I really wish. I REALLY wish. That Nintendo or whoever this f*ck is responsible for the anime was not, for some unknown and unjustified reason, obligated to make Ash the main character CONTINUOUSLY! He was fine as a Red parallel in the first series. He should've stayed that way, because he THOROUGHLY sucks now. The plot for the anime should, in my opinion, be a translation of the game. We start out each season with a new main character that progressively gets better until the new gen starts.

Its just that when he enters a new region he tends to think that it would be easier to catch pokemon without battling or maybe thinks he needs to think differently in battles in a new region. his pikachu probably loses a lot of battles because defense wise it weak and when is vulnerable its easily defeated. Dragging it ut as long as they can.One of the major problems is there is no real progression in strength,PIkachu should be a beast of a pokemon but still is easly overpowered. Iris's Kibago reminds me of Ash's Gible. Gible couldn't do Dragon Pulse right it always fucked up and Doryuzu is like Ash's Charizard so Ash might show/teach Iris how to control them and not just have a flashback of Charizard like you said but Gible as well.
