they are paralyzed in some German disease of lack of rhythm.
@funkyflyy2 - *THANK YOU* for sharing with us this amazing performance.
@neoautism That what a sign of respect for German audiences back then. You didn't interrupt an artist's performance or draw attention to yourself an away from the artist.
I thought the same thing. But then I remembered that Stevie and Mike Sembello jammed a a lot. I don't know if you're a musician or not, but that tune is the epitome of something that comes out of a jam session. Back in that day when fusion was king with all of the "runs" (Chick, Mahavishnu, etc) it's possible that they collaborated on this. "Hey man remember that tune we used to play.. I want to put it on "Songs.."
It's really rare to see such an extremely high musical force in one room today. You certainly won't see this on MTV or what they call 'popular' music today. Everything has to be fireworks and half naked dancers. Where is the pureness today? This is where it's at, and people should take notice of how it was done back in the days. Less is more.
This is musical perfection in every way. It literally brings tears of joy to my eyes. What's wrong with those dipshits sitting down? Why aren't they dancing? Don't they know they are witnessing musical history in the making?
THE ONE and ONLY !!! THE LEGENDARY STEVIE WONDER . LOVE TO YOU STEVE !!!

Docmananoff 1 month ago
@Docmananoff That singer in the middle is Lani Groves. So I guess that leaves Shirley Brewer on the right.

@hankaaron1961 Thanks! It seems that she only has 1 other video/song on here. That sucks.

How could this had been filmed in 1974, I thought contusion was from his 'songs in the key of life' album of 1976.
