Your kidding right? A mostly racist industry? The film industry gave Hattie McDaniel an Oscar in 1939. If anything the film industry has set the bar higher for other industries to follow!
there were official laws in place to prevent actors of color from taking Lead roles in film. Hattie was given a statue for playing a Mammy slave. Black women aren't seen as beautiful leading ladies. Hollywood may lead towards the better but also reflects the worse of representations of society.
@JoshFi ....Yes, they gave her an Oscar, but she couldn't attend the ceremony because sahe was a black women and the ceremony was for whites only. She was a nominee but couldn't even attend the ceremony. So even bringing that up is a very bad example.
What people don't realize, is that it's not like the Oscar's. The SAG's are when your peers vote for you. So to all the people saying that they think someone else should have won, need to realize that it's all the people in the room who voted for her. It's strictly actors and actresses voting for their peers.

i think she shouldve won for like...not even cameo...supporting cameo maybe? all she had was that one scene that lasted like two minutes, not even what dame judi dench had onscreen in shakespeare in love. i mean yeah i understand the whole lifetime of work and what not, but i mean come on, some of these other roles had these actors really imerse themselves into alot of hard work, give them the credit that they deserve NOW
I seriously think she will win the oscar and it will be a win for a lifetime of work. They do that every once and awhile. Take Shakespeare in Love. Judi Dench was in the movie for 8 minutes and she was funny but not better Lynne Redgrave and DEFINATELY better than Kathy Bates. It was because she was in Mrs. Brown the year before and lost to HELEN HUNT. Its sad but the Oscars are not always about who was best that year.
Yes her role in the picture was small but VERY MOVING. If she wins it will be for her LIFETIME of roles she has protrayed. This woman's first movie was in 1939! GOOD LORD!!!
i love ruby dee! and i miss her husband ossie davis he was a great actor! i love them in do the right thing and jungle fever! they always worked together! i hope she wins her oscar..she deserves it!

@MissZ87: Hattie did attend the ceremony. She wasn't allowed to attend the premier of Gone with the Wind in Atlanta.

I like the look Viggo Mortensen gives when he opens the envelope. I have to say, I was pulling for Cate Blanchett, but this is okay.
