John Myung (Dream Theater) uses a 6 string. In this song he uses both. For the one climbing progression he uses the high C and he uses the low B on occasion for octaves, but neither are really necessary, you can translate. Decent playing, shitty quality, and you shouldn't have played along to the guitar pro track.

Why do you even play a 5 string? you don't even utilize the B string when needed. You know on the second riff? you end on an F, but you play the F on the E string and that is just a pain to reach on this particular song..it just makes you sound sloppy...End on an F on the B string....or just get a four string..

you are probabily not lefty. a right handed musician has the chance of choosing any guitar as he wishes. perhaps its colour, fret markers etc may be important to choose a guitar too. but if you were a lefty -in my country- you'd understand y i choose a 5 str. finding left handed guitars is not easy in any part of the world.

Actually, no. But I'm slowly learning it by ear. I've had some difficulty transcribing it, but I won't sacrifice what I can learn from that wonderful song by using tabs. Using tabs during the first stages of learning can help a lot with technique, ego, and motivation, but there's a point where using tabs to learn a song defeats the purpose of LEARNING the song. To me, tabs are like playing guitar hero, mindlessly pushing buttons. Fucken absurd.

Yes, they do offer some "precise" technique (as long as the tabs are precise, which is rare.) But if you're learning Portrait of Tracy, you should be beyond tabs, and mature enough to understand that it's not the physical/visual aspect of playing any song, but the aural aspect of it. I agree, tabs are useful when you're a beginner, but one has to move on (depending on personal goals of course. If you want to be mediocre, there you go, use tabs.)

Also, it could be argued that because all of the strings on the guitar have a slightly different timbre, tablature is a better tool for expressing exactly how something should sound.

Yes, that's what I think. Tablature addresses fingering technique perfectly, which is very useful in the early stages of learning an instrument. It's good to inculcate some technique in the student. Though a good musician can write and read exactly what he means using the right tools and resources, no need to limit the music to a button-pressing, level-based, guitar hero shit.

That is really a narrow opinion. You can spend three lifetimes playing a guitar, or bass and never master it. Some people are "technique" people. I would think that it would be downright inconvenient to put Portrait of Tracy onto sheet music because bass guitar harmonics (namely those ones) are nearly impossible to read (and inconvenient to write) in such a manner, not to mention that the same harmonic note can be played multiple ways.
