In my Trip to Costa rica i've noticed that in san jose most taxi drivers are columbian or of some other country but in the smaller towns the local pirates give us a better rate and usally upfront with the price
I have a really quick story to tell you that happened to my fiance and I one day at the mall in Liberia. My fiance who is from Liberia called a taxi to come get us, when it arrived my 6 yr old said something to me as got in. The guy said to my fiance, "Oh, Americans?" My fiance asked the driver to turn on the meter. He did but it must have been rigged because it charged us before we even left the mall parking lot ! And plus the guy was a douche, he was driving slower than a snail.
Even if the Maria works, it may be rigged. I was staying at Colours Resort in Pavas and taking a taxi every day back and forth to Barrio Amon or Barrio Mexico and the price was consistenly between 6-10 dollars. Except with this one taxi driver who who's Maria showed the same trip to be 16 dollars and the Maria was going up up up crazy fast. Also ask if the seatbelts in the back seat are working. I was in an accident in a taxi last year and was hurt because the seatbelt wouldn't buckle.

I'm half American and half Costarican and I've lived here in Costa Rica most of my life and even though my Spanish is good I still get taxis that try to rip people off.
These guys are 100% accurate on what they are saying.
Taxi drivers hear a foreign accent and that's it, they will try to rip you off, period.
Some advice: is to print a map out from Google maps and make sure the taxi driver is going that route, because he might take a detour with out letting you know and charge you a lot more!
also make sure you get in a taxi that is officially marked. at the airport their taxis are orange for one. and there should be a triangular label on the side.
also, be smart...look inside to see if stuff is working. dont put your bags in the back until you are sure. so keep the doors open and have one person sit and talk, or just do it through the window.
First trip I made the mistake of grabbing a pirate taxi from the airport. Once in the taxi he wanted my name & passport number for his "records." I told him to ____off.
Also, one taxi guy told me that in "taxi school" they teach them to up charge people going to or from hotels as they are tourists.

No, it doesn't. Not specifically,,,always partying going on at the bars in San jose like La Avispa, Bochinches',,,Club oh etc. But it's been my experience, anytime there is a group of 'cute friend'....that IS a party.
but I think I want to leave California and experience the culture. I just don't want to have to throw toilet paper in the trash instead of the toilet. I really liked the Gaia video you guys did and I would love to stay there, but again I want culture. What do I do? :(
Well, it's not hard to find culture in Costa Rica. You can immerse yourself as much as you want. You could live places here where there's very few gringo's OR where there's many of them. Just depends on what you're looking for. You could do volunteer work, live with a Tico family....really, the options are MANY. good luck
hey guys my boyfriend and I will be coming to San Jose, Costa Rica march 11th thru march 18th. Since that is spring break do you think it will be packed over there? I hope so. I just discovered your videos today and can't stop watching them. Everything you guys report is so very helpful from wearing condoms because prostitution is legal to make sure the taxi meters are on. I'm having a very hard time making up my mind as to where I wanna stay. I normally like 4 or 5 star hotels,
