OMG i found out! he did a switching with another guy jus before the 'double' brought the easel over to the other side! the attention is focused on the easel, alloweing derren to swoop into the backstage and wear the monkey suit!
The box is a trick box which can show either 500 or 5000 pounds. Just before he took off the cover his hand linger on the top of the box and looked like it was pressing a button. This makes any necessary switch
@TheUsedMagician ha... so you think he actually did all thoughs trick using 'hypnosis and mind control?' I admit Derren Brown do use persuasion techniques and hypnosis on his TV show, but everything in the 'Evening of Wonders' are magic tricks mixed with basic psychology. I do reaIize that my theory is stupid. But it was a sleight of hand. He somehow switched it in the last minute.
@MeltedFilms I'm assuming that you spent your time in school watching magic tricks and wrongly coming up with the solution to basic tricks; when you really should have been in your English lessons.
No, it's true. Women look @ body language and voice intonation more. A woman would more likely change her mind based on what Derren was saying and not what he was showing her. Derren was blatantly trying to get the guy to change his mind. A stereotypical male thinks "I'm going to stick with 5000" A stereotypical female thinks "maybe he's trying to tell me something" and she would change to 500. Stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason.
I want to know about Derren's 3 questions, though.
lol i don't know if it's "true". people think in individual ways. i have a girlfriend who's oblivious to social cues, tone, and esp. body language, and a few guy friends who are just the opposite.
but anyway, i see your point, especially since you're not just generalizing for the sake of generalizing, but pointing out a possible reason for Derren's choices.
Their eyes weren't closed, if that's what you mean. They were looking at the weights, but their eyes were open & could still see Derren.... If that's what you were talking about.
haha the stuff swing because the person has their eyes closed. they are easily directed to swing the chains. SURELY out of 10 people, at least half will not be able to keep it still.
And this is partially one reason why magicians tend to never do the same trick twice. Many tricks are astoundingly simple and quite disappointing when you know how to do them.
However, if you take it a step further and continually examine things and learn how to do it yourself, then it's not disappointing at all. Then you can use these skills on other people to amaze them as Derren did with you the first time you saw the show.
I myself was shocked the first time but understood the trick later.
It's not as simple as it seems. If you think about it, he has to act as himself with his voice and as the gorilla with his body: not easy to do or prepare!

Anyone else notice the pictures of the money boxes had colors corresponding to them? The 500 had a green tint to it and the 5k was red.

I like comments that try to disprove him due to trickery.
He admits himself that everything he does is trickery and misdirection.

I'm a girl and I would have switched by the end. For no other reason than the fact that no one gives away 5000 pounds that easily.
RosieGrl26 2 years ago
If a woman were the one to be guessing for the money, she would have gone with 500 pounds. That's why Derren wanted a man.
marasellegarde 2 years ago
why do u say that?
because men are overly confident?
because women expect less?
that was a strange statement....

Excellent 'person swap'. I love the misdirection of attention by the easel and the context set before with the gorilla. Derren is sheer class.

It's an old school kids game where if your friend "falls for it" and you catch him, you get to punch him in the shoulder.
jefftravilla 2 years ago 2
falls for what?
kutieboo 2 years ago
The object is for your friend to resist looking at it when you make the OK sign/symbol. If you catch them looking at it, you clobber them.
